\, We have some funny words in the Christian Church! Why do we call it "Lent", when we don't lend anylhing? And why "Shrove" Tuesday? Pancake Day is much easier to understand.

You won't find the word "Lent" in the Bible. lt actually comes from an Old English word meaning "long", and probably refers to the way that the days visibly lengthen in Spring.

The 40 days of Lent, from Ash Wednesday to the day before Easter (excluding Sundays), are traditionally a time for prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial. Which tends to be translated as "what are you giving up for Lent?"

ln earlier times, people were forbidden from eating meat, eggs and dairy products during Lent. These had to be used up by the Tuesday, and pancakes became a popular way of doing this. (You can enjoy them this year in Ringmore Parish Room from 10.30 am.) There have been pancake races in Olney, Buckinghamshire, since 1445.

Shrove Tuesday thus became a time for festivities, releasing high spirits before the sombre season of Lent. lt was often called "Fat Tuesday" (hence "Mardi Gras"), and celebrated as a carnival day.

But "shrove" is actually the past tense of "shrive" (which also gives us the word "scribe"), and means to absolve. Belore the start of Lent, Christians were expected to confess their sins, do penance and obtain absolution.

So Lent is a time to take stock of our lives, a time to ponder on the teachings and work of Jesus Christ, a time to prepare for the triumph of Easter. Locally, there are meetings during Lent in Kingston, Loddiswell and Modbury (see posters for details), so come along and join others as we discuss, read and pray together. fl,";/,1

RINGMORE CALENDAR 2012 The Parish Room Committee intend to produce a2012 calendar in the hope that it will be as successful as the last two. We have decided not to have a competition this time but hope that all you keen photographers will submit pictures for consideration. As before, pictures should have some connection with Ringmore. Don't forget the further flung areas of the Parish such as Challaborough, Maruell and Renton. Any photos with children in them need a consent form signed by a parent. We can provide forms if needed. You can submit photos on a USB stick (preferred ), camera card or cd. The photos should have a minimum file size of 1.5 mb. The closing date for entries is May3lst and should be given to Barry Old or James Parkin. (Alan is having a rest this year!) The final selection, from a shortlist will be made by the Printers based on reproduction quality. Happy snapping!

FEBRUARY MEETING

!t came as something of a surprise to find out there's no such thing as a "Tall Ship"! During thettll a thoroughly amusing talk, Dave Bawden explained that we can thank John Masefield for mmmmtil this phrase taken from his poem "Sea Fever". Dave told of his extensive travels through the Panama Canal and around Cape Horn on Concordia, a Canadian schoolship run by Polish crew, which sank in extreme weather last year ofl the South American coast. His career included time with the Tallships Youth Trust working on Prince William & Stavros Niarchos helping young people further their confidence and independence in life, and an even more rewarding stint with the Jubilee Sailing Trust on Tenacious & Lord Nelson assisting disabled crew members to climb the rigging. High points ol the talk included the time he fired a broadside at the French during the Brest Festival and a video ol youngsters at sea.

Our new format means less time spent on "business" and a more social evening - so come and join us at the next meeting on MARCH 1Orh when James Parkin is hosting a Belgian Beer tasting event, entitled" Do Men Prefer Blondes?"

Computer scam Some people in the village have had calls recently from someone claiming to be from Microsoft. They say your computer has been reported as faulty and offer to run a diagnostic test to find the fault. They make money by persuading you that the test has found a lot of errors and hope you will pay them to removc them. Do not be fooled, this is a scam. You may remember that Richard Baker raised this issue in a prcvious newsletter. Neither Microsoft or any othcr reputable company would contact you in this way. They are random calls. oftcn from Africa and they work on the basis that a fair proportion of those called will have a computer. The best response? Say something rude/put the phone down. or ifyou want a bit offun say, "that's odd. I don't evcn have a computer." This should produce a silence at the other end and a rapid end to the call I Barry Old Neighbourhood Watch RINGMORE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING TUESDAY I5TH FEBRUARY WI HALL 7.OOPM

DECLARATION OF PREJUDICAL INTERESTS - M.Harnmond B.Lambell (item regarding The Royal British Legion)

OPEN SESSION Dr. Malcolm Finlay raised concerns regarding the proposed rock armour coastal det'ence to protect the clitT below 57 Murine Drive. He gave his reasons fbr objecting to this application as tbllows - it appears that no proper thought has gone into this planning application, and no adequate survey has been produced - it will have an unacceptable visual impact in an area of outstanding natural beauty - who will own it and be responsible tbr reinstatement should it move and keeping the structure clear of debris - who will be responsible lbr any uccidents that might occur - the roads that will be used by heavy trucks carrying material fbr this development are limited in capacity and in a tiagile state - betbre this rock armour is installed the applicants should be able to guarantee that the quality ol the surt'ing wave will not be compromised. Dr. Finlay then asked Parish Council il they would endorse his objections to thc planning ottice.

