Ships and boats also fabled existence in classical Malay texts. Many types of ships and boats were told in classical Malay texts are mainly in the Story of King Banjar. This study aimed to describe and explain the ships and boats in the Story of King Banjar with semantic study. The theory used in this research is the theory of change in the region meaning of Ullmann. This paper will discuss the discovery of the types of ships and boats in the text of the King saga Banjar, the ketch, ship, selup, konting, pencalang, galleon, pelang, top, boat, canoe, frigate, galley, gurab, galiot, pilau, sum, junk, malangbang, barge, talamba, lambu, benawa, gusu boat or bergiwas awning, talangkasan boat and benawa gurap. In addition, it was also discovered that the word ship has a broader meaning than the words of other vessel types.     SURYADI,WACANA Sepucuk, VOL. surat 10 NO.dari 2, seorang OKTOBER bangsawan 2008 (214—245) Gowa 213 Sepucuk surat dari seorang bangsawan Gowa di tanah pembuangan (Ceylon) SURYADI Abstract This paper looks at an early nineteenth-century Malay letter from a land of exile, Ceylon (present Sri Lanka). The letter, written in Colombo, was dated 3 January 1807 and is in Leiden University Library MS Cod.Or.2241-I 25 [Klt 21/no.526]. It was written by Siti Hapipa, the widow of the exiled Sultan Fakhruddin Abdul Khair al-Mansur Baginda Usman Batara Tangkana Gowa, the 26th king of the Gowa Sultanate of South Sulawesi who reigned from 1753 until 1767. He was banished by the Dutch (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC) to Ceylon in 1767 on a charge of conspiracy with the British to oppose the VOC trading monopoly in eastern Indonesia. Although many studies of Malay letters exist, letters from the lands of exile like such as the one discussed in this article have received less scholarly attention. Also remarkable is that this is one of the rare eighteenth- and nineteenth-centuries Malay letters written by a female. Setting the scene with a historical sketch of the eighteenth and the early nineteenth century in colonial Ceylon and the Netherlands East Indies, this paper provides the transliteration of Siti Hapipa’s letter in Roman script, through which I then analyse the socio-economic and political aspects of the family of Sultan Fakhruddin in their exile in Colombo. The Russian Connection in Singapore’s Local Art Identity DAVID LOW KOK KIAT1 Abstract The uncritical acceptance of the Nanyang art discourse as central to the discussion of Singapore’s local art identity obfuscates its historical emergence from a richly pluralistic artistic milieu which existed from the 1920s to the 1940s. This article illustrates the diversity of artistic practice in Singapore during this period, through a case study of three Russian artists in Singapore: Anatole Shister, Vasily Zasipkin and Vladimir Tretchikoff. Examining their migration stories, as well as studying their art and their involvement in the local art world, the article reveals how global upheavals of this period informed Singapore’s artistic milieu, contributing to a cosmopolitan environment that allowed for interaction between artists from around the world. In Singapore, artists from different backgrounds and with diver- gent motives shared in the efforts of depicting local life, searching for local colour and painting the region.     Early Modern Southeast Asia, 1350–1800 This book presents extensive new research findings on and new thinking about Southeast Asia in this interesting, richly diverse, but much understudied period.
