This problem is particularly acute over southern Africa, a region characterised by a low density of obser- vations and highly dependent on rural agriculture, where the impact of rainfall changes on maize cul- tivation critically depends on the timing with respect to the crop phenological cycle. To evaluate changes in rainfall affecting maize cropping, daily rainfall observations from 104 stations across Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe were used to detect trends in planting dates, rainfall cessation and duration of the rainfall season, as well as number of dry days, length of dry spells and measures of rainfall intensity during critical periods for growing maize. Correlations with the South- ern Oscillation Index (SOI) and Antarctic Oscillation (AAO) were used to infer how large-scale cli- mate variability affects these attributes of rainfall and highlight where (and when) trends may con- tribute to more frequent crossings of critical thresholds. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) was associated with changes in planting and cessation dates as well as the frequency of raindays dur- ing the rainfall season (particularly early in the season). AAO mainly affected raindays towards the end of the season when maize was planted late. Trends are discussed relative to changes projected in empirically downscaled scenarios of rainfall from 7 general circulation models for the 2046–2065 period, assuming an SRES A2 emissions scenario.     JAPAN SUPPORTS DEMINING ACTIVITIES IN MUKUMBURA, MOUNT DARWIN DISTRICT On 20th May 2015, the Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, H.E. Mr Yoshi Tendai Hiraishi attended a ceremony in Mukumbura marking the successful completion of “The Project for Mine Clearance in Mashonaland Central Province”. The project was implemented by an international NGO, the HALO Trust with funding by a Japanese grant of eight hundred and sixty-four thousand dollars (USD 864,000), which was inaugurated at a signing ceremony in March 2013. The project supported demining activities in Mukumbura, Mount Darwin District, in the north east of the country along the border with Mozambique which was heavily mined pre 1980. This project was significant in that the problem of landmines had been left unattended for so many years in spite of the fact that people had been exposed to grave danger by living beside dense minefields. The main objective of the project was to create a safer environment for local communities, their children and livestock and to return land for agricultural production through the removal of unexploded mines. A total of 982 landmines has been cleared and the area of 187,765 square meters has been released under this project which included the groundwork such as a detailed survey, training and procurement of specialised equipment. Currently, the HALO Trust continues their demining work using another Japanese grant of USD 853,607 which was disbursed in March 2014. Speaking at the occasion, H.E. Mr Hiraishi expressed his hope that he could come back to Mukumbura to see further progress in mine clearance.

Informal cattle marketing which involves door to door or gate sales has been the most predominant system for the last three decades. However, the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic followed by the imposition of lockdowns has exposed the vulnerability of rural communities which are regressing into poverty due to lack of alternative sources of income. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to delineate how formal cattle markets could be used as a sustainable source of income for rural communities’ livelihoods during and post the COVID-19 pandemic era. This qualitative research study relied on secondary data from published journal articles, online publications, and reports to understand the COVID-19 pandemic and also understand how it has impacted the livelihoods of people in rural Zimbabwe. The findings show that the current informal cattle marketing system is no longer suitable for rural communities as it exposes them to infections due to the challenges in ensuring compliance with the World Health Organisation (WHO) precautionary measures. It is recommended that formal (public) cattle markets be reintroduced in all rural areas as there is the certainty that WHO health guidelines will be enforced since they are organised by local and central government institutions.

    Borderland Entrepreneurs: The dynamics of cotton production and smuggling by farmers along the Mukumbura border post between Zimbabwe and Mozambique. By Dombo Sylvester University of KwaZulu-Natal [email protected] Abstract The Zimbabwe-Mozambique borderland, which stretches for thousands of kilometres, is one of the longest and poorly managed in the Southern Africa region. Cotton is the major crop grown along the border. As the borderland communities are full of related people, the production seasons see Mozambican farmers coming to Zimbabwe to buy planting seeds and other inputs whilst Zimbabwean farmers would cross the border in search for fertile soils. The marketing period, depending on the strength of the country’s producer prices, is marked by cotton smuggling to both sides of the border as farmers search for higher prices. This paper seeks to explore the dynamics of cotton production and marketing (smuggling) along the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border as the farmers take advantage of the porous border to obtain better rewards for their crops. It examines the role played by cotton buyers who are often willing accomplices in the smuggling of this bulky commodity. While not taking the initiative away from the farmers, this paper also looks at the role of corrupt border officials in aiding this smuggling. Though there are several routes used by farmers from both sides of the border to smuggle cotton, this paper will focus on the smuggling at the Mukumbura border post. This paper is premised on oral interviews with farmers on both sides of the border as well as various cotton buyers and border officials.
