There has been little chance of us standing still with what has been going on here in 2015. The year started well with the birth of our sixth grandchild. January into February had Sue and I in Colombia for our first winter/early spring expedition. It was exhilarating, we were able to travel much further afield than we had previously, as the mountainous areas become safer to travel. We are looking forward to working ever closer with the Colombian institutes, such as the Medellin Botanic Gardens whom we met up with. Consequently we were absent from the RHS February Show at Vincent Square. We are finding it increasingly expensive participating in the London shows, while re-branding the RHS February Show as a potato event hardly encourages our type of customer base to visit. A long standing speaking engagement and a last minute change of date, meant that we missed going to Fota near Cork last spring, no such problem this coming year. We were pleasantly surprised at the level of interest at the Trgrehan Garden Rare Plant Fair, in Cornwall. Hopefully this will become an annual event for us, as well as the Cornwall Garden Society show in April. Poor Sue went through the wars having to have a rush hysterectomy in June, after some timely results revealed future risks.

There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. The molecular analysis based on three plastid regions—the rps16 intron, the atpB- rbcL intergenic spacer, and the trnL-F region—reveal the intrafamilial classification to be in need of revision. The two tribes Iphigenieae and Uvularieae are demonstrated to be paraphyletic. The well-known genus Colchicum is shown to be nested within Androcymbium, Onixotis constitutes a grade between Neodregea and Wurmbea, and Gloriosa is intermixed with species of Littonia. Two new tribes are described, Burchardieae and Tripladenieae, and the two tribes Colchiceae and Uvularieae are emended, leaving four tribes in the family. At generic level new combinations are made in Wurmbea and Gloriosa in order to render them monophyletic. TO Mr. Brown is due the nierit of having first pointed out the chief cha- racters of this genus, and among others its binary ovula, which doubtless suggested to Salisbury the name of Disporum, subsequently given to it by that botanist in a list of Petaloid Monocotyledons, printed in the first volume of the Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London. The genus, however, remained undescribed, and almost unnoticed, until the publication of my little work on the plants of Nepal, in which I gave a detailed descrip- tion of it, and added to it two other species, namely, the Uvularia Pitsutu of Buchanan Hamilton, and the Uvularia parvifora of Wallich. Sir J. E. Smith. in an article appended to that on Uvularia, and inserted in the 30th volume of Rees’s Cyclopaedia, has referred the former plant to Michaux’s, or rather Richard‘s genus Streptopus, with the name of peduncularis. To this view of its affinities he was most probably led by the account of the fruit given by Buchanan Hamilton in his manuscript notes, for the specimen of the plant from that learned botanist in the Smithian Herbarium is without fruit. The characters of the genus consist in its campanulate perianthium, with the sepals produced into a short pouch or spur at the base, in the cells of its ovariurrl bearing two ovula, in its baccate pericarpiuni, and in its umbellate inflo- rescence.

    SOME INTERESTING SPRING PLANTS IN PANTHER AND BERWIND LAKE WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREAS Kevin Campbell The WVNPS had a great outing to Panther and Berwind Lake Wildlife Management Areas of McDowell County on April 20-22, 2012. Unfortunately, only three members were able to attend-Tom Fox, Chris Gatens, and myself. We stayed at the huge group camp lodge in Panther WMA. Minutes after arriving we spotted a clump of yellow lady’s slippers in bloom behind the parks headquarters and the interesting finds never stopped all weekend. Patches of blue flowered fern- leaf phacelia lined the roads in the park. We found the rare mandarin in bloom-a southern species reaching the northern limits of its range in West Virginia. The white blooms spotted with purple made them really stand out among the closely related hairy disporum. Another showy plant with dark purple flowers found throughout the very mature forests was the woodland meadow parsnip. One rarely finds such a large amount of 100’ tall hemlock, white oak, yellow birch, yellow poplar, and walnut trees mixed together as you do in Panther. We searched the ridgelines for some time in Berwind Lake WMA for a small southern shrub also reaching the northern limits of its range-recurved fetterbush. Chris first spotted one in bloom in its heath barren habitat. Growing nearby were several whorled pogonias not yet in bloom. We hope to return to Panther WMA next year to look for more southern plants, such as carolina lilly. Abstract To elucidate the affinity and phylogeny of the endemic North American genus Uvularia, two chloroplast genes, matK and rbcL, were sequenced for all five species of the genus {Uvularia floridana, U. grandifolia, U. per- foliata, U. puberula, and U. sessilifolia) and four selected members of the Liliales (Erythronium japonicum, Disporum sessile, Medeola virginiana, and Clintonia borealis). Sequence data of both matK and rbcL genes support an Uvularia which consist of two clades, section Oakesiella and section Uvularia. Though sessile-leaved and associated with sec- tion Oakesiella, U. puberula exhibits several intermediate characteristics between the sections. However, the overall molecular results correspond to an earlier sub-grouping based upon gross morphology, karyology and ecological life history traits. These two cpDNA genes, notably matK tree, proved to be informative in reaffirming relationships with- in Uvularia.

Flowers usually 1 or 2 on an axillary, slender peduncle partly adnate to stem, rarely 2–4 flowers in a terminal inflorescence. Flowers campanulate or subrotate. Tepals 6, free, outer ones usually slightly wider than inner. Stamens 6, inserted at or near base of tepals; filaments usually flat at base; anthers basifixed. Ovary 3-loculed; ovules (2 or 3 or)6–8 per locule. Style columnar or very short. Fruit a berry, globose, several to many seeded.