Mr. S. Purdy stated that fbllowing the installation of the drain pipe under Drukie Lane he is most disappointed ar rhe way the cxit pipe has been leli to drain the water onto his land. Instead of a small pipe being close to the ground it is now a large - opcningsomewhereupthewallwhichresultsinwatercascadingoutofthepipeontohislandcausingadeepgully. Roval British Leoion - Villaqe Car Scheme The Ringmore Branch of the British Legion is looking for ways in which the organisation can actively help the village community. One such idea under consideration is to instigate a car scheme. This would entail any villager offering their services to become a driver; and using their own car to transport someone to hospital - Derriford, or the Royal Eye lnfirmary. lt would be hoped also that the scheme could cover optician and dental appointments. ldeally, a central person in the village will hold a list of names of drivers who are keen to offer their services. Any villagers then wishing to use the services of this scheme for an appointment would phone the central person to advise them of their appointment date. They would then be informed who would take them to and from their appointment. We would wish to stress that this planned new scheme would not encroach upon the existing Modbury Caring drivers scheme which transports people to the Heath Centre in Modbury. The idea is to help and assist villagers to get to other appointments with the minimum of fuss.

lf any villager is interested in becoming a volunteer driver for this RBL village enterprise could they please get in touch with Phill or Sally on 81 0547. Please watch for more information on this scheme in the next issue of the Ringmore Newsletter.

.IOHN & JUNE MILNE.SMITH

We first got to know John and June shortly after they came to the village. I had discovered that John was a fellow Beekeeper. We enjoyed hearing about their life in British Guiana and over the years John and I spent many happy hours with our bees. He made a lot of his own equipment. which was often an improvement on the original and certainly better made. He quietly used his expertisi and attention to detail working on repairs and projects around the village. These included iefurbishing the Church bells and repairing the Church gates. replacing various parts. If anyone could not obtain a particular part. John could make one; and he did! We will miss them both in lots of ways. Newsfrom the National trust Article written by volunteer ranger Katy Holvey

With the days getting longer, and the weather getting very slightly warmer, the National Trustteam have been busy running events.

On 18th January the National Trust Rangers ran a photography event in Noss tvlayo with the help of photographer Dave Bassett. Dave was teaching those involved how to use and make the most of their cameias', and how to take great, memorable photographs. The weather was ideal and the scenery seemed designed for photography. Rather than just using a camera to point and shoot, Dave Bassett explained how to compose and expose a photo perfectly to capture the image individuals might be aiming for. Participants were inspired by thb stunning coastline dnd the small harbour-side village of Noss tvlayo and were able to produce some beautiful images. Another photography event is being run in lvlarch, see below for details.

As well as getting arty, the National Trust Rangers have been passing on their hedge laying skills. A Midlands slyb h6dge iaying coursewas run on Sunday 6'h February below Snapes Point near lt/alborough. Hedge laying is anlmportant management technique as it maintains a livestock barrier and creates a great wildli-fe niOitat for birds, insects and mammals. People were really interested in learning how to look after a hedge, and a few were going to go home and lay their own!

As part of the National Trust's Guardianship Scheme a group of 15-16 year old pupils from PlymstockSchool have been clearing scrub lrom Wembury Point. Every two weeks they arrive in their minibus and spend a few hours removing and burning gorse from the cliffside. On their last visit they split into two groups to hgvg a competition toiee who couldllear the most gorse, which meant that they got a huge amount of work done!

The community Art & Photography Competition is still running, so if you want to get involved and submit a piece ol art that depicts National Trust property between Wembury and Dartmouth, please contact Jvlarc Hoskins National, Trust Ranger, on 01548 5623M or [email protected]

Lent Course This year's lent course will start on Ash Wednesday, that's 9th March, at Judy & Adrian's house Barnford. The lent course lasting 6 weeks is based on the Jeff Lucas course, Life's Journey - The impossible Dream. This particular course also looks at our faith in terms of life in the developing world. Have a look for yourself using the following link: http:i/www.cwr.oro.uk/store/p-697-lile-iournevs-the-impossible-dream-dvd.aspx Further details may be obtained from Adrian & Judy on 810420.

Appointment of a new Vicar lnterviewing of the two applicants for the vacant Team Vicar post were conducted on Monday 28th February. Both candidates were shown around the various Team churches in the morning before returning to Modbury foi lunch. lnterviews were carried out in the afternoon when it is hoped a suitable candidate was chosen.

Annual Parish Meeting & The Annual Parochial Church Meeting This year these meetings will be held in All Hallows Church, on Wednesday 13th April starting at 7.30pm. The Annual Parish Meeting is open to all parishioners for the sole purpose of electing the Church Warden. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting following directly aftenrvards is also open to all but only those on the Electoral Role may participate in any vote. An Agenda will be posted in All Hallows porch in the near future and all are invited to attend. Monthly Giving The 2011 envelopes to those that regularly give to All Hallows on a monthly basis have recently been distributed. lt is a tremendous help as we can also collect the Gift Aid from tax payers which currently enhances contributions by around 25/". ll you have not received the envelopes and wish to participate in the scheme then please contact Adrian (810420). Many people, wrongly, worry that their giving disappears into centralfunds via the "Common Fund" and is wasted on unnecessary administration and hierarchy, but the figures show that the cost of the diminishing number of parish clergy exceeds the total contributions to the "Common Fund". This means the churches are net receivers from the diocese and contribute nothing towards the costs of Bishops, Archdeacons, administration etc. and this is true also for both for the Modbury Team as a whole and for Ringmore

Calling All Cleaners! A reminder that the pre-Easter church clean-up will take place on Saturday April 2nd from 10.00 am. Bring your cleaning things and have a morning that is satisfying and good fun.

THE ANT works hard, produces a lot and is happy. The Chiel, a lion, was surprised to see the ant was working without supervision.
