Limited free parking available on site at Barnstaple, Holsworthy and Bideford. Parking charges apply in Braunton. On-street parking is available in Torrington.

The Terrace Café at North Devon Hospice sells hot and cold meals to suit many dietary requirements. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided, small donations to the Hospice are welcomed as contributions to cover these costs.

Personal requirements: please advise us in advance if you have access or learning support needs.

Evaluations: All delegates are asked to complete an evaluation form which allows us to continually review and improve our education and training sessions.

Certificates: Certificates of attendance will be issued after the course. An additional Certificate of Recognition will be sent to those who attend all of the outreach sessions.

This session will equip the attendee with simple yet effective communication skills to enable open conversations with those believed to be in their last year of life. Attendees will learn strategies to overcome barriers and facilitate discussion. Skills learned in this session empower the healthcare professional to keep the individual at the centre of their care and is relevant to all settings.

This session will enable the attendee to recognise physical and emotional symptoms of anticipatory loss, bereavement and grief. We will explore simple yet effective approaches to assess the potential impact of loss on an individual. Attendees will learn strategies to overcome barriers and facilitate discussion. Skills learned in this session empower the healthcare professional to keep the individual at the centre of their care, as well as supporting themselves and each other and is relevant to all settings.

“The Mental Capacity Act 2005 provides a statutory framework for people who lack capacity to make decision for themselves, or who have capacity and want to make preparations for a time when they may lack capacity in the future. It sets out who can take decisions, in which situations and how they should go about this” (Department of Constitutional Affairs, 2007). This session will enable the attendee to understand, recognise and know how to use the Mental Capacity Code of Practice. Skills learned in this session empower the healthcare professional to keep the individual at the centre of their practice, fulfilling their duty of care and is relevant to all settings.

Course runs 1 – 4.30pm Aims: To understand our duty of care under the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and code of conduct To understand the five statutory principles behind the Act and the way they affect how it’s put in practice To understand what the Act means by acting in the best interests of someone lacking capacity to make a decision for themselves, and describes the checklist set out in the Act for working out what is in someone’s best interest To understand how the Mental Capacity Act, advance care planning and consent are connected

This session will enable the attendee to understand the principles and practices for planning end of life care. Attendees will learn strategies which will encourage and empower open discussion enabling the person to identify and document their wishes and preferences. We will explore the key documents including Advance Care Plans, Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment and the Treatment Escalation Plan. Skills learned in this session support the person to develop their own end of life care plan and are therefore relevant to all settings.

This session will enable the attendee to understand the existence of total pain and how creative activity can help to alleviate it. We will explore simple yet effective activities for creative expression, through the development of mementos – enabling individuals to leave behind something they find meaningful and beautiful for their families. Attendees will learn to help individuals and those important to them to explore difficult emotions through the expression of creative art such as letters, journals, poetry, music, film or art.

The Five Priorities of Caring for the Dying Person provides guidance for identifying when a person reaches the end of their life. In this session, attendees will gain an understanding of this framework and how to apply it to their role. The five priorities are: • recognising the dying phase • communicating sensitively • involving those important to the person • supporting family and others • plan and do

Entry requirements: There are no prerequisites for this course. Attendees may wish to attend the Opening the Spiritual Gate study day. Time: Registration from 12.45pm. Course runs 1 – 4.30pm Aims: To be able to recognise and communicate clearly decisions made and actions taken in accordance with the person’s needs and wishes and ensure these are regularly reviewed and decisions revised accordingly To understand the importance of communicating sensitively with staff, the dying person and those identified as important to them To know how to involve the dying person and those identified as important to them in decisions about treatment and care to the extent that the dying person wants To know understand the importance of actively exploring, respecting and meeting the needs of the family and others as identified as important to the dying person as far as possible To understand the principles of developing an agreed individual plan of care (including food and drink, symptom control and psychological, social and spiritual support) and the importance of its compassionate, co-ordinated delivery

We provide specialist care to over 2,000 patients and their families each year who are facing a life limiting illness across North Devon. Our services include community support, inpatient care in our Bedded Unit and a Supportive Care service that includes bereavement support. Our services are delivered across North Devon, by a highly skilled team of specialists, covering 800 square miles at no cost to our patients or their families.

Referrals Referring your patients and/or their family members to us early ensures they can access a wide range of care and support services, at various points throughout their journey. 1. BOOKINGS We will only confirm course registration upon receipt of a completed booking form for a named delegate. A booking received via www.eventbrite.com for a named delegate will constitute a confirmed booking. Until such time course place requests remain provisional and therefore may be subject to cancellation. For courses run in conjunction with a third party such as Petroc or the University of , their booking terms and conditions must be adhered to.

2. TERMS OF PAYMENT Payment can only be made using an authorised credit card at the time of the transaction or by invoice where cheques are made payable to North Devon Hospice. Receipts for payment are provided in electronic format. For programmes with course fees, invoice payment terms are 30 days from date of invoice or at least 10 working days before the start of the course, whichever is sooner. For fully-subsidised courses invoice payment for cancellations are 30 days from date of invoice. If any information that you have given to us proves to be incorrect, which has resulted in our not charging you the correct fee for the courses that you are buying, we reserve the right to adjust the fee (upwards or downwards) so that it is the correct fee for your circumstances

3. TRANSFERS AND CANCELLATION OF TRAINING COURSES Delegates may transfer their registration for one course to another course up to 14 working days prior to the original course date. Once a delegate has transferred no refunds can be made for the cancellation of either course. Only one transfer by any delegate may be made. A named delegate may be substituted for another from the same organisation without notification.

If you cancel a training course: - all cancellations must be made no later than 5 working days before the start of relevant training course. We will only accept cancellations that are made in writing via email to [email protected] . If a delegate fails to attend a training course, or a cancellation is sought within the 5 working days prior to the start of such course, full payment will be required. Where the course is fully subsidised by the North Devon Hospice, an invoice for a cancellation fee of £25 for half day and £50 for full day courses will be issued, for payment within 30 days.

Deposits for Outreach sessions and Study Days will not be deposited without an unapproved cancellation. If we cancel a training course or change course content: - we reserve the right to cancel a training course at any time, without incurring any additional liability to any delegate. In such circumstances, we will offer alternative dates, a full refund or a credit note.

4. CONFIDENTIALITY Training materials circulated pursuant to the curriculum of that training course remain the property of the North Devon Hospice. Any information that is of a confidential nature, disclosed by the Hospice or any other attendees shall not be published or shared without express prior written consent. The North Devon Hospice encourage sharing of educational information only to those persons necessary for the purposes of the relevant training course and for enhancing performance of their duties and that of their peers.

5. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS By attending the course, you acknowledge that all intellectual property rights in the training materials belong to the North Devon Hospice, unless otherwise acknowledged. These training materials may be used in accordance with this agreement, solely for the purpose of sharing your learning with your colleagues, you have no rights in, or to, the training materials other than to use them for this purpose.

6. ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK Please refer to the North Devon Hospice Assessment and Feedback Policy, available upon request.

7. DATA PROTECTION All information that we hold concerning you will be held and processed by North Devon Hospice strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998.

8. OUR RIGHT TO VARY THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS We reserve the right to revise and amend these terms and conditions from time to time.
