The Visuddhimagga' s structure is based on the Ratha-vinita Sutta "Relay Chariots Discourse," MN 24 , which describes the progression from the purity of discipline to the final destination of nibbana in seven steps. This comparison between practice and "seven relay chariots" points at the goal. According to the various traditions of Buddhism, there have been buddhas in the past and there will be buddhas in the future. This is it, the masterful commentary on Buddha's path that is one of the cornerstones of Theravada Buddhism. -

In recent years Myanmar has attained special eminence as the host for the Sixth Buddhist Council, held in Yangon (Rangoon) between 1954 and 1956, and as the source from which two of the major systems of Vipassana meditation have emanated out into the greater world: the tradition springing from the Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw of Thathana Yeiktha and that springing from Sayagyi U Ba Khin of the International Meditation Centre. This booklet is intended to offer a short history of Buddhism in Myanmar from its origins through the country's loss of independence to Great Britain in the late nineteenth century. I have not dealt with more recent history as this has already been well documented. To write an account of the development of a religion in any country is a delicate and demanding undertaking and one will never be quite satisfied with the result. This booklet does not pretend to be an academic work shedding new light on the subject. It is designed, rather, to provide the interested non-academic reader with a brief overview of the subject. The booklet has been written for the Buddhist Publication Society to complete its series of Wheel titles on the history of the Sasana in the main Theravada Buddhist countries. -

A 6.2.1.9 Aṅguttara Nikāya 6, Chakka Nipāta 2, Dutiya Paṇṇāsaka 1, Mahā Vagga 9 11 Nibbedhika (Pariyāya) Sutta The Discourse on (the Exposition on) Penetrating Insight | A 6.63 Theme: A novel application of the noble truths as an overview of the way to spiritual freedom Translated with notes by Piya Tan ©2003, 2011 1 Sutta highlights 1.1 This popular sutta is often quoted in the Commentaries.1 It is a summary of the whole Teaching as the Way in six parallel methods, each with six steps: sensual desire, feelings, perceptions, mental influxes, karma, and suffering —each to be understood by its definition, diversity (of manifestation), result, cessa- tion and the way to its cessation. It is a sort of extended “noble truth” formula [§13]. In fact, each of analytical schemes of the six defilements (sensual desire, etc) is built on the structure of the 4 noble truths with the additional factors of “diversity” and of “result.” The Aṅguttara Comment- ary glosses “diversity” as “various causes” (vemattatā ti nānā,kāraṇaṁ, AA 3:406). In other words, it serves as an elaboration of the 2nd noble truth, the various internal or subjective causes of dukkha. “Re- sult” (vipāka), on the other hand, shows the external or objective causes of dukkha. 1.2 The Aṅguttara Commentary takes pariyāya here to mean “cause” (kāraṇa), that is, a means of pene- trating (that is, destroying) the defilements: “It is called ‘penetrative’ (nibbedhika) because it penetrates the mass of greed, etc, which had never before been penetrated or cleaved.” (AA 3:223) The highlight of the exposition is found in these two remarkable lines of the sutta’s only verse: The thought of lust is a person’s desire: The diversely beautiful in the world remain just as they are. -
Early Buddhist Metaphysics: the Making of a Philosophical Tradition
EARLY BUDDHIST METAPHYSICS This book provides a philosophical account of the major doctrinal shift in the history of early Theravada tradition in India: the transition from the earliest stratum of Buddhist thought to the systematic and allegedly scholastic philosophy of the Pali Abhidhamma movement. Conceptual investigation into the development of Buddhist ideas is pursued, thus rendering the Buddha’s philosophical position more explicit and showing how and why his successors changed it. Entwining comparative philosophy and Buddhology, the author probes the Abhidhamma’s shift from an epistemologically oriented conceptual scheme to a metaphysical worldview that is based on the concept of dhamma. She does so in terms of the Aristotelian tradition and vis-à-vis modern philosophy, exploiting Western philo- sophical literature from Plato to contemporary texts in the fields of philosophy of mind and cultural criticism. This book not only demonstrates that a philosophical inquiry into the conceptual foundations of early Buddhism can enhance our understanding of what philosophy and religion are qua thought and religion; it also shows the value of fresh perspectives for traditional Buddhology. Combining philosophically rigorous investigation and Buddhological research criteria, Early Buddhist Metaphysics fills a significant gap in Buddhist scholar- ship’s treatment of the conceptual development of the Abhidhamma. Noa Ronkin received her PhD from the University of Oxford. She is currently a lecturer in the Introduction to the Humanities Programme and a Research Fellow at the Center for Buddhist Studies, Stanford University. Her research interests include a range of issues associated with Indian Theravada Buddhist philosophy and psychology, the Abhidhamma tradition and comparative Indian philosophy. -

