His words also describe the frameworks of this study. Authors write, and always have written, about the way they see the world and about their own realities. Literature is always also social, since it never arises in a vacuum but develops within its surroundings. An author writes in a certain tradition and communicates with and through it: either in adapting herself to it, or in opposing its conventions. Every work is an intertext, conscious or not, in a dialogue with the works which have preceded it or are yet to come. Also the influence of publishers is a part of this interaction: both their influence on authors and on their works.2 The realities Lundberg names have always included topics that opposed the conventions at the time they were written down and/or experienced. Some of them never found their way into the public sphere and might still lie undiscovered in some archive; others were published, often in a modified version. One of these unwelcome topics, in Finland as elsewhere, has long been anything queer, i.e. anything that is beyond what is perceived as “normal” and that questions heteronormative standards and values (i.e. those that see heterosexuality as the only “normal” and “natural” expression of sexuality). If we do not only mean canons and published works when talking about literary history, but also silenced voices, we will see that these silenced voices tell as much as canonised literature about the society behind the books, its expectations in terms of literature, and its norms and values. Therefore, this study focusses on different norms and values regarding sexuality and gender, and on the question how they are conveyed by literature. The literary works that will be analysed all raise the question which topics could be published, 1 “The one who writes will be the one who indicates the boundaries for the world; the one who writes down his story will be the one who creates reality, everything else is only dew, moist grass in a shallow wind.” (My translations throughout the text, if not mentioned otherwise.) 2 Svedjedal 1994, 16–17. 5 which voices have remained visible in literary history, and which have been silenced. Which roles were ascribed to women, and what expectations did society and literature have? The term decency has long played a central role with regard to the expectations of women and set the standards for them; moreover, especially in the first decades of Finnish independence, being a decent woman was closely connected to motherhood. If thus heteronorma- tivity3 was the standard, in which way was literature able to undermine or how did it confirm this standard, with the help of queer topics? The time span of the literary works analysed in this study from the first decade of the 20th century to the mid-1930s (and an excursion to the 1950s) is meaningful from two points of view. First, the time around the Finnish independence in 1917 meant a strong nationalist movement and a continuous discussion about and forming of gender roles. Especially the role of motherhood was central in this context – both for the understanding of femininity and for the nation – and will thus be in the focus of this study. Secondly, the wars – the First World War and the Finnish Civil War – also left a significant mark on Finnish society and gender roles, especially concerning the importance of the continuity of the nation and the struggles about a new definition of it. In general, the 1930s in Europe with the rise of Nazism also marked a decisive negative turn in relation to the attitude towards homosexuality. Yet, since Finland criminalised both male and female homosexuality in the Penal Code of 1889 (until 1971) and also any kind of encouragement of it, the country takes up a special position in the context of queer topics in literature. The material analysed in this thesis consists of literary works by established, yet not necessarily canonised authors that deal with queer topics in different ways, along with archival material related to these works: Finnish, Finland-Swedish and foreign books which are exemplary for different ways of dealing with queer topics in Finland especially in the 1920s and 1930s. Having examined a large amount of works with queer content published during that time in Finland, as well as works published abroad that have become classics, it became clear that some selecting criteria was needed. The criteria behind the selection of the fictional material for this thesis were the following: a first criterion was to choose the most central works of published literature in Finnish during the time in question which both contain queer content and focus on female literary characters. The same applied to Finland-Swedish literature. Another criterion was the status of the authors and/ or their works: the works I examine were either written by established

Applying constructionist social problems theory, it discusses the constructions of communism as a religious social problem, Christian piety as a solution to the problem of godless communism, and the religious legitimation of violence. The article argues that by identifying Christianity with the Finnish nation the construction of communism as a religious problem—itself an outcome of the influence of revivalist Lutheran ministers in the leadership of the movement—resonated with the broader audience, but that this indigenous religious nationalism lost support with the increasing belligerence of the movement. At the end of the 1920s Finland was a divided country. The Civil War of 1918, fought between the socialist “Reds” and the bourgeois and agrarian “Whites” in the aftermath of independence from (now Bolshevik) Russia, was a cultural trauma on par with the Spanish Civil War.1 The proportional death toll in the repression of the defeated Reds exceeded that of all other European civil conflicts in the inter-war era.2 Yet, despite the victory and the official banning of the Communist Party, some factions on the White side saw the re-emergence and 1 Sami Koskelainen has a Bachelor of Arts from University College London, School of Slavonic and East European Studies.

