The average teen now spends an average of 4 to 5 hours per day with “new media” (texting, internet, gaming & video chat) Percentage who spent an hour or more of leisure time alone per day (1976-2016)

Percentage of teens who frequently get together with friends declined by about 30% between 2010 to 2015 What is happening to our teens?

● Increased social media usage is strongly correlated with increased rates of unhappiness, loneliness, anxiety and depression ● Spending 3 or more hours per day engaged in screen time is associated with increased suicidal risk factors

What can parents do? A few tips from experts...

● Encourage face-to-face time with peers and family ● Set boundaries around texting & social media usage, especially while studying and during meal times ● Engage in frequent conversations about what your student is doing online ● Set a time in the evening by which all devices are out of the bedroom ● Be a role model by using devices in moderation Recommended Reading
