Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman Area Volume 34.1 — April 2011 THE TONES OF NUMERALS AND NUMERAL-PLUS-CLASSIFIER PHRASES: ON STRUCTURAL SIMILARITIES BETWEEN NAXI, NA AND LAZE* Alexis Michaud LACITO-CNRS Abstract: Numeral-plus-classifier phrases have relatively complex tone patterns in Naxi, Na (a.k.a. Mosuo) and Laze (a.k.a. Shuitian). These tone patterns have structural similarities across the three languages. Among the numerals from ‘1’ to ‘10’, three pairs emerge: ‘1’ and ‘2’ always have the same tonal behaviour; likewise, ‘4’ and ‘5’ share the same tone patterns, as do ‘6’ and ‘8’. Even those tone patterns that are irregular in view of the synchronic phonology of the languages at issue are no exception to the structural identity within these three pairs of numerals. These pairs also behave identically in numerals from ‘11’ to ‘99’ and above, e.g. ‘16’ and ‘18’ share the same tone pattern. In view of the paucity of irregular morphology—and indeed of morphological alternations in general—in these languages, these structural properties appear interesting for phylogenetic research. The identical behaviour of these pairs of numerals originates in morpho- phonological properties that they shared at least as early as the stage preceding the separation of Naxi, Na and Laze, referred to as the Proto-Naish stage. Although no reconstruction can be proposed as yet for these shared properties, it is argued that they provide a hint concerning the phylogenetic closeness of the three languages. Quantification and Predication in Mandarin Chinese: A Case Study of Dou Abstract In the more recent generalized quantifier theory, 'every' is defined as a elationr between two sets such that the first set is a subset of the second set (Cooper (1987), anv Benthem (1986)). We argue in this dissertation that the formal definition of e' very' ought to reflect our intuition that this quantifier is always associated with a pairing. For instance, 'Every student left' means that for every student there is an event (Davidson (1966), Kroch (1974), Mourelatos (1978), Bach (1986)) such that the student left in that event. We propose that the formal translation of EVERY be augmented by relating its two arguments via a skolem function. A skolem function links two variables by making the choice of a value for one variable depend on the choice of a value for the other. This definition of EVERY, after which 'every' and its Chinese counterpart 'mei' can be modeled, can help us explain the co-occurrence pattern between 'mei' and the adverb 'dou'. -
What Are the Limits of Polysynthesis?

Michael Fortescue, Marianne Mithun, and Nicholas Evans Of the various labels for morphological types currently in use by typologists ‘polysynthesis’ has proved to be the most difficult to pin down. For some it just represents an extreme on the dimension of synthesis (one of Sapir’s two major typological axes) while for others it is an independent category or parameter with far- reaching morphosyntactic ramifications. A recent characterization (Evans & Sasse 2002: 3f.) is the following: ‘Essentially, then, a prototypical polysynthetic language is one in which it is possible, in a single word, to use processes of morphological composition to encode information about both the predicate and all its arguments, for all major clause types [....] to a level of specificity, allowing this word to serve alone as a free-standing utterance without reliance on context.’ If the nub of polysynthesis is the packing of a lot of material into single verb forms that would be expressed as independent words in less synthetic languages, what exactly is the nature of and limitations on this ‘material’? Periphrasis in Ontogeny and Phylogeny Michael Tsai May 17, 2001 1 Introduction Periphrasis may be defined as “the use of longer, multi-word expressions in place of single words”1 [Haspelmath 2000, p. 654]. The term applies in many linguistic domains, from verb conjugation (with temporal auxiliaries) to comparative forms (with more) to interrogatives (with do). A periphrastic expression is composed of free morphemes, while a monolectic expression consists of a single word that may be composed of several morphemes bound together, e.g. through inflection. This distinction applies not just to expressions, but also to whole languages: so-called analytic (isolating) languages contain mostly monomorphemic words and rely heavily on syntax to express meaning, synthetic (inflectional) languages rely more on morphology, and polysynthetic languages can express whole sentences as a single string of bound morphemes [O’Grady 1997]. However, these terms are rough classifications, and many languages contain both analytic and synthetic elements, sometimes even in the same paradigm. The balance between the two differs with the area of grammar under consideration, but it may also differ within the same area of grammar over time. In this paper we will examine the tension between periphrastic and bound forms with respect to two aspects of grammar: tenses and interrogatives. We will examine these from the perspectives of language creation and language change, drawing on evidence from creoles2 and historical linguistics. Results from language acquisition will link these two disciplines and suggest motivations for the diachronic changes and the patterns that emerge. 1Strictly speaking, the boundary between periphrasis and discourse is ill-defined, for it depends upon what languages exist and what linguists know about them. -

