Different plant species were grouped into ‘species groups’ for which one ortholog was selected and added to the orthogroup, in order to keep the orthogroup topology fixed and to facilitate automation on the one hand, but also to allow enough orthogroups to be constructed on the other hand (see Material and methods). -

Nomenclature of the Main Subdivisions of Phlox (Polemoniaceae)
NUMBER 4 GRANT: PHLOX NOMENCLATURE 25 NOMENCLATURE OF THE MAIN SUBDIVISIONS OF PHLOX (POLEMONIACEAE) Verne Grant Section of Integrative Biology and Plant Resources Center, The University of Texas, Austin, Texas 78712 Abstract: The task of finding the correct names for the main subdivisions of Phlox has been beset with difficulties in interpreting the intent of older authors, particularly Asa Gray. Gray divided Phlox into four main subgroups, some of which have been considered sections, but these are now seen to be only informal groups. Currently Phlox is subdivided into three sections: Phlox, Divaricatae Peter, and Occidentales A. Gray. The name Occidentales A. Gray was not validly published as a section; Gray used it only as part of a heading. The oldest valid name for what has been called sect. Occidentales is sect. Pulvinatae Peter. Recent papers have used the name sect. Annuae A. Gray in place of sect. Divaricatae, on grounds of priority. However, the name that Gray actually used was Annuae, Texenses, and it, like Occidentales, was not validly published. The sections of Phlox are being reconsidered at present in the light of new molecular evidence. Some changes will be needed, but old valid infra generic names will still have a role to play in new infrageneric classifications. Keywords: Phlox, nomenclature, Asa Gray. The genus Phlox has had a history of terms subgenus and section in the nine problems with the nomenclature of the teenth century. Some authors used the cat main infrageneric subgroups. Gray (1870, egory subgenus, others the category section, 1878, 1886) did not make it clear in his still others used both, or neither. -

Cerny Ornamental Horticulture Specialist Debbie Amundsen Davis County Horticulture Extension Agent Loralie Cox Cache County Horticulture Extension Agent September 2003 HG-2003/05 Annuals are plants that come up in the spring, reach maturity, flower, set seeds, then die all in one season. They provide eye-catching color to any flower bed and can be used as borders, fillers, or background plantings. There are several ways to find annual species that fit your landscape needs; referring to the All-American Selection program evaluations (http://www.all-americaselections.org), visiting botanical gardens to observe examples of annuals in the landscape, and looking through commercial seed catalogs are excellent places to find ideas. Most annuals are available in cell packs, flats, or individual pots. When buying plants, choose those that are well established but not pot bound. Tall spindly plants lack vigor and should be avoided. Instead look for plants with dark green foliage that are compact and free of insect and disease problems. These criteria are much more important than the flower number when choosing a plant. An abundance of foliage with few, if any flowers, is desirable. BED PREPARATION Avoid cultivating soil too early in the spring and during conditions that are too wet. Soil conditions can be determined by feeling the soil. If the soil forms a ball in your hand but crumbles easily, it is ideal. Cultivate the flower bed to a depth of 6-10 inches by turning the soil with a spade. Utah soils can always use extra organic matter such as grass clippings, leaves, compost, manure, peat, etc. -

Many of these plants are available at the Garden’s plant sales. Acer macrophyllum—big-leaf maple Seeds and flowers eaten by Evening Grosbeak, Black-headed Grosbeak, goldfinches, and Pine Siskin; Deciduous foliage provides good insect foraging for warblers, vireos, bushtits, and kinglets; Good for shelter and nesting.
