2020 Team Sprint and Team Pursuit Selection Criteria Team selections will be done during the March 5-6th Cycling BC Track Camp, with final team preparation occurring during the final camp on March 26-27th. The selection will be a committee decision by a team of BC Coaches. Coaches will be choosing the fastest combination of riders for a team, not just the fastest individuals. The Coaches will use both objective (times) and subjective (rider’s skills) criteria to determine the fastest teams. All U17 riders are to run 86-88” gear. This is to compensate for the slower conditions at the Burnaby velodrome, so riders perform at the race cadence we expect to see at Milton. U19 riders can run their choice of gearing. U19 riders will have access to CBC disc wheels for trials. Athletes that are selected to the provincial team and will be traveling and racing for CBC in the team events are to wear CBC kit for the full duration of the event (including individual events). Team Events at Nationals: *U17 W: 500m Team Sprint minimum 2 (up to 3) riders; 3km Team Pursuit minimum 4 (up to 5) riders. *U17 M: 750m Team Sprint minimum 3 (up to 4) riders; 3km Team Pursuit minimum 4 (up to 5) riders. **U19 W: 500m Team Sprint minimum 2 (up to 3) riders; 4km Team Pursuit minimum 4 (up to 5) riders. **U19 M: 750m Team Sprint minimum 3 (up to 4) riders; 4km Team Pursuit minimum 4 (up to 5) riders. *Team races as composite. **Team races as Cycling BC. Selection process: Team Sprint 1. Timed events: 500m standing start from starting gate. Times will be taken at 200m, 300m, 400m, and 500m. 2. Group Trials (if needed): From the standing starts, groups will be created from the fastest 200m/400m times and run through full distance race trials. There may be multiple race trials so that riders with similar times can be switched around in position and groupings to allow for comparisons in team times. This will help coaches observe skills and determine the fastest rider combinations for each team. 3. Skills that will be observed and evaluated: • Standing start o Comfortable and relaxed during timer countdown. o No bike movement before the starting gun (i.e. false start). o Butt goes up and off the seat at the appropriate time. o Good timing on the start. o Powerful acceleration forward with strong arms and hips driving power. o Rides in a consistent straight line into corner 1. o Standing through the first half lap. • Riding on a wheel o Sits comfortably on the rider’s wheel (with appropriate space and directly behind). o Does not overlap or underlap wheels (aside from exchange rush). o Anticipates and can handle speed adjustment safely. o Rides smoothly and stable in the paceline and minimises flicks or abrupt movements. • Demonstrate proper team sprint exchange technique o Lead rider moves to the red line exiting corner 4, and has fully exited the sprinter’s lane by the pursuit line (and no later than 15m past the pursuit line). o When leading rider is leaving the lane, the following rider preforms a rush, where their front wheel never fully passes the lead riders front wheel before crossing the pursuit line. • Team work o Rides for the success of the team and acts in a manner that benefits the team rather than the individual. o Trains well with others. • Grit o Rider pushes themselves as hard as possible and doesn’t give up prematurely in efforts. o Strong work ethic. o Demonstrates resiliency. Team Pursuit: 1. Timed events: 500m standing start (from TS trials), 2km/3km IP using holders. 2. Group Trials (if needed): Groups will be created from the fastest IP times and run through flying 1-4km efforts and standing 1-4km efforts. There may be multiple race trials so that riders with similar times can be switched around in position and groupings to allow for comparisons in team times. This will help to allow for the coaches to observe skills and determine the fastest rider combination for each team. 3. Skills that will be observed and evaluated: • Standing start technique: o Comfortable and relaxed during timer countdown. o No bike movement before the starting gun (i.e. false start). o Butt goes up and off the seat at the appropriate time. o Good timing on the start. o Powerful acceleration forward with strong arms and hips driving power. o Rides in a consistent straight line into corner 1. o Standing through the first half lap. • Riding on a wheel: o Sits comfortably on the rider’s wheel (with appropriate space and directly behind). o Does not overlap or underlap wheels at any point during the ride (or rides the blue band). o Anticipates and can handle speed adjustment safely. o Rides smoothly and stable in the paceline and minimises flicks or abrupt movements. o Can ‘round the track’ if applicable. • Exchanges: o Carries speed off the front of the group up the banking. o Exchanges high in the banking, well above the blue line. o Uses a sharp enough decent to accelerate back onto the group. o Slots back onto the group upon arrival back into the team. o Does not need to chase onto the group after exchanges. • Finishing formation: o Displays proper knowledge of finishing formation, where lead rider floats up to the blue line exiting corner 4, second rider floats up the red line, and third rider stays in sprinters lane. • Pacing: o Ability to follow and interpret coach's direction and feedback for lap times, pacing, and pull length. o Is able to make tactical decisions and adapt during the team pursuit (i.e. do a longer or shorter pull). o Maintains the speed when at the front (regardless of pull duration). o Changes the speed by maximum 0.2 sec up or down towards the goal speed. • Communication: o Communicates appropriately only if situations arise during efforts. Examples of this are: using “steady” to control any acceleration, yelling “the number of rider left” if rider gets dropped, yelling “in” if there is a gap to be filled. • Team work: o Rides for the success of the team and acts in a manner that benefits the team rather than the individual. o Trains well with others • Grit: o Rider pushes themselves as hard as possible and doesn’t give up prematurely in efforts. o Strong work ethic. o Demonstrates resiliency. General: • Shows responsibility for self and for equipment. o Properly maintains and cares for personal and team equipment. o Can perform gear changes (and understand gear ratios). • Demonstrates timeliness. • Has the ability to give and receive feedback from coaches and teammates. • Is coachable - can listen and follow instruction. • Is respectful of all coaches and athletes. • Maintains focus and distraction control. .
