Introduction Speaking about trade relations in South Kazakhstan, one can specify two areas on which they were performed. On one hand there was an intensive exchange of goods in the markets of cities lying "along the caravan route from Islamic world to China", it was a number of cities, including Syganak which was a capital of the Kipchak Khanate in XI-XIII centuries, became a center of White (Blue) Horde in XIV-XV centuries, and became a political center of the Kazakh Khanate in XV-XVI centuries. -

New way of living which was originated in Europe and representatives thereof became influential as guides and determinants of reconstruction process in the Ottoman Empire. It is possible to point out that the Ottoman Empire which got closer to France for handling military problems, to England for industrialisation purposes and to Italy for architecture and arts had intense communication and the resulting interaction with European states in the course of reconstruction process. This study aims to give information about the social, cultural and artistic environment in the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II (1876-1909). Nationalism was seen in important regions of the world, especially in Russia and Northern Europe. These nationalistic movements affected international art music composers of Turkey in the early years of Turkish Republic. Generally Turkish composers preferred to use traditional folk music elements instead of the elements of traditional art music. Either folk music with its melodic characteristic or maqam structure of art music is used by many international Turkish composers after the Turkish Fives. Generally, maqam factors are used as building stones in the compositions. The genre has been the less mentioned subject than maqam regarding the reflection of tradition. Besides, it is seen that the forms and genres of folk music are used in international art music. Here I present the composers’ preferences regarding Turkish music genres with notation samples. RAST MÜZİKOLOJİ DERGİSİ Uluslararası Müzikoloji Dergisi www.rastmd.com Doi:10.12975/rastmd.2016.04.01.00067 ISSUES OF MUSICAL IDENTITY DURING THE FOUNDATION OF THE TURKISH REPUBLIC (1923-1950) Adem Merter Birson1 ABSTRACT In the early years of the Turkish Republic, music was a central topic in the cultural reforms that aimed to guide Turkey in the modernism and progressivism that defined the first half of the twentieth century. Several issues were involved, including the “change of civilizations” from an Ottoman and Eastern identity to becoming more like a Western European nation-state. This was a period that saw the establishment of Western-style music conservatories and the employment of musicians and musicologists to help establish a national classical music based on Turkish folk elements. At the same time, media outlets such as radio helped to shape and disseminate a national folk musical style. Private music making and cultural exchange with the West also played an important role in shaping a new Ottoman style. All of these elements worked together to form a rich and complex fabric of musical identity during the early days of the Turkish Republic. T U R A N I S M AN ASPECT OF TURKISH NATIONALISM In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, as is generally known, the Ottoman Empire drifted away from the British orbit and came increasingly under the influence of Germany. It was the time when the British Foreign Office, after half a century of adhering to the principle of the integrity of the Ottoman Empire as a barrier to Russian expansionism, began to tolerate, or even support, the nationalist movement of the Balkan peoples and their claims against Turkey. At the beginning of Gladstone’s administration, in 1880, Montenegro, thanks to British as well as to Rus sian favor, acquired an outlet at Dulcigno (Ulcinj);1 a year later Abd-ul- Hamid II was compelled to cede Thessaly to Greece;2 on several occasions thereafter London registered an interest in behalf of the Cretans and the Armenians and reminded the sultan of his obligation to introduce reforms according to Articles 23 and 61 of the Berlin Treaty.3 No less important in Turkish eyes were Great Britain’s attempts to carve off Ottoman territories or to establish a foothold in the periphery of the declining empire. The retention of Cyprus by the British and the occupation of Egypt, the former in tune with Greek aspirations,4 5the latter in overt opposition to Egyptian nationalism,6 were equally severe blows to 1. So conditioned are we to locate the heyday of Ottoman architecture in the sixteenth century— and above all in the works of Sinan (d. 1588)— that it is difficult to credit that a later building could have excited such praise. If the first statement might be dismissed as mere hyperbole on the part of an Ottoman official involved in the mosque’s construction, the second— penned by a Frenchman with no connection to the project— cannot be so easily disregarded. Indeed, the widespread acclaim that greeted the Nuruosmaniye bespeaks a mo- mentous shift in the history of Ottoman architecture, one embedded in, and itself constitutive of, far- reaching sociopolitical developments. The Origin of the Cumans The question of where the Cumans originated has been the object of much study but a definitive answer to this cannot yet be given. The Cumans are known in Russian historical sources as Polovtsy and in Arabic sources generally as Kipchak Qipchak, although the Arabic author al-Marwazi writing about 1120 referred to them as Qûn, which corresponds to the Hungarian name for the Cumans, Kun. The Russian name for these people, Polovtsy < Slav. polovyi pale; pale yellow is supposedly a translation of the name Quman in Tur- kic, but there is no word in any Turkic dialect with this meaning; the only word in Turkic which at all approximates this meaning and has a similar form is OT qum sand, but this seems more an instance of folk etymology than a likely derivation. There is a word kom in Kirghiz, kaum in Tatar, meaning people, but these are from Ar. qaum fellow tribes- men; kinfolk; tribe, nation; people. The most probable reflexes of the original word in Tur- kic dialects are Uig., Sag. kun people, OT kun female slave and Sar. Uig. kun ~ kun slave; woman < *kümün ~ *qumun, cf. Mo. kümün, MMo. qu’un, Khal. xun man; person; people, and this is the most frequent meaning of ethnonyms in the majority of the worlds languages. The Kipchaks have been identified as the remainder of the Türküt or Türk Empire, which was located in what is the present-day Mongolian Republic, and which collapsed in 740. There are inscriptions engraved on stone monuments, located mainly in the basin of the Orkhon River, in what has been termed Turkic runic script; these inscriptions record events from the time the Türküt were in power and, in conjunction with information recorded in the Chinese annals of the time about them, we have a clearer idea of who these people were during the time their empire flourished than after its dissolution. -
