Scotland’s Hogmanay Live will be presented live from Edinburgh’s Princes Street by Jackie Bird and the show will also bring the excitement from other big celebrations marking the year end. It’s part of a tasty mix of programming on BBC One Scotland New Year’s Eve that includes a two-part comedy panel show, inspired by the 60thanniversary of television in Scotland. Hosted by Fred MacAulay and featuring Ronni Ancona, Alex Norton, Sanjeev Kholi, Neil Oliver, Susan Calman and Mark Nelson, Scots on the Box takes a sideways look at some of the memorable moments and names from the goggle box over the last six decades. In Just Dandy Ford Kiernan celebrates the anarchic humour of the Scottish comic that has kept children of all ages entertained. As the classic publication reaches the end of its run, Ford meets the artists and writers as well as fans including comedian Frank Skinner. Also on Hogmanay, Jonathan Watson and the team take a satirical look at the national sport and beyond in Only An Excuse? at the end of an eventful twelve months on and off the football pitch. Scotland’s Hogmanay Live follows with Jackie Bird back on screen, making her return to the airwaves after recovering from illness. Jackie said: “It’ll be great to be out with the party-goers enjoying one of the biggest parties in the world. Not only that, but we’re hoping to get around Scotland bringing the spirit of the night into everyone’s living room.” From Edinburgh the show will also go live to Stirling Castle, where the Proclaimers will be in concert, to Inverness, for a Highland-style Hogmanay and to BBC Scotland’s studio in Glasgow with Frightened Rabbit, Rachel Sermanni, Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain. The programme will be at the heart of the ‘midnight moment’ which sees out the old year with a Lone Piper on the battlements of Edinburgh Castle and brings in the New Year with the firing of the gun and the start of the spectacular fireworks display. Elsewhere on the festive television schedule, there are two episodes of a new series of Watching Ourselves which looks at the history of television in Scotland. The first revisits the heyday of the Scottish historical drama, awash with swordfights, skullduggery and dodgy wigs. Iain Glen, Brian Cox, Michael Gambon and Billy Connolly are among the contributors. The second programme looks at Christmas and Hogmanay highlights, from the BBC’s White Heather Club with Andy Stewart to the disco dancing specials of STV. In River City Molly (Una Maclean) gives Liz (Eileen McCallum) some Christmas spirit but for Christina (Caitlin Gillespie)the festivities are forgotten as she discovers the truth about her cyber bully. There’s also a two part Adventure Show special on The Scottish National Trail. The walk has been devised by Scotland’s best known walker, Cameron McNeish, and in two one hour programmes, he shares his passion and enthusiasm for what he describes as one of the great long distance walks of the world. On BBC Radio Scotland, there’s a wide range of content including inspiring music, revealing interviews and engaging documentaries to keep listeners tuned in during the festivities. There’s a Stark Talk Christmas Day special when Edi Stark interviews golden Olympian, Catherine Grainger. In the afternoon Christmas Classics brings an array of festive musical classics from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Jamie MacDougall on the stage of the Music Hall, Aberdeen. On Hogmanay,Tutti Frutti 25 Years On looks back at the iconic television show with some of the leading figures, including John Byrne, Katy Murphy and Richard Wilson. And later, Bryan Burnett and Janice Forsyth are live from BBC Scotland’s studios in Glasgow with music to help the audience party into 2013 in style on the Hogmanay Show. Cèilidh Na Bliadhn’ Ùire 2012, BBC ALBA’s Hogmanay Ceilidh 2012, comes live from Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, by Beauly, with a whole host of great musicians including Mànran and Kathleen MacInnes. The programme also links up with the Red Hot Highland fling, Inverness city centre’s Hogmanay celebrations, for the midnight fireworks display. Presented by Kirsteen Macdonald and Derek Murray, the show will also be simulcast on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal. Donalda MacKinnon, Head of Programmes and Services, said: “There’s a great variety of programming to keep our viewers and listeners entertained throughout the holiday season. Audiences come to BBC Scotland in big numbers on Hogmanay and our line-up this year will provide plenty of laughs, nostalgia and uplifting music to provide extra fizz to the party atmosphere across the country.” Further information: Jim Gough SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 52 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Scottish Premier League - Celtic v Ross County Saturday 22 December BBC ALBA, 5.30 – 7.30pm As live action from the Scottish Premier League as Celtic host Ross County at Celtic Park, Glasgow. • 1 Update Report on the Winning Years Prepared for the Scottish
Update Report on The Winning Years Prepared for the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee 9 September 2013 INTRODUCTION This report updates the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee on the activity and results from The Winning Years; eight milestones over three years which VisitScotland and partners have been promoting to, and working with, the tourism industry on. The overall ambition behind the development of the Winning Years concept is to ensure that the tourism industry and wider visitor economy is set to take full advantage of the long-term gains over the course of the next few years. The paper is divided into sections covering each of the milestones: Year of Creative Scotland The 2012 London Olympics The Diamond Jubilee Disney.Pixar’s Brave Year of Natural Scotland The Commonwealth Games The 2014 Ryder Cup Homecoming Scotland 2014 (incl. up to date list of events) From this report Committee members will see that excellent progress has been made, with strong interest in Scotland’s tourism product from around the world as the country builds to welcome the world in 2014. All of this despite the continuing global economic difficulties. Evidence of bucking the global trend and the success of the 2012 Winning Years milestones can be seen in VisitScotland’s announcement at the end of August that its two main marketing campaigns brought nearly £310m additional economic benefit for Scotland since January 2012. This is a rise of 14% on the same period the year before. VisitScotland’s international campaigns target Scotland’s main markets across the globe including North America, Germany and France as well as emerging markets, such as India and China.

