These concerts, added to the business tourism, helped to increase the attendance for the year by 15.8%. The McManus had its highest recorded visitor Broughty Castle achieved an increase in sales figures ever! Attendances followed the excellent of 67.46% for 2018/2019. Our incredibly popular family exhibition - Bash Street’s Back at the McMenace attracted 105,769 visitors over the summer and was the highest attended comic exhibition in the UK ever. We have gone from strength to strength this year with an overall increase of 22.7% to cultural venues.     Celticism, Internationalism and Scottish Identity Three Key Images in Focus Frances Fowle The Scottish Celtic Revival emerged from long-standing debates around language and the concept of a Celtic race, a notion fostered above all by the poet and critic Matthew Arnold.1 It took the form of a pan-Celtic, rather than a purely Scottish revival, whereby Scotland participated in a shared national mythology that spilled into and overlapped with Irish, Welsh, Manx, Breton and Cornish legend. Some historians portrayed the Celts – the original Scottish settlers – as pagan and feckless; others regarded them as creative and honorable, an antidote to the Industrial Revolution. ‘In a prosaic and utilitarian age,’ wrote one commentator, ‘the idealism of the Celt is an ennobling and uplifting influence both on literature and life.’2 The revival was championed in Edinburgh by the biologist, sociologist and utopian visionary Patrick Geddes (1854–1932), who, in 1895, produced the first edition of his avant-garde journal The Evergreen: a Northern Seasonal, edited by William Sharp (1855–1905) and published in four ‘seasonal’ volumes, in 1895– 86.3 The journal included translations of Breton and Irish legends and the poetry and writings of Fiona Macleod, Sharp’s Celtic alter ego. The cover was designed by Charles Hodge Mackie (1862– 1920) and it was emblazoned with a Celtic Tree of Life.     ‘THE NEO-AVANT-GARDE IN MODERN SCOTTISH ART, AND WHY IT MATTERS.’ CRAIG RICHARDSON DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (BY PUBLISHED WORK) THE SCHOOL OF FINE ART, THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART 2017 1 ‘THE NEO-AVANT-GARDE IN MODERN SCOTTISH ART, AND WHY IT MATTERS.’ Abstract. The submitted publications are concerned with the historicisation of late-modern Scottish visual art. The underpinning research draws upon archives and site visits, the development of Scottish art chronologies in extant publications and exhibitions, and builds on research which bridges academic and professional fields, including Oliver 1979, Hartley 1989, Patrizio 1999, and Lowndes 2003. However, the methodology recognises the limits of available knowledge of this period in this national field. Some of the submitted publications are centred on major works and exhibitions excised from earlier work in Gage 1977, and Macmillan 1994. This new research is discussed in a new iteration, Scottish art since 1960, and in eight other publications. The primary objective is the critical recovery of little-known artworks which were formed in Scotland or by Scottish artists and which formed a significant period in Scottish art’s development, with legacies and implications for contemporary Scottish art and artists. This further serves as an analysis of critical practices and discourses in late-modern Scottish art and culture. The central contention is that a Scottish neo-avant-garde, particularly from the 1970s, is missing from the literature of post-war Scottish art. This was due to a lack of advocacy, which continues, and a dispersal of knowledge. Therefore, while the publications share with extant publications a consideration of important themes such as landscape, it reprioritises these through a problematisation of the art object.

    The First Minister’s 2019 Christmas Card Project will benefit the following charities: Marine Conservation Society Glasgow & Clyde Rape Crisis Friends of Victoria & Whyteman’s Brae Hospitals Celebrated and named as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine, Annie Lennox’s iconic musical career spans over four decades. Her collaboration with partner Dave Stewart formed Eurythmics in the early ‘80s. Lennox has also enjoyed a widely acclaimed solo career, selling over 83 million albums worldwide altogether. In 2012, Annie Lennox was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her work towards the eradication of AIDS and poverty in Africa. She is a Royal Academician, a respected social activist and philanthropist, and the first female Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University. Her work in the visual arts has included an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; ‘The House of Annie Lennox’ which travelled to Manchester, Aberdeen; and The National Portrait Gallery of Edinburgh. Her installation ‘Now I Let You Go’… is currently exhibited at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Annie has been awarded the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s ‘Livingstone Medal’ and, in 2017, her philanthropic work was honoured with the George Harrison Global Citizen Award, and a second prestigious German Sustainability Award.     Welcome to Dundee Women’s Festival 2019 - two weeks when women use their voices to entertain, educate and enhance their own lives and those of others. We have an even bigger and more varied programme than ever before with something to appeal to all women regardless of age, interests, advantages or disadvantages. I am especially delighted that the Scottish Parliament Centenary Grant has allowed us to host a conference on the fight for women’s suffrage and what our vote means today.
