This study explores in greater depth the political and ceremonial relations that existed between the ceremonial district of Xatsitsarie and San Andrés Cohamiata , one of three Wixaritari (Huichol) communities in the area of the Chapalagana River, in the northern area of the state of Jalisco ( Figure 1 , shown below). Moreover, it analyzes how the destruction of the Temple ( Tuki ) of Guadalupe Ocotán, together with the modification of the community's territory, determined the collapse of these ceremonial links in the second half of the 20th century. The ceremonial reorganization of this district is analyzed using a diachronic perspective, in which the ethnographic record, which begins with Lumholtz' work in the late 19th century, is contrasted with reports by missionaries and oral history. Similarly, on the basis of ethnographic data and information provided by archaeological studies, this study offers a reinterpretation of certain ethnohistorical sources related to the antecedents of these ceremonial centers. -

We all had hearty lunches of pizzas, sandwiches, and pasta. Fred himself even dropped by to say hello! Jim Meacham shared copies of the Ohio History Connection’s Traveler’s Guide with everyone and we chatted about where we’ve been and what locations are still on our collective “bucket lists.” After lunch, we discussed where to hold upcoming meetings. The OSU facility is scheduled to open for meetings in the near future, however, with the current surge in COVID19 cases, attendees Asso suggested that we have other options in case OSU decides to close the facility again. Next month, our meeting will be held on 9 September at the beautiful Ohio’s Millennium Grove Tree Park on Bridge Street in Chillicothe. David Seaman (January 31, 1932 – ) was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, and grew up in a series of foster homes. He worked at the local YMCA and was a reporter for The Daily Courier in Connellsville in high school. Seaman served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from February 1951 to February 1954. He participated in military maneuvers at Yucca Flats, Nevada in 1952 during which a live atomic bomb test took place. In January 1953, just before leaving for Korea, he married Mary Miller of Louisville, Kentucky, and the couple later had three children: Nancy, Mark, and Don. Returning home from Korea, Seaman enrolled in Asbury College near Lexington, Kentucky in February 1954, and received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in May 1957. In August 1958, he completed his Master of Arts in Ancient Languages and Literatures at the University of Kentucky. He then received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1965. His dissertation, entitled Modern Greek and American English in Contact, was published in 1972. Seaman accepted a position at Northern Arizona University in 1967, where he was a professor of linguistics in the department of Anthropology until his retirement in 1994. -

THE SYMBOLOGY OF THE ROOSTER By Maria Manuela d’Oliveira Martins Director of Museu do Oriente Several symbologies are given to the rooster in the Western and Eastern cultures. In all of them, it is universally connected to the cult of the sun because its chant announces sunrise. But the rooster becomes more relevant in China, either for its physical characteristics and grandness or its behaviour, which convey five virtues: the civil virtue, represented by the comb, confering the look of a mandarin; the military virtue, because of the spur, symbol of bravery; courage, shown by its behaviour in fights (in countries where cockfights are allowed); kindness, for sharing food with the hens; trust, for the assurance which announces daylight everyday. In this country the rooster is the tenth animal of the Chinese zodiac along with the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, dog and pig. In 2017 the year of the monkey will end and the year of the rooster will begin. Roosters in China are not eaten or killed. They are considered protectors against demons. Having a painting of a red rooster at home means protection against fire. Placing a white rooster in a coffin keeps the dead away from demons. In Chinese mythology, the rooster also means honesty, for its accuracy in marking time, and masculine strength. Cockfights, known in China since the 1st millennium B.C., became a very popular sport in the south, even though they were forbidden. Its chant symbolizes fullfilment and fame. The Chinese word ‘rooster comb’ (guan) is homophonous to ‘guan’ meaning official. -

1 Secularization of religion in Indonesia: From Custom to Pancasila and back to adat Stephen C. Headley (CNRS) [Version 3 Nov., 2008] Introduction: Why would anyone want to promote or accept a move to normalization of religion? Why are village rituals considered superstition while Islam is not? What is dangerous about such cultic diversity? These are the basic questions which we are asking in this paper. After independence in 1949, the standardization of religion in the Republic of Indonesia was animated by a preoccupation with “unity in diversity”. All citizens were to be monotheists, for monotheism reflected more perfectly the unity of the new republic than did the great variety of cosmologies deployed in the animistic cults. Initially the legal term secularization in European countries (i.e., England and France circa 1600-1800) meant confiscations of church property. Only later in sociology of religion did the word secularization come to designate lesser attendance to church services. It also involved a deep shift in the epistemological framework. It redefined what it meant to be a person (Milbank, 1990). Anthropology in societies where religion and the state are separate is very different than an anthropology where the rulers and the religion agree about man’s destiny. This means that in each distinct cultural secularization will take a different form depending on the anthropology conveyed by its historically dominant religion expression. For example, the French republic has no cosmology referring to heaven and earth; its genealogical amnesia concerning the Christian origins of the Merovingian and Carolingian kingdoms is deliberate for, the universality of the values of the republic were to liberate its citizens from public obedience to Catholicism. -
