Gustav Heinemann (23.07.1899) "Ich liebe nicht den Staat, ich liebe meine Frau" – der dritte Bundespräsident macht sich im Nachkriegsdeutschland stark für Bürger- und Menschenrechte. Aufgewachsen ist er im Ruhrgebiet, 40 Jahre lang lebt er in der Essener Schinkelstraße. Seine Leidenschaft gilt der Demokratie. Nach dem Krieg, von 1945 bis 1949, ist der Jurist als CDU-Mitglied Oberbürgermeister von Essen und in den Jahren 1947 und 1948 außerdem Justizminister von Nordrhein-Westfalen. 1949 wird Heinemann dann Innenminister, aber nach einem Jahr legt er das Amt nieder, weil er ein Gegner der von Konrad Adenauer eingeleiteten Wiederbewaffnung ist. Nach einer Phase der eigenen Parteigründung der GVP, tritt Gustav Heinemann 1957 der SPD bei. Von 1966-1969 ist er Justizminister und führt viele Reformen durch. 1969 wir Heinemann schließlich zum Bundespräsidenten gewählt. 1976 stirbt der Politiker in Essen. Der Bochumer ist eigentlich Chemieingenieur von Beruf, wird im Zweiten Weltkrieg aber als Marinefunker eingesetzt und entwickelt sich aus privatem Antrieb zum Weltraumforscher. Nach dem Krieg gründet der Selfmade-Astronom die Sternwarte Bochum. -

1 Secularization of religion in Indonesia: From Custom to Pancasila and back to adat Stephen C. Headley (CNRS) [Version 3 Nov., 2008] Introduction: Why would anyone want to promote or accept a move to normalization of religion? Why are village rituals considered superstition while Islam is not? What is dangerous about such cultic diversity? These are the basic questions which we are asking in this paper. After independence in 1949, the standardization of religion in the Republic of Indonesia was animated by a preoccupation with “unity in diversity”. All citizens were to be monotheists, for monotheism reflected more perfectly the unity of the new republic than did the great variety of cosmologies deployed in the animistic cults. Initially the legal term secularization in European countries (i.e., England and France circa 1600-1800) meant confiscations of church property. Only later in sociology of religion did the word secularization come to designate lesser attendance to church services. It also involved a deep shift in the epistemological framework. It redefined what it meant to be a person (Milbank, 1990). Anthropology in societies where religion and the state are separate is very different than an anthropology where the rulers and the religion agree about man’s destiny. This means that in each distinct cultural secularization will take a different form depending on the anthropology conveyed by its historically dominant religion expression. For example, the French republic has no cosmology referring to heaven and earth; its genealogical amnesia concerning the Christian origins of the Merovingian and Carolingian kingdoms is deliberate for, the universality of the values of the republic were to liberate its citizens from public obedience to Catholicism. -

Transborder TheorIes and ParadIgms In EthnomusIcological StudIes of Folk MusIc: VIsIons for Mo Lam in Mainland Southeast Asia ThIs talk explores the nature and IdentIty of tradItIonal musIc, prIncIpally khaen musIc and lam performIng arts In northeastern ThaIland (Isan) and Laos. Mo lam refers to an expert of lam singIng who Is routInely accompanIed by a mo khaen, a skIlled player of the bamboo panpIpe. DurIng 1972 and 1973, Dr. ChonpaIrot conducted fIeld studIes on Mo lam in northeast Thailand and Laos with Dr. Terry E. Miller. For many generatIons, LaotIan and Thai villagers have crossed the natIonal border constItuted by the Mekong RIver to visit relatIves and to partIcipate In regular festivals. However, ChonpaIrot and Miller’s fieldwork took place durIng the fInal stages of the VIetnam War which had begun more than a decade earlIer. DurIng theIr fIeldwork they collected cassette recordings of lam singIng from LaotIan radIo statIons In VIentIane and Savannakhet. ChonpaIrot also conducted fieldwork among Laotian artists living in Thai refugee camps. After the VIetnam War ended, many more Laotians who had worked for the AmerIcans fled to ThaI refugee camps. ChonpaIrot delIneated Mo lam regIonal melodIes coupled to specIfic IdentItIes In each locality of the music’s origin. He chose Lam Khon Savan from southern Laos for hIs dIssertation topIc, and also collected data from senIor Laotian mo lam tradItion-bearers then resIdent In the United States and France. These became his main informants. -
