Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

Hill and Mark Mitola2 Introduction Description The common carpet beetle, Anthrenus scrophulariae (Lin- Adults: naeus), is a small blackish beetle that is found worldwide. HOME GROUNDS FACT SHEET Horticulture Center Cornell University Demonstration & Community Gardens at East Meadow Farm Cooperative Extension 832 Merrick Avenue East Meadow, NY 11554 Nassau County Phone: 516-565-5265 Carpet Beetles Carpet beetles are “guests” you don’t want coming to dinner. They damage home furnishings and clothing containing natural fibers such as wool, hair, fur, hide and feathers. They may infest peppers, cereals, cake mixes and stored grains. Blankets, sweaters, comforters, rugs, tapestries, carpets, stuffed animals, draperies, pillows, Black Carpet Beetle ( –– ) hair in mattresses and brushes, dried flower arrangements and upholstery frequently harbor these pests. The larvae (immatures) cause the feeding damage. They may crawl from room to room, becoming widely distributed. They may live behind baseboards, molding, in cracks, corners, behind radiators, in heating system air-ducts, in clothes, dresser drawers, etc. The adult beetles are sometimes found on window sills on the sunny side of the house. They fly readily and during warm spring days, feed on flower pollen outdoors. Adults are known to infest wild buckwheat, crepe myrtle and spirea flowers. Adults Carpet Beetle may fly into a house from these sources. ( –– ) In Nassau County there are four different species of carpet beetles: black carpet beetle, common carpet beetle, varied carpet beetle and furniture carpet beetle. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Considerations IPM is a common sense approach to pest control and plant care. It employs a number of measures to prevent, control or reduce problems. Always use the least toxic methods first. A good mechanical control, in many instances, is to vacuum the insects and then throw the bag away. -

Carpet Beetles
Carpet Beetles Damage Furnishings and clothing made of wool, fur, feathers or hair are subject to damage by insects. Some of the most serious insect pests of these articles are known collectively as carpet beetles. Damage may range from the clipping of an occasional fiber, which only slightly weakens the fabric and may go entirely unnoticed, to the total destruction of articles left undisturbed for many months or years. Fabrics made of a combination of wool and synthetic fibers may also be damaged. Feeding damage is done only by immature carpet beetles (larvae), which look like hairy caterpillars. The presence of the adult beetle is simply an indication of an infestation and that susceptible materials should be inspected. Adult beetles usually feed outdoors on flower pollen. Carpet beetle injury can be differentiated from clothes moths damage by the absence of silken webs on the material. Description The most common carpet beetles in Rockland County are the black carpet beetle (Attagenus megatoma) and the varied carpet beetle (Anthrenus verbasci). The adult black carpet beetle is dull black in color, elliptical in outline, and usually about one-fourth inch long. The carpet beetle's antennae and legs are brown. The larva, on the other hand, may grow to a length of one-half inch before entering its pupal stage and transforming into an adult. The larva is somewhat carrot-shaped and bears a tail of long brown hairs. Its body is covered with brown hair. The varied carpet beetle is similar in appearance and habits to other species of carpet beetles commonly found in Rockland. -

Thank you to everyone who has visited the Garden and for all the lovely comments that you have offered which fuels us up to continue the work that we love doing. Much maintenance work and new exciting projects will be worked on over the following months and the gardening team will keep you all updated on our progress in future newsletter. Until then please read on to discover what we have been up to in Garden in the month of October – National Collections, Fern Dell, Flying Carpets and Batman. Himalayan Garden’s Own Autumn Man Dominic having far too much fun – Remind me to half his wages The Autumn Man The Green Man’s origins date back to Pagan and Roman times and can be found on Medieval Churches across Europe. He represents new birth and regrowth. Our own Autumn Man, Dominic, originated under the magnificent Hungarian Oak tree in the Garden (Although I’m sure his parents may have a different opinion on this). Tasked with clearing the fallen leaves, he literally got wrapped up in his work. Autumn usually indicates a sign for all to prepare for the harshness of winter. But in this case Dominic (or should I say Autumn Man) demonstrates the joy of the moment that we all feel after completing a great season in the Garden. -

Williams, former Professor Emeritus Entomology & Plant Pathology Carpet beetles feed on animal and plant substances gray-yellow scales. Larvae are about 1/4 inch long and are such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, hides, horns, silk and light to dark brown. The body is wide and broader at the bone, as well as cereals, cake mixes, red pepper, rye meal rear than the front. and flour. Other substances include powdered milk, dog Adult common carpet beetles are about 1/10 to 1/8 and cat food, leather, book bindings, dead insects, cot- inch long, nearly round and gray to black. They have ton, and linen and rayon when stained with spilled food or animal excreta. The larvae cause the damage. They crawl from room to room and live behind baseboards and moldings and in heating system air ducts, dresser drawers, carpets, clothing and furniture. Four species of carpet beetles are most often encountered: black carpet beetle, Attagenus magatome (Fabr.); varied carpet beetle, Anthrenus verbasci (L.); common carpet beetle, Anthrenus scrophulariae (L.); and furniture carpet beetle, Anthrenus flavipes LeConte. Identification Adult black carpet beetles are oval and shiny black with brownish legs. They vary in body length from 1/8 to 3/16 inch. Larvae are golden to dark brown and are about 1/2 inch long, with the body resembling an elongated car- rot or cigar with a long brush of bristles at the tail end. -
