PERFORMING ARTS • FILM HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts, No. 26 VARNER When early filmgoers watched The Great Train Robbery in 1903, many shrieked in terror at the very last clip, when one of the outlaws turned toward the camera and seemingly fired a gun directly at the audience. The puff of WESTERNS smoke was sudden and hand-colored, and it looked real. Today we can look back at that primitive movie and see all the elements of what would evolve HISTORICAL into the Western genre. Perhaps the Western’s early origins—The Great Train DICTIONARY OF Robbery was the first narrative, commercial movie—or its formulaic yet enter- WESTERNS in Cinema taining structure has made the genre so popular. And with the recent success of films like 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the Western appears to be in no danger of disappearing. Johnson Minneapolis High Coffee Press 2018 A Holmes & Doyle Bibliography Vol. 7, Audio/Visual Materials, Alphabetical Listing INTRODUCTION This bibliography is a work in progress. It attempts to update Ronald B. De Waal’s comprehensive bibliography, The Universal Sherlock Holmes, but does not claim to be exhaustive in content. New works are continually discovered and added to this bibliography. Readers and researchers are invited to suggest additional content. This volume contains an alphabetical listing of audio-visual materials. Coverage of this material begins around 1994, the final year covered by De Waal's bibliography, but may not yet be totally up-to-date (given the ongoing nature of this bibliography). It is hoped that other titles will be added at a later date. The first volume in this supplement focuses on monographic and serial titles, arranged alphabetically by author or main entry. The second volume presents the exact same information arranged by subject. The third volume focuses on the periodical literature of Doyle and Holmes, listing individual articles alphabetically. The fourth volume includes "core" or "primary" citations from the periodical literature. The fifth volume includes "passing" or "secondary" references to Doyle or Holmes in the periodical literature. The sixth volume organizes the periodical literature according to De Waal's original categories. As the bibliography expands, additional annotations will be provided in order to give the researcher a better idea on the exact Holmesian or Doylean reference contained in each article. We grew up with western movie stars like John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Audie Murphy, Randolph Scott and many more. Western actor Bob Steele was born Robert Adrian Bradbury on January 23, 1907 in Portland, Oregon, into a vaudeville family. After about ten years of touring, the family settled in Hollywood, California, where his father soon found work in the movies, first as an actor and later as a director. Bradbury actually directed John Wayne in more westerns than any other director, albeit low-budget ones. By 1920, Robert Bradbury hired his son Bob and Bob's twin brother, Bill (1907–1971), as juvenile leads for a series of adventure movies titled The Adventures of Bob and Bill. Steele's career began to take off for good in 1927, when he was hired by production company Film Booking Offices of America (FBO) to star in a series of westerns. Renamed Bob Steele at FBO, he soon made a name for himself by working for almost every film studio, including Monogram, Supreme, Tiffany, Syndicate, Republic (including several films of the Three Mesquiteers series) and Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC) (including the initial films of their "Billy the Kid" series), plus he had a role in an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men in 1939. -

Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence.” With those lines, Poe’s narrator begins his tale of madness and murder. “The Black Cat,” published in the United States Saturday Post, 19 August 1843, has not only been one of Poe’s most enduring works but also one of the most filmed. Reasons for the popularity of “The Black Cat” are many: some obvious, some obscure, and some eminently arguable. The story is popular among filmmakers, despite its interior nature, because it is a riveting tale of a precipitous descent into nightmare and filled with dreamlike archetypical signposts—like black cats.
