(AP/Khin Maung Win) Published September 20, 2011 Away from the probing surveillance of Special Branch intelligence agents, a Burmese editor ticks off the recent stories the Press Scrutiny and Registration Department, Burma’s powerful state censorship body, would not allow him to publish. The banned topics were wide-ranging: volatility in fuel prices; recent land purchases by Chinese investors around the city of Mandalay; a shortage of fresh water near a southern coast development. After his paper published a seemingly innocuous story about the falling price of SIM cards—without the censors’ approval—authorities reacted swiftly in suspending the publication for two weeks. “We are pushing the limits as much as we can,” said the editor during a recent trip to Bangkok. As a small sign of success, he pointed to the publication of a recent series on the struggles of farmers facing high debts. But the censorship process remains arbitrary, intensive, and highly restrictive. “It’s like fighting with a spear while on horseback to get news published. … We must prepare many extra stories each week to fill the spaces for stories that will inevitably be cut,” said the editor, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of government reprisal. -

I spoke it out loud without shame because In such an encounter, Speaking our name, When I want to renounce it for Him, Is like speaking the name of God.1 Most female monastic rules include a description of a ceremony for taking the veil: "Receiving the Habit," "Offering the Habit," "Ceremony for Veiling and Profession" – the variety of descriptions emphasizes the solemnity of a celebration in which postulants enter into a new estate. This essay analyzes both the symbolic and material aspects of this moment in which identity is transformed. Taking the veil is a rite of passage whose every aspect, including both gesture and speech, has been carefully formalized. This essay focuses first on the ceremony's script, in which clothing draws together the postulant, her family and friends, and the monastic community that welcomes her. I then turn to an analysis of the transformation of the novice's identity, examining both how the performance of the ordinary acts of monastic life 1 Angélique de Saint Jean Arnaud d'Andilly, Aux Portes des ténèbres. The unprecedented situation created by the coronavirus crisis has touched all of our lives. But Holy Mother Church will always remain close to her children despite the closing of the churches. The lenten liturgy reminds us all to keep our eyes on the eternal goal. Just like a true mother, when anxiety is at its height, she provides us with beautiful thoughts to meditate on… this was the case on Laetare Sunday 2020, when Julia O’Leary was accepted as a Novice of the Sisters, Slaves of the Im- Left: Sister Pia- Marie cuts the cake in celebration as Sister Katherine Maria, Sister Superior, and Sister Christopher Margaret, Prioress stand by. Julia O’Leary receives the habit of a novice and her new name of Sister Pia-Marie! maculate Heart of Mary. Laetare! Rejoice! Even though all public Masses were cancelled, the MICM religious and the O’Leary family gathered in the small convent chapel, called “Gate of Heaven,” to witness this young woman ask for the habit of a novice. What a beautiful contrast to the worries of the world! Julia O’Leary, the third of Christa & Denis O’Leary’s five children, was raised in Texas. She and her sisters became acquainted with the Sisters through the Morn- ing Star Camp program, and travelled to attend for many years. -

CI-18/COUNCIL-31/6/REV 2 2018 DG Report on the Safety of Journalists and the Danger of Impunity INTRODUCTION This report is submitted to the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) in line with the Decision on the Safety of Journalists and the issue of Impunity adopted by the Council at its 26th session on 27 March 2008, and renewed at subsequent sessions in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. In its latest Decision, adopted in November 2016, the IPDC Council urged Member States to “continue to inform the Director-General of UNESCO, on a voluntary basis, on the status of the judicial inquiries conducted on each of the killings condemned by the Director-General”. The present report provides an analysis of the cases of killings of journalists and associated media personnel that were condemned by the Director-General in 2016 and 2017. It also takes stock of the status of judicial enquiries conducted on each of the killings recorded by UNESCO between 2006 and 2017, based on information provided by Member States. Humanistic Elements in Early Buddhism and the "Theravada Tradition" By Ananda W. P. Guruge ABSTRACT The paper begins with an examination of the different defuritions of humanism. Humanism primarily consistsof a concern with interests andideals of human beings, a way of peefection of human personality, a philosophical attitude which places the human and human val.Mes above all others, and a pragmatic system (e.g. that of F. C. S. Schiller and William James) whichdiscounts abstract theorizing and concentrates on the knowable and the doable. EarlyBuddhism, by whichis meant the teachingsof the Buddha as found in the PallCanon and the AgamaSutras, isdistinguished from other tradifions. The paperclarifies the error of equating Early Buddhism with the so-called Theravada Tradition of South and SoutheastAsia. Historically, the independent Theravada Tradifion with whatever specificity it had in doctrines came to an end when the three Buddhist schools (Mahavihara, Abhayagiri andJetavana) of SriLanka were unifiedin the twelfth century. What developed since then and spread to South andSoutheast Asia is an amalgam of allBuddhist traditions with the Pall Canon andits commentaries as the scriptures. With the reform measures in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, the kind of modern Buddhism prevalent as "Theravada" is flexible, tolerant and reinforced by modernizing influence of Western Christian values. The paper analyses references to the Buddha's own autobiographical statements and other data in the Pali Canon and Commentaries and shows that the Buddha stood as a man before human beings to demonstrate how they could develop themselves by their own effort and reach the end of suffering. This final goal of peefedion is within the reach of every human being. -

Amnesty.org feature Eighteen years of persecution in Myanmar AI Index: ASA 16/034/2007 Date: 23 October 2007 On 24 October 2007, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will have spent 12 of the last 18 years under detention. She may be the best known of Myanmar’s prisoners of conscience, but she is far from the only one. Amnesty International believes that, even before the recent violent crackdown on peaceful protesters, there were more than 1,150 political prisoners in the country. Prisoners of conscience among these include senior political representatives of the ethnic minorities as well as members of the NLD and student activist groups. To mark the 18th year of Aung San Suu Kyi's persecution by the Myanmar, Amnesty International seeks to draw the world's attention to four people who symbolise all those in detention and suffering persecution in Myanmar. These include Aung San Suu Kyi herself; U Win Tin, Myanmar's longest-serving prisoner of conscience; U Khun Htun Oo, who is serving a 93 year sentence; and Zaw Htet Ko Ko, who was arrested after participating in the recent demonstrations in the country. Read more about these four people: Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s party won the general elections in Myanmar in 1990. But, instead of taking her position as national leader, she was kept under house arrest by the military authorities and remains so today. At 62, Aung San Suu Kyi is the General Secretary and a co-founder of Myanmar’s main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD). -

Premasiri (University of Peradeniya, Emeritus), Asanga Tilakaratne (University of Colombo, Emeritus), Stefania Travagnin (University of Groningen). Dhammapada v.103 AIMS AND RATIONALE OF THE CONFERENCE This conference, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with a number of universities and organizations, will explore correspondences between Buddhism and IHL and encourage a constructive dialogue and exchange between the two domains. The conference will act as a springboard to understanding how Buddhism can contribute to regulating armed conflict, and what it offers in terms of guidance on the conduct of, and behavior during, war for Buddhist monks and lay persons – the latter including government and military personnel, non-State armed groups and civilians. The conference is concerned with the conduct of armed conflict, and not with the reasons and justifications for it, which fall outside the remit of IHL. In addition to exploring correspondences between IHL and Buddhist ethics, the conference will also explore how Buddhist combatants and communities understand IHL, and where it might align with Buddhist doctrines and practices: similarly, how their experience of armed conflict might be drawn upon to better promote IHL and Buddhist principles, thereby improving conduct of hostilities on the ground.