  • Deliberative Audience Research for the Public Interest Test Into the Proposed Introduction of a New BBC Scotland TV Channel
Deliberative audience research for the Public Interest Test into the proposed introduction of a new BBC Scotland TV channel Report of findings from PAPA July 2017 Objectives, Sample & Methodology 2 Context & Objectives 1. The BBC has announced plans to launch a new channel in Scotland - running 7pm – midnight everyday 2. As part of the new regulatory structure of the BBC, this launch is subject to a Public Interest Test (PIT), overseen by the BBC Executive Board, and an Ofcom Competition Assessment 3. To meet the criteria set out in the PIT, the BBC Board must be satisfied that the new initiative supports the BBC’s restated mission; that it promotes its public purposes; that the BBC has taken reasonable steps to ensure that the change has no impact on fair and effective competition; and that the public value of the initiative justifies any impact on the competition 4. To measure the public value of the initiative a process is necessary which includes a measurement of the potential personal and citizen value which audiences in Scotland could gain from the launch of the new initiative 5. In late May 2017, PAPA conducted a deliberative qualitative study to provide indicative measures and insights of how the audience may value the proposal 6. A sample of the Scottish public, reflective of adults in Scotland, was presented with the proposal in order to: - Understand and explore the personal value they evaluate in the proposal - Understand and explore the citizen value they evaluate in the proposal - Identify other insights into competition, fulfilment of the Public Purposes or wider impacts the proposal might have on the BBC and the broader broadcasting environment 3 Overview of Methodology • A deliberative approach was used for this research in order to uncover the informed, considered views of a wide range of members of the public.

  • Tales Behind the Tunes Played by Brampton Community Band Martin
Tales Behind the Tunes played by Brampton Community Band Martin Coslett Introduction Towards the end of 2018, my first session with Brampton Community Band was nerve wracking. I had printed out the music for the list they had sent but was not expecting the onslaught of tunes and at such fast tempos! Of course, they were designed for people to dance to so had to be at specific speeds. As eventually an accepted member of the band I was fortunate to play at quite a few church halls and birthday ceilidh’s before the pandemic came to haunt us and stopped the dancing. Half an Hour with the Brampton Community Band Brampton Community Band - ‘the brainchild of Peter Gray’ - recorded a CD at Donut Studios Chesterfield in 2012 of the following tunes: 1. Morgan Rattler/Banish Misfortune 2. Napoleon Crossing the Rhine/Jimmy Garson’s March 3. Woodland Revels 4. The Swallow’s Nest/Calliope House 5. The Greenwood Tree/Northern Light 6. The Tenpenny Bit/The Blackthorn stick 7. John Ryan’s Polka/Dennis Murphy’s Polka 8. The Bishop/Jack Maggot 9. The Gentle Maiden/Road to Lisdoonvarna/O’Keefe’s Slide British music and English folk music includes a variety of important musical styles including dance music like that used in Morris dancing (see types below) as well as sea shanties and other sung genres. From early medieval days tunes were carried from place to place by minstrels who passed on the news of the day in story form (true and ‘fake’) At least one of the tunes included here can be dated back as far as 1046 - Morgan Rattler.
