Comments I was stationed on the Guardian 1959-1960 (1 year 10 months) So many hours at sea was no fun at all. Assigned to the deck crew. Loved it when we caught that northern station and we had to chip ice off the decks with a fire ax and get some red lead on the deck before it froze back over. Ahh! all those good times....

You have done a fine job on it To update, I was assigned to Searcher as CIC Officer from 7-11/56;, relieving LT jg Bruder, Cross decked to USS Wyandot(AKA 92) at Davisville to fill requirement for Air Controller and CIC/Electronics O. for Operations DeepFreeze II&III in Antarctica. Taught at Annapolis after that, and then went to tin cans, and commanded Coastal and Riverine Forces in Vietnam. Retired in 82. Surprised to see omission of LCDR Arthur J Meyers USN, as CO 7/56-1/57 on the officers list !! He took ship out of yard after the fire, until retired on a medical in '57

Comments Although the ship did not have a billet for Journalist, I was the first one to establish the rate aboard any of the AGR's. I edited and published the Saturday Night Outpost, a flyer type of weekly newsletter documenting shipboard activities. It was very primitive with photos cut and pasted from mimeograph services of The Navy Times. Still, the crew looked forward to it every weekend while at sea. After I was allowed to strike for the rate, another sailor, Frank Kulik of Salem, MA became a JOSN. We both served aboard The Outpost from 1962 to 1964.

Comments Every once in a while I think about someone who was a friend on the Big "I". Not sure exactly what prompted me to search for the 14, but I did. Served as EM3 from late 1962- mid 1965 (Left immediately prior to her last cruise to go to college). I just stumbled on the site by surfing. It’s really great to see so much information a reunion activities for past crew members. I served as a crew member from 1962-1965. Released just before the Big "I" left for the decommissioning trip - early out to return to college. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who was on board during my time frame. I know I have some old documentation and stuff somewhere that might be of interest to others. I'll take a look around and see what I have.

Comments Great job Frank in putting this site together and in keeping it up and running. I was on the Searcher 1959-60 when we lost the use of the screw while in the North Atlantic just before Christmas of 1959. I was a Disbursing Clerk 3C and had a small part in keeping the crew happy by paying them twice a month. The best thing from my duty on the Searcher is the establishment of the YAGR's Association leading me to meeting new friends who truly are friends and shipmates.

Comments Great web site. One of my fondest memories was tieing my fishing pole to the fantail rail (along with several others) to troll for albacore tuna. If you snagged one, the after lookout would notify the bridge, the bridge would pass the word for you over the 1MC, the OOD would then stop the ship until the fish was brought aboard, then continue on. We beat all the other AGR's on one trip by boating 431. We stuffed the largest to hang in the mess deck. Everyone on board ate pretty back home for a while. I was an SK1 in 1964-65.

Comments My goodness. I just happened on this site. To think that the YAGRs have not been forgotten. Probably should have been. Remarkable. They waited until I left to decommission her. The pictures bring back memories. I was on Searcher from May'63 to Jan.'65, made EM3 before I left. I remember when we lost our screw that fateful picket after we made asses out of ourselves trying to rescue the survivors of that Liberian Freighter that broke in half. Our motor whaleboat krapped out and we almost lost those people. Did lose the whaleboat. Then we lost the screw. Those two happenings are related, I suspect. As we drifted, screwless, a storm came up and I was sure that we would sink and I was going to die. I was wrong, but I have never been so frightned before or sence. Ah, memories. I served on the staff from 1955 til my separation in 1957. I was in newport when a crew of sailors was lost during a bad snow storm and they were found several days later frozen. During my time in the Division there was a fire aboard the USS Searcher (I believe) and there was a death. The finest man I worked for was Byron Bount who was yeoman 1st class and later was advanced to an officer's ranking.

Comments Harry & Frank...... Just wanted to take this opportunity to inform you both, that today I had the pleasure and honor of meeting one of your own sailors. He goes by the name of Jim Ebersole and was aboard the LOOKOUT. We had the pleasure to chat about NAVY times and I learned a great deal about the Liberty ships that my father-in-law once sailed aboard. I've found your website to be most interesting (and will continue to come back to it from time-to-time). As a Navy Vietnam Veteran (3/tours - 1966-1968) and the Ship & Website historian for the USS Bennington (CV/CVA/CVS-20) Association, I wanted to say "thank you for your service to country and for the continued service you provide to all those who sailed aboard "Radar Picket Ships". I salute you gentlemen for your efforts in "Keeping the Pickets, Past - Present". BRAVO ZULU...... Fraternally yours, Joseph L. Pires USS Bennington Historian "Non Sibi Sed Patriae"

I slept overnight, enjoyed meals onboard, and watched movies in the theatre which I believe was in the bow. I use to fish off the pier at Treasure Island where the Locator was tied up. I lived at Hunters Point Naval Ship Yard for about two Years before moving to San Diego. First ship after joining Navy. Good times and bad. Can't remember Commo but him and I just could NOT get along. Retired after 28 years as RMCS. Looking back, enjoyed the tour lots more than not. Old Navy then, locker clubs, partying at the Pirates Den in Providence, even spent the night in the grass under the East Grenwich Police station sign. Cops woke me up in the morning and took me back to the ship (nicely). Currently live in Rio de Janeiro Brazil and come to Jacksonville where my wife and I maintain a condo for her shopping visits! Have not been to a reunion but would like to go to one.

