NELSON ZWEIGELT 2019 Awards 90 Points (4.5 Star) - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit 2020 Silver - Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2021, New Zealand Wine Analysis Vineyard: Seifried Brightwater Vineyard Sugar at Harvest: 23.8°Brix Date of Harvest: Late March 2019 pH of Wine: 3.41 T.A of Wine: 6.3g/L Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans: Yes e Vineyard Our Brightwater Vineyard is situated 15km from the coast and is sheltered from the south by the Richmond ranges. e ‘soil’ is a combination of rocks and boulders, which is very hard on the farm equipment, but vital for holding the warmth of Nelson’s sun and for ripening the Zweigelt grapes. e Brightwater vines are grown in an extremely stony area of the vineyard, where water and nutrient levels are low. is helps us to restrict the plants vigour and to crop at low levels. Winemakers Note e Zweigelt is a red grape variety originating in Hermann’s homeland of Austria. It is a favourite at Seifried family gatherings. Our Brightwater vineyard has just 11 rows, totalling less than one hectare of Zweigelt vines. Zweigelt has full round berries and bunches, with rich purple skin and intense fruit avours. e grapes were de-stemmed and fermented on their skins, and hand plunged twice a day. Following fermentation, the wine was gently pressed from the skins and transferred to a mixture of new and three year old French oak barriques. e wine underwent malolactic fermentation and remained in barrel for 12 months. e wine was racked from the barrel in May 2020. Tasting Note e 2019 Seifried Zweigelt comes from the outstanding hot, dry growing season we enjoyed in Nelson during 2018 - 2019. e wine has a deep dark red tone with dense dark fruit aromas. e palate has a rich fruit weight with dark plums, Christmas cake and mocha avours. Heinrich, `Red` Burgenland Zweigelt/Blaufränkisch/St. Laurent 2013 Neusiedlersee, Burgenland, Austria PRODUCER Gernot Heinrich has 100 hectares of vines in Gols, Burgenland, which is Austria's easternmost province, lying only a few kilometres from the Hungarian border. After graduating in viticulture from Klosterneuberg, Gernot's vinous travels in Bordeaux, Spain, California and Italy convinced him that his best approach in this continental climate was to use indigenous grapes such as Blaufränkisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt to make the highest quality, most characteristic wines he could. VINEYARDS The fruit for this wine is sourced from both sides of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. On the west side of the lake, the vines are found on the limestone and slate slopes of the Leithagebirge. On the east side of the lake, grapes come from the gravelly Parndorf Plateau and the humus-rich Heideboden. St Laurent is grown on the higher slopes and Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt on the heavier soils lower down. The oldest vines are 30 years old. Gernot has been farming his vineyards according to biodynamic principles since 2006 and achieved certification in 2009. VINTAGE Burgenland had beautiful weather throughout 2013, with heat waves and periods of rainfall. The grapes took their time to ripen and those winemakers who were brave enough to wait patiently were rewarded with beautifully ripe ones. Blaufränkisch was the only grape variety in Burgenland to be affected by coulure. After the two highly ripe vintages of 2011 and 2012, which delivered monumental red and white wines, the 2013 vintage almost perfectly represents the "Austrian ideal" of freshness, raciness and animated drinkability.

The base wine was aged in large used barrels. After the second fermentation, the sparkling wine ages for 24 months on the yeast. The goal is the underline the varietal character. Tasting Notes: Dark red color, fruity taste of cherries, plums and herbs. Red sparkling wine – unconventional and rare. Very pleasant and seductive in its dry finish. A niche product. Zweigelt is the most important red grape in the area, Professor Zweigelt lived in Langenlois! Sekt: In 1989 Karl Steininger started with the traditional bottle fermentation for his Sekt. He created an Austrian sparkling wine philosophy by using only typical Kamptal varieties. In the classic line the secret of success is based on two factors: on the one hand the high quality of the base wines, which present themselves clear, fruity and aromatic and on the other hand the gentle second fermentation in the bottle. Both factors together match the character of each variety and the flavor profile of the base wine. Category ”Reserve“: The grapes for the sparkling wines of the category ”Reserve“ must be harvested and pressed in a single Austrian federal state. They also have to be harvested by hand. Further the sparkling wine must be produced according to the traditional method of bottle fermentation.

During flowering, the weather was very hot. At the end of August the weather changed completely; temperatures dropped and there was a lot of rainfall during harvest. At Heinrich a lot of time was spent in the vineyard to accurately select the grapes, and thus 2014 has given wines with much finesse and freshness. VINIFICATION The grapes were hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard at the beginning of September. All movement of the juice was carried out by gravity.

This confers great aromas and vigorous acidity to the grapes. Production: Grüner Veltliner represents over 50% of the production. It can be found in different styles, from a light summer wine to powerful and voluminous full-bodied wines as well as dessert wines and our speciality - the sparkling wines, which are produced according to the traditional bottle fermenting method. SINGLE VINEYARD SPARKLING WINE – Grosse Reserve Grüner Veltliner Steinhaus Grosse Reserve Sekt 2015 Steinhaus is hard weathered granite vineyard with a light humus layer. It is slightly southwest aligned with optimal sunlight. – Perfect requirements for mineralic wines. The base wine was matured in large neutral oak casks, giving sufficient rest period on the lees.

BLAUER ZWEIGELT TERRASSEN 2017 Origin and Terroir Grapes for Blauer Zweigelt Terrassen were carefully hand-picked from various small vineyards throughout the Wachau valley. The majority of the grapes come from the villages of Weissenkirchen, Wösendorf, Joching, Rossatz-Arnsdorf and Mautern. The Zweigelt vines grow mainly on steep walled terraced vineyards with primary rock and partly on loess terraces with heavier sandy soils. Grape Variety Blauer Zweigelt, also known as Rotburger, is a typical Austrian grape variety and a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. In Austria, Zweigelt is mostly vinified to fresh, fruity and appealing red wines. Only 6% of Domäne Wachau’s total production is red wine (mainly Zweigelt and some Pinot Noir and St. Laurent). Classification Blauer Zweigelt Terrassen is not represented as a part of the three quality categories Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd since these categories only apply to white wines and rosé wines. According to Austrian wine law, this red wine is categorized as a “quality wine from Wachau“. Vinification Zweigelt grows easily and most typically produces uncomplicated, easy drinking wines. In order to cultivate high quality grapes, ridged crop management in the vineyards is essential in order to keep yields down and flavor concentration high. The unique growing conditions on the terraces also help restrict the yields without much human intervention. The grapes for this Zweigelt were harvested at the beginning of October with an average yield of 5.000 kg/ha. They were then destemmed, crushed and fermented by applying classical mash fermentation with 15% juice extraction for several days. Malolactic fermentation and maturation followed in big wooden casks in order to achieve balance and round-off tannin.
