Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

It has endured in the face of the changing times, without itself changing much, isolated off in its own world.     Kauffman Center adds two more concerts KAUFFMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS ANNOUNCES TWO NEW CONCERTS **Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs perform June 17** **Mary Chapin Carpenter and special guest Sarah Jarosz perform July 26** Kansas City, MO – Today, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts announced two new concerts in the Kauffman Center Presents series. Classic rock standouts Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs will perform in Muriel Kauffman Theatre on Saturday, June 17. Both musicians made their names as members of legendary rock groups and have since enjoyed successful solo careers. McDonald sang with Steely Dan and was a member of The Doobie Brothers. Scaggs spent time as lead singer for the Steve Miller Band. Tickets for the event range from $59 to $139, and go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Friday, March 24. Folk and country singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter will be joined by special guest Sarah Jarosz on Wednesday, July 26 in Muriel Kauffman Theatre. Carpenter is a five-time GRAMMY Award-winner and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee. Jarosz took home this year’s GRAMMY awards for Best American Roots Performance and Best Folk Album.     Genesis: Get ‘Em Out By Friday The Official Release Dates 1968-78 Introduction Depending on where one looks for the information, the original release dates of Genesis singles and albums are often misreported. This article uses several sources, including music paper cuttings, websites and books, to try and determine the most likely release date in the UK for their officially released product issued between 1968 and 1978. For a detailed analysis to be completed beyond 1978 will require the input of others that know that era far better than I with the resources to examine it in appropriate levels of detail. My own collection of source material essentially runs dry after 1978. As most people searching for release dates are likely to go to Wikipedia that is where this search for the truth behind Genesis’ back catalogie. The dates claimed on Wikipedia would themselves have come from a number of sources referenced by contributors over the years but what these references lack is the evidence to back up their claims. This article aims to either confirm or disprove these dates with the added bonus of citing where this information stems from. It’s not without a fair share of assumptions and educated deductions but it offers more on this subject than any previously published piece.
