“My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (guest post)* The Temptations, c. 1964 The Temptations’ 1964 recording of “My Girl” came at a critical confluence for the group, the Motown label, and a culture roiling with the first waves of the British invasion of popular music. The five-man cell of disparate souls, later to be codified by black disc jockeys as the “tall, tan, talented, titillating, tempting Temptations,” had been knocking around Motown’s corridors and studio for three years, cutting six failed singles before finally scoring on the charts that year with Smokey Robinson’s cleverly spunky “The Way You Do the Things You Do” that winter. It rose to number 11 on the pop chart and to the top of the R&B chart, an important marker on the music landscape altered by the Beatles’ conquest of America that year. Having Smokey to guide them was incalculably advantageous. Berry Gordy, the former street hustler who had founded Motown as a conduit for Detroit’s inner-city voices in 1959, invested a lot of trust in the baby-faced Robinson, who as front man of the Miracles delivered the company’s seminal number one R&B hit and million-selling single, “Shop Around.” Four years later, in 1964, he wrote and produced Mary Wells’ “My Guy,” Motown’s second number one pop hit. Gordy conquered the black urban market but craved the broader white pop audience. The Temptations were riders on that train. Formed in 1959 by Otis Williams, a leather-jacketed street singer, their original lineup consisted of Williams, Elbridge “Al” Bryant, bass singer Melvin Franklin and tenors Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. -

Music article From a homeless street musician in Nashville to a top-selling artist in Sweden - The remarkable story of Doug Seegers (by J. Granstrom) In the previous newsletter, we covered Jill Johnson’s highly celebrated TV show “Jills veranda (Jill’s Porch)”, where she invites Swedish artists to visit her in Nashville to make music and learn more Seegers with Johnson at the Swedish about different aspects about life in the American TV show “Allsång på Skansen” Deep South. In one of the most popular episodes during the first season of the show in 2014, Johnson and her guest Magnus Carlson - singer of the popular Swedish band “Weeping Willows” which has collaborated with Oasis member Andy Bell on several occasions - met the 62-year old homeless street musician Doug Seegers who was performing on a park bench in Nashville. A street vendor recommended Johnson and Carlson to check out Seegers, and both were immediately impressed by Seeger’s voice. He tells them that he “lives in a place where he doesn’t have to pay rent - under a bridge”, and then brings them out to a church where homeless people are Seegers with Johnson on offered free food and clothes. During the visit, Seegers plays the cover of their joint his own song ”Going Down To The River”, which impressed album “In Tandem” Johnson and Carlson so much that they returned some time later and offered to record the song with Seegers in Johnny Cash’s old studio in Nashville. Seegers became an overnight sensation in Sweden after the episode was broadcast, and “Going Down To The River” was number 1 on the Swedish iTunes charts for 12 consecutive days. -

Summer festival Performances Programme 2015 Welcome Welcome to our inaugural Summer Festival in which the final week of the academic year will see a celebration of School life that spans art, music, drama, sport and scholarship. The Festival provides an opportunity to celebrate the talents and abilities within our School community and to showcase the achievements of our pupils. For those in their final term, I hope this will enable them to enjoy their last few days at School in the best possible way, providing a fitting way to bid farewell to what I hope have been some very special years at Dauntsey’s. There will be over 30 events, ranging from jazz to classical music, dance to plays and lectures to recitals, all in ten locations on the school site. The centrepiece of the week will be Matthew Bourne’s dance show, ‘Lord of the Flies’, featuring an all- boy cast. Parents, friends and visitors are all most welcome and, I have no doubt, there will be something for everyone.