An Explanation Based on a Native Chinese Speaker’s Early Experience Cheng Li Yunnan Normal University, China [email protected] Abstract This article reports on my early experiences with learning and speaking varieties of Chinese, responding to the curious questions on the power relationship between Mandarin and other dialects in China today. A series of important life events and experiences are presented and discussed with regard to the historical and cultural context within which I learned Mandarin, Cantonese and other dialects at an early age. I argue that different varieties of Chinese are not only integral to Chinese history and culture, but also constituent of my identity as a native Chinese speaker. This study emphasizes that the dominance of Mandarin in contemporary China needs to be discussed under the umbrella of Chinese civilization and in consideration of rural- urban migrants’ benefits. Keywords: Native Chinese speaker; Mandarin; Cantonese; language policy; dialect As a native Chinese speaker , I was asked many curious questions on the language(s) spoken in China during the years I lived in St. John’s, Canada as an international Ph.D. student. The most frequently received questions concerned Chinese, Mandarin, and Cantonese. “Do you speak Chinese, Mandarin or Cantonese?”, “Is the Chinese class in your school, in fact, a Mandarin class?” “Do the Cantonese people in Chinatown speak Cantonese or Chinese?” I was shocked when I first received these questions since my Canadian friends knew more about varieties of Chinese than I had expected. -

Phonology of Kunming Chinese
Phonology of Kunming Chinese Ruolan Li [email protected] University of Rochester 1. Introduction Yunnan is a province in Southern China. Although the province is ethnically and linguistically diverse, the variant from standard Mandarin, Yunnanese, is spoken at many, if not most places. As one of Southwestern Guanhua (lit. court language), it diverged from a common ancestor of Mandarin in early Ming dynasty (14–15th century). When soldiers and government officials were sent from Nanjing to Yunnan, at that time relatively remote and undeveloped, they carried Nanjing Mandarin to the province (Hammarström, Forkel, and Martin, 2017; Zeng, 2018). Over the several hundred years, the Yunnan dialect became mutually unintelligible with modern standard Mandarin (Gui, 1990) and diverse locally in many difference cities and counties. In this project, I will focus on Kunming Chinese, a branch of Yunnanese. Kunming is the capital city of Yunnan province, and Kunming Chinese is used everywhere on the street. The choice of Kunming Chinese, rather than other Yunnanese sub-dialects, is made not because of any prestige reasons, but only because it is more accessible to me. The Kunming dialect has a speaker population of about 650, 000 (Gui, 1990). It is highly analytic, and belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family. Syntactically, it has some grammatical particles (/gə31/, /gɑ53/, both question particles, and /nə44/, as a possessive particle) that is distinct from standard Mandarin (Gao, 2004). Lexically, Kunming Chinese also has many unique nouns and verbs. It has several different phonological contrast from other branches of Yunnanese, but is overall unified within the dialect. -

However, there is high variability in the acoustic signal. The realization of sounds can be quite different from the stored representation due to different speaking styles, speaking rate and phono- logical factors such as coarticulation and phonological alternation. Therefore, one of the central goals of research on spoken word recognition are to elucidate the nature of speech sounds, i.e. how are they represented in the mental lexicon, as it could inform the recognition process that accesses those representations. There are two views on the representation of speech sounds. The abstract repre- sentation view argued that speech sounds are abstractly represented in the brain, ignoring certain sources of variation and leaving the redundant surface acoustic- phonetic details underspecified. For example, in English, the nasals in coda posi- tion are usually not fully specified and tend to assimilate the place of articulation of the following plosives (Lahiri & Reetz 2010). The surface representation view maintained that episodic details of speech sounds are retained in the brain. For ex- ample, talker-specific effects were found in repetition primingDufour ( & Nguyen 2014). Most research in this field has focused on the representation of segmental fea- tures, but the representation of suprasegmental elements such as tone is also im- portant, especially for languages that use tone to distinguish word meanings. -
