Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

Schon mit 5 Jahren konnte Guy Klavierspielen und komponierte seine ersten eigenen Stücke im Alter von 11. „Ich hatte einen großartigen Musiklehrer, dem auffiel, wie gerne ich improvisierte. Also spielte er mir Duke Ellington und Dave Brubeck vor.“ Mit 13 erlernte er außerdem noch das Gitarrenspiel und verdiente schon wenig später Geld in Coverbands sowie an den Wochenenden als Pianist in diversen Pubs und Clubs. Er schrieb sich an der Guildhall School Of Music ein und avancierte zum aller ersten festangestellten Pianisten im Groucho Club. Das Klavier war Guys erste wirkliche Liebe. „Das Klavier ist der König unter den Instrumenten. In Orchestern findet man es oft in der Percussion-Sektion, weil es sehr aggressiv sein kann. Jemand wie Little Richard zum Beispiel hat es als Teil der Rhythmussektion benutzt. Aber es verfügt auch über eine unglaublich poetische Seite. In melodischer und harmonischer Hinsicht bietet es alle Möglichkeiten. Dieses Instrument verfügt über so viele Klangfarben, dass es niemals langweilig wird.“ Guy Chambers verstärkte Julian Cope, Jimmy Nail und The Waterboys als Keyboarder auf Tour, bevor er 1986 Mitglied in Karl Wallingers World Party wurde.

    Im Folgenden wird Robbie Williams (und Guy Chambers) 5-minütiger (4min wären es im Radio-Edit) Popsong „Something Beautiful“, dem 3. Song des Albums „Escapology“ von 2002 analysiert. Formanalyse nach Ulrich Kaiser Nach dem Intro folgt zweimal Verse (bzw. Strophe), Pre-Chorus, Chorus (bzw. Refrain). Danach kommt die Bridge. Diese wird nach Db moduliert. Es folgt der Pre-Chorus in E und der Chorus in der Ausgangstonart Bb. Es handelt sich also um die Liedform Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Form. Das Intro ist ein am Anfang stehender, einmaliger Musikabschnitt. Eine Strophe ist dabei ein thematisch unverändert wiederkehrender, inhaltlich umfangreicher Textabschnitt. Die Verse ist ein harmonisch unverändert wiederkehrender Musikabschnitt ohne Modulation. Ein PreChorus ist ein zum Vers harmonisch kontrastierender, zum Chorus harmonisch vorbereitender spannungssteigender, wiederkehrender Musikabschnitt. Der Chorus ist harmonisch nicht viel gemäßigter: T-Dp-S-T gefolgt von T-DS-T, dann D-DD-D-T und Dp-dd-T- SS und wieder T-D-S-T bevor es mit den Akkorden F-G-A endet. Das F lässt sich als Tonikavariante Am mit hochalterierten Quintbass #5 deuten. Das #5 (F) geht dann zum Grundton von G über.
