Finally, to my husband Tom - not only for his proof reading skills and putting in many child- care hours whilst I worked on my PhD - but for his unshakable belief that I could do it, even when I wasn’t sure myself. 4 This thesis is dedicated to the participants in this study who kindly gave me so much of their time and attention and who were a constant source of inspiration. 5 Abstract Although a number of scholars have investigated the ways in which Buddhism has adapted to the British cultural environment, the experiences of ordained women have been afforded comparatively little academic attention. Although Buddhism in the West is typically perceived as more conducive of lay practice, the numbers of ordained women are growing (particularly within certain Buddhist groups in Britain). However, some Buddhist traditions have been embroiled in heated controversies in relation to female ordination and gender inequality which has had a significant impact on particular communities of ordained women. Research into these experiences uncovers a great deal about the manner in which Buddhism continues to develop in Britain, and a cross-tradition inquiry into the perspectives of ordained women themselves is over-due. Using ethnographic research methods, this study centres on the narratives of twenty-four ordained (and one formerly ordained) Buddhist women, drawn from seven Buddhist groups in Britain (Forest Sangha/Theravāda; Tibetan Karma Kagyu, Gelug, and Nyingma; Triratna; the Serene Reflection Meditation Tradition/Order of Buddhist Contemplatives; and Amida Trust). The thesis is driven by three over- arching research concerns: women’s motivations for ordination, their attitudes to feminism and gender equality, and the role of the British location in shaping their experiences. Whilst there is a marked level of plurality in the attitudes and lifestyles of the participants in this study, challenging any attempt at simplistic representation, overall they demonstrate a strong dedication to putting Buddhist teachings and discipline into practice. Yet, ordination is understood not only as an opportunity to further individual spiritual aspirations but also as chance to belong and contribute to the development of Buddhist communities in Britain. It falls on the full moon day of the month of Visakha or Vesak, the sixth lunar month, (which usually falls during the period May in the Gregorian calendar). Significance According to the Theravada tradition, the three most important events in the life of the Buddha – his birth, his achievement of enlightenment and his entry into of parinibbana – all occurred on the full moon day of Visakha. Aspects of the Dharma relating to the birth, enlightenment and parinibbana of the Buddha include gratitude, the Four Noble Truths and mindfulness. Historical Life of the Buddha The Buddha was born in Lumbini Park, between the cities Kapilavastu and Devadaha of the Sakya Kingdom, in present – day Nepal, on the morning of Friday, the fifteenth waxing day of the sixth lunar month, 623 BCE, 80 years before the beginning of the Buddhist Era. He exchanged the household life for that of an ascetic and after much strenuous effort attained full enlightenment at Uruvela in the kingdom of Magadha, present – day Bodhgaya, India, on the morning of Wednesday, the fifteenth waxing day of the sixth lunar month, 45 years before beginning of the Buddhist Era. After his enlightenment, he taught those who were able to receive his teaching and countless men and women achieved enlightenment. The Buddha achieved parinibbana, that is, he passed from this world, at the age of 80 on Tuesday, the fifteenth waxing day of the sixth lunar month in the Sala Park of the Malla near the town of Kusinara in the Malla Kingdom, present day Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, India.

    The Decline of Buddhism in India It is almost impossible to provide a continuous account of the near disappearance of Buddhism from the plains of India. This is primarily so because of the dearth of archaeological material and the stunning silence of the indigenous literature on this subject. Interestingly, the subject itself has remained one of the most neglected topics in the history of India. In this book apart from the history of the decline of Buddhism in India, various issues relating to this decline have been critically examined. Following this methodology, an attempt has been made at a region-wise survey of the decline in Sind, Kashmir, northwestern India, central India, the Deccan, western India, Bengal, Orissa, and Assam, followed by a detailed analysis of the different hypotheses that propose to explain this decline.     Buddhist Meditation Centre 2018 As our archive photos in this programme show, Vajraloka has come a long way. For over three decades now, Vajraloka’s team and guest retreat leaders have been contributing to Triratna’s developing lineage of meditation teaching – in particular, offering a practical, hands-on vision of ‘what’s next’ for experienced meditators. This vision goes deeply into all areas of Triratna’s system of meditation and supports all areas of Dharma practice. Yet, Vajraloka wasn’t set up to offer meditation teaching. For the first half decade or so, the resident team at Vajraloka followed a daily programme of meditation and work which others would simply join in for a week or more. The team were also exploring their own meditation deeply, and studying traditional meditation texts such as Dhyana for Beginners by Chih-I, together with Sangharakshita’s commentaries and seminars. Before long, it became clear to the resident team that practical input could greatly benefit retreatants’ practice. So the centre morphed into offering themed retreats on the main areas of meditation practice in Triratna. The current team owe a huge amount to those who went before, both for developing that lineage of helpful meditation teaching and for converting the dilapidated farm buildings into a well-appointed retreat centre. The improvement of our facilities continues – there are new projects in the pipeline for the foreseeable future, which we hope you’ll like and support. But above all, we continue to explore and offer what genuinely helps people consolidate and take their practice deeper. We have found that deepening of body awareness enhances all our practices – mindfulness, metta and just sitting included – providing a strong, positive basis for insight (spiritual death) – inquiring into ‘how things really are’.
