    WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL! My first experience at the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival was nothing short of mesmerizing. This grassy hill transformed into a theater for all of Los Angeles. Everyone who makes this city vibrant, inclusive, and ever-changing was bringing to life Shakespeare’s plays (on stage and in the audience) in a way I’d never seen before: the classics made uniquely contemporary; unrivaled artistry in an informal environment; people as diverse on stage as off; every walk of life, ages, backgrounds, families, dates, friends—gathered to experience the power and importance of live theater. Every summer brings with it the excitement of being back in the park to see this work and to be together. I will admit, I sometimes let my attention wander from the action to see who is here and to say hello to another fan of Independent Shakespeare Co. I invite you to do the same because this mesmerizing experience you’ll share tonight is one that will strengthen this community that we call theater and that we call Los Angeles.
