Scotland’s Hogmanay Live will be presented live from Edinburgh’s Princes Street by Jackie Bird and the show will also bring the excitement from other big celebrations marking the year end. It’s part of a tasty mix of programming on BBC One Scotland New Year’s Eve that includes a two-part comedy panel show, inspired by the 60thanniversary of television in Scotland. Hosted by Fred MacAulay and featuring Ronni Ancona, Alex Norton, Sanjeev Kholi, Neil Oliver, Susan Calman and Mark Nelson, Scots on the Box takes a sideways look at some of the memorable moments and names from the goggle box over the last six decades. In Just Dandy Ford Kiernan celebrates the anarchic humour of the Scottish comic that has kept children of all ages entertained. As the classic publication reaches the end of its run, Ford meets the artists and writers as well as fans including comedian Frank Skinner. Also on Hogmanay, Jonathan Watson and the team take a satirical look at the national sport and beyond in Only An Excuse? at the end of an eventful twelve months on and off the football pitch. Scotland’s Hogmanay Live follows with Jackie Bird back on screen, making her return to the airwaves after recovering from illness. Jackie said: “It’ll be great to be out with the party-goers enjoying one of the biggest parties in the world. Not only that, but we’re hoping to get around Scotland bringing the spirit of the night into everyone’s living room.” From Edinburgh the show will also go live to Stirling Castle, where the Proclaimers will be in concert, to Inverness, for a Highland-style Hogmanay and to BBC Scotland’s studio in Glasgow with Frightened Rabbit, Rachel Sermanni, Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain. The programme will be at the heart of the ‘midnight moment’ which sees out the old year with a Lone Piper on the battlements of Edinburgh Castle and brings in the New Year with the firing of the gun and the start of the spectacular fireworks display. Elsewhere on the festive television schedule, there are two episodes of a new series of Watching Ourselves which looks at the history of television in Scotland. The first revisits the heyday of the Scottish historical drama, awash with swordfights, skullduggery and dodgy wigs. Iain Glen, Brian Cox, Michael Gambon and Billy Connolly are among the contributors. The second programme looks at Christmas and Hogmanay highlights, from the BBC’s White Heather Club with Andy Stewart to the disco dancing specials of STV. In River City Molly (Una Maclean) gives Liz (Eileen McCallum) some Christmas spirit but for Christina (Caitlin Gillespie)the festivities are forgotten as she discovers the truth about her cyber bully. There’s also a two part Adventure Show special on The Scottish National Trail. The walk has been devised by Scotland’s best known walker, Cameron McNeish, and in two one hour programmes, he shares his passion and enthusiasm for what he describes as one of the great long distance walks of the world. On BBC Radio Scotland, there’s a wide range of content including inspiring music, revealing interviews and engaging documentaries to keep listeners tuned in during the festivities. There’s a Stark Talk Christmas Day special when Edi Stark interviews golden Olympian, Catherine Grainger. In the afternoon Christmas Classics brings an array of festive musical classics from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Jamie MacDougall on the stage of the Music Hall, Aberdeen. On Hogmanay,Tutti Frutti 25 Years On looks back at the iconic television show with some of the leading figures, including John Byrne, Katy Murphy and Richard Wilson. And later, Bryan Burnett and Janice Forsyth are live from BBC Scotland’s studios in Glasgow with music to help the audience party into 2013 in style on the Hogmanay Show. Cèilidh Na Bliadhn’ Ùire 2012, BBC ALBA’s Hogmanay Ceilidh 2012, comes live from Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, by Beauly, with a whole host of great musicians including Mànran and Kathleen MacInnes. The programme also links up with the Red Hot Highland fling, Inverness city centre’s Hogmanay celebrations, for the midnight fireworks display. Presented by Kirsteen Macdonald and Derek Murray, the show will also be simulcast on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal. Donalda MacKinnon, Head of Programmes and Services, said: “There’s a great variety of programming to keep our viewers and listeners entertained throughout the holiday season. Audiences come to BBC Scotland in big numbers on Hogmanay and our line-up this year will provide plenty of laughs, nostalgia and uplifting music to provide extra fizz to the party atmosphere across the country.” Further information: Jim Gough SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 52 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Scottish Premier League - Celtic v Ross County Saturday 22 December BBC ALBA, 5.30 – 7.30pm As live action from the Scottish Premier League as Celtic host Ross County at Celtic Park, Glasgow.