I was just surfing the net and stumbled onto your web site. I'm very glad to see that some are keeping the history of the Radar Picket Ships alive and well. I'm sure that it takes a lot of work and many long hours. You've done a outstanding job, congratulations! The Watchman was my first ship assignment. I was just an 18 year old seaman duce right out of boot camp and Radar "A" school, Treasure Island, San Francisco. After working in the deck force for a month or two, I got to work with OPS CIC radar watches for a couple of weeks. Then, I was sent to the galley to be a mess cook for a couple more months. One of my fondest memories as a mess cook was taking a full garbage can up the ladder and to the stern to dump it overboard. We were on station 1 then and riding out a pretty rough sea. Just as I lifted the can the ship's stern pitched down to the sea level and water flooded the stern, knocking me down and soaking me from head to toe. The garbage can was lost overboard and I was grabbing anything I could get my hands on. The aft man overboard watch ran over to see if I was still on board, he saw that I had managed to stay on board and was okay. Then, he just started laughing his ass off. I went back down below decks and had to explain to the chief cook what had happened and that we needed a new garbage can. He just started laughing his ass off as well. After that, I got the nickname "water boy". After my mess cook days, I was permanently assigned to OPS CIC and stood many watches with a great bunch of guys. After 40+ years some names have faded from my memory but, I remember Rodd RD1, Baines RD2, Espinoza RD3, May RD3, and Poston SN. By the time the ship was decommissioned I was an RD3 myself. Finding this web site has brought back many memories. I would love to hear from any of my old shipmates. If any of you have old pictures or video conversions from those times I would love to get copies from you. Unfortunately I don't have any picture of the USS Watchman and crew to share. I have been busy copying all the internet web picture that I can find.

359. Name: Jim Weekley eMail: j [email protected] My Location: Simpsonville, SC My Ship: USS Lookout YAGR-2 Date: Dec. 23, 2010 Comments:

I have just posted that I would like to attend the next reunion in Nashville but thought that I would also like to post this. I came to Charleston in January 55 right out of radar school in Norfolk to be at the commissioning of the ship. I was a SA and helped inventory all of the parts and pieces for the ship stores. That even included the eating utensils. When we were ready for sea, I was assigned the port lookout for the sea and anchor detail. We were to take on ammunition. The captain told the pilot that the ship was slow to answer the helm but the pilot didn't take into consideration the outgoing tide. We hit the end of the ammunition pier and had to stay in port till repairs were made to our bow. There was a light tower on the end of the pier. When we hit, two men that were standing there, they were off the pier before the tower hit the ground. I held that port lookout position until one trip into port when we rounded the island going to Davisville and I reported a red light off the port beam 325 yards, 2 feet and 6 inches. After that I was relocated to the CIC as a radar operator giving David "Tex" Ritter bearings and ranges. I finally got to go inside where it was warm. I left the ship in August of 57. There are some other stories but we will not talk about them right now. You are doing a great job on the web page. Thank you.

Ship (Aug 7) and I (Aug. 19) were "decommissioned just a couple weeks apart. Spent last couple of months TAD to Hunter's cataloging and stowing loose materiel from ships being decommissioned. My first picket (Nov.'65) was fun as we hit heavy weather on the way to our station (20-25ft seas) with ship rolling as much as 34 degrees out of perp. Will never forget the all-day cruise up the Colombia River to Portland,OR at the end of a later picket.

Went aboard the USS Lookout directly out of school as an RMSN July 1961. RM2 Rick, can't remember his last name got me started, I caught up with her in Key West, Florida. I had some great times and, well, may some that weren't. Overall I enjoyed my picket tour. I left the YAGR fleet in 1963 as an RM3 for school. I am presently retired from the Navy as an RMC(SS), retired from Siemens Communications, and of course drawing my social security.

I remember RM2 Rick ????, RM1 Echo, RM2 Missing and RM3 Curley. Curley and I attended RM"A" school together. He came aboard just before I left.

Maybe an exchange of memories consisting of shipboard happenings, liberties, etc. could promote more activity.

365. Name: Bob Robinson eMail: [email protected] My Location: Wenatchee, WA My Ship: NONE Date: March 8, 2011 Comments: I'm trying to find out about weather observations that were taken aboard the Picket ships stationed along the US west coast. I know surface weather obs were taken, because tremendous falling pressure at one of the ships was the first indicator of the massive Columbus day storm of 1962. Were there also upper air soundings made? This would have been balloon-carried electronic instruments (radiosondes). During 1964, while working at Stanford Research Institute, I retrieved film from cameras mounted on radar scopes on several of the ships when they docked at Treasure Island, for the purpose of atmospheric investigations.

446 Name: Ken Bonacci eMail: [email protected] My Location: Salem, Ma. 01970 My Ship: Searcher AGR-4 Date: March 29, 2013 Comments: Served 33 months, 61-64. Is there aanyone who recalls losing our screw at sea and all that followed. There is a story I think should be told. I was the BMOW at the time. and watched it head out to sea on its own voyage. You would not think it possible for a 10,000T ship to shake so violently, that everything not in a fixed position, took flight. Or how about the storm in the North Atlantic, with a sea state 10, winds 100MPH. The inclometer took a full tilt. I couldn't get the wing watches brought onto the bridge, but rather had to lash them down at the gyro repeaters. Thinking these thoughts tempers the fantasy of "my old Navy days." Let's hear from you. Peace

Ken