    FINLAND-SWEDISH LITERATURE IN THE CZECH FIELD OF LITERARY PRODUCTION Jan Dlask Charles University in Prague [email protected] Abstract This contribution, theoretically and methodologically inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's concept of a literary field, analyses the case of Finland-Swedish literature translations into Czech. This literature is viewed as Swedish-language minority literature in Finland after 1900. The field of literary production is small, but nevertheless represents a varied Finland-Swedish 'segment' in the Czech field. As such it constitutes a certain publishing field, having two polarities (commercial/intellectual; young/old) and being entered into by publishers and translators who select writers and books from a certain space of possibles. Print runs of the published books and the distribution of publishing grants are explored with a view to the sociological character of the research. The analysis is divided into sections according to genres and their presupposed place in the field. It is found that while the mechanisms in the Czech publishing field of Finland- Swedish literature are fragmentary (many different authors, works, translators and publishers), the Bourdieusian approach is a productive framework through which to view the division between the intellectual and commercial poles. The position of Finland-Swedish modernist poetry and prose – Edith Södergran, Bo Carpelan and Hagar Olsson, published by Práce and Odeon publishers – is especially significant on the intellectual pole, as well as the position of their advocates within the Czech field (e.g. Josef B. Michl). Short stories, extracts and essays, often belonging to the Finland-Swedish classics (e.g. Christer Kihlman, Henrik Tikkanen), were mainly published in cultural reviews.

There is no need to answer this, but perhaps we may assume that sooner or later someone would have written the books which would have formed the necessary building material for the national identity of the Finns. During the mid 1980s, when the 150th anniversary of the Kalevala was being celebrated in Finland, several international seminars were held and thousands of pages of research and articles were published. At that time some studies appeared in which the birth of the nation state was examined from a pan-European perspective. SMALL NATION STATES "The nation state - an independent political unit whose people share a common language and believe they have a common cultural heritage - is essentially a nineteenth-century invention, based on eighteenth-century philosophy, and which became a reality for the most part in either the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The circumstances in which this process took place were for the most part marked by the decline of great empires whose centralised sources of power and antiquated methods of administrations prevented an effective response to economic and social change, and better education, with all the aspirations for freedom of thought and political action that accompany such changes."     Dahlberg WHEN ARTISTS BECAME INTELLECTUALS: SCIENCE AS A SIGNIFICANT OTHER FOR THE FEMALE ARTISTIC PERSONA JULIA DAHLBERG ABSTRACT The increasing appreciation of science posed an interesting challenge to art in the late 19th Century. Modernisation, professionalisation, secularisation and technical novelties all seemed to question the social status of the artist. Arguing that one possible way for individual artists to meet this challenge was to incorporate elements of the scientific persona with their artistic self, this article focuses on the Swedish-speaking, Finnish artist and writer Helena Westermarck (1857–1938). While constructing an intellectual comradeship with her brother, the internationally well-known sociologist and anthropologist Edward Westermarck (1862–1939), Helena Westermarck often referred to the exceptional intellectual and analytical capacities of the artist. Arguing that the prestige of science could be used to lend credibility to the artistic persona, the article will discuss some of the ideas that led Westermarck to gradually fashion her public appearance as an artist into the persona of a public intellectual, writer and self-supporting (single) woman on equal terms with her brother.     Anthropology in Spain and in Europe Finland Ulrika Wolf-Knuts, Åbo Akademi University ([email protected]) In Finland we deal with three different denominations for the university disciplines falling under the title of our conference, Anthropology in Europe. Originally and very generally spoken, folklorists dealt with mental folk culture in Finland, such as ways of narrating, of believing in spiritual experiences, and of habits and customs. Ethnology concerned Finnish material folk culture and life modes, whereas anthropology, i.e. cultural anthropology and social anthropology, concerned non- European cultures. In practice, and nowadays, when established structures are thoroughly changed, the borders between the three disciplines are not at all sharp. As a matter of fact, anthropology inspire both folkloristics and ethnology when it comes to theories and methods, ethnologists do not stick to material culture, and folklorists are not happy with narratives or folk belief, only. Today the three disciplines have many topics, methods and theories in common. Everyday life is a central topic for investigations in all the three disciplines. The Finnish case of anthropology or ethnology is a matter of identity and therefore also a matter of contrasts. Language plays a great role in the formation of the discipline, as we shall see. Finland was part of Sweden until 1809, which meant that Swedish, after Latin, was the language of authorities, church and education. Nevertheless, the main language of the majority of the population was Finnish. After 1809 Finland became part of Russia, and thus there were three languages to deal with.