Humanistic Elements in Early Buddhism and the "Theravada Tradition" By Ananda W. P. Guruge ABSTRACT The paper begins with an examination of the different defuritions of humanism. Humanism primarily consistsof a concern with interests andideals of human beings, a way of peefection of human personality, a philosophical attitude which places the human and human val.Mes above all others, and a pragmatic system (e.g. that of F. C. S. Schiller and William James) whichdiscounts abstract theorizing and concentrates on the knowable and the doable. EarlyBuddhism, by whichis meant the teachingsof the Buddha as found in the PallCanon and the AgamaSutras, isdistinguished from other tradifions. The paperclarifies the error of equating Early Buddhism with the so-called Theravada Tradition of South and SoutheastAsia. Historically, the independent Theravada Tradifion with whatever specificity it had in doctrines came to an end when the three Buddhist schools (Mahavihara, Abhayagiri andJetavana) of SriLanka were unifiedin the twelfth century. What developed since then and spread to South andSoutheast Asia is an amalgam of allBuddhist traditions with the Pall Canon andits commentaries as the scriptures. With the reform measures in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, the kind of modern Buddhism prevalent as "Theravada" is flexible, tolerant and reinforced by modernizing influence of Western Christian values. The paper analyses references to the Buddha's own autobiographical statements and other data in the Pali Canon and Commentaries and shows that the Buddha stood as a man before human beings to demonstrate how they could develop themselves by their own effort and reach the end of suffering. This final goal of peefedion is within the reach of every human being. -

Early Buddhist imagination The Aṭṭhakavagga as Buddhist poetry Eviatar Shulman As is customary, this study on the Aṭṭhakavagga (‘The chapter of eights,’1 AV) of the Suttanipāta (SNip) opens by recalling that the AV is possibly the most ancient Buddhist scripture extant today. Almost certainly, together with the Pārāyaṇavagga (‘The chapter on the passage beyond,’ PV) and the Khaggavisāṇasutta (‘The dis- course on the rhinoceros horn,’ KVS), which are also housed in the Suttanipāta, this is the oldest layer of Buddhist texts in existence; many even see these scriptures as returning to the days of the his- torical Buddha. The main reason for this attribution is that these are the only texts that have a commentary on them included in the Pāli canon. Although we do not know when the canon received the shape we are familiar with, the archaic language of these texts, and in some cases their use of meter, suggests that they are very old. The AV is also referred to by name in other canonical sources and, like the PV, it is quoted in numerous instances.2 This corpus is thus considered to off er insights regarding what are possibly the earliest recorded forms of Buddhism. While most scholars agree that the PV is at least as old as the AV, 3 if not older,4 the latter has received far greater scholarly atten- tion. Dhammapada v.103 AIMS AND RATIONALE OF THE CONFERENCE This conference, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with a number of universities and organizations, will explore correspondences between Buddhism and IHL and encourage a constructive dialogue and exchange between the two domains. The conference will act as a springboard to understanding how Buddhism can contribute to regulating armed conflict, and what it offers in terms of guidance on the conduct of, and behavior during, war for Buddhist monks and lay persons – the latter including government and military personnel, non-State armed groups and civilians. The conference is concerned with the conduct of armed conflict, and not with the reasons and justifications for it, which fall outside the remit of IHL. In addition to exploring correspondences between IHL and Buddhist ethics, the conference will also explore how Buddhist combatants and communities understand IHL, and where it might align with Buddhist doctrines and practices: similarly, how their experience of armed conflict might be drawn upon to better promote IHL and Buddhist principles, thereby improving conduct of hostilities on the ground.
