Achieving a global reach on children’s cultural markets: managing the stakes of inter-textuality in digital cultures Valérie-Inés de LA VILLE European Center for Children’s Products Institut d’Administration des Entreprises Université de Poitiers, France [email protected] and Laurent DURUP Project Manager and Game Designer Ouat Entertainment, France [email protected] The aim of this chapter is to shed light on the formation of children’s cultures in a digital global marketplace by developing the idea that, in such a context, inter-textuality consists of a complex intertwining of cultural references partially shaped by commercial strategies. The chapter draws on recent and successful experiences by French animation producers on global cultural markets. Indeed, in order to achieve a global reach on children’s cultural markets, the managerial stakes that producers have to face include making decisions that take into account the competitive positioning of their clients (TV channels or cable broadcasters, internet service providers or web portals), and their programming choices. Moreover, content producers have to deal with inter-textual subtleties also when they design spin-offs policies and consider their potential spread, as well as when they engage their properties in bounded promotional campaigns… Part 1 – The global reach of recent French animation productions 1.1 – Some evidence1 Today, the French animation industry is ranked third in the world and first in Europe, producing each year around 300 new hours of animation. Introduction. In 2011 a former Pixar colleague, Emma Coats, Tweeted a series of storytelling aphorisms that were then compiled into a list and circulated as “Pixar’s 22 Rules Of Storytelling”. She clearly stated in her compilation blog post that the Tweets were “a mix of things learned from directors & coworkers at Pixar, listening to writers & directors talk about their craft, and via trial and error in the making of my own films.” We all learn from each other at Pixar, and it’s the most amazing “film school” you could possibly have. Everybody at the company is constantly striving to learn new things, and push the envelope in their own core areas of expertise. Sharing ideas is encouraged, and it is in that spirit that the original 22 Tweets were posted. However, a number of other people have taken the list as a Pixar formula, a set of hard and fast rules that we follow and are “the right way” to approach story. But that is not the spirit in which they were intended. They were posted in order to get people thinking about each topic, as the beginning of a conversation, not the last word. After all, a hundred forty characters is far from enough to serve as an “end all and be all” summary of a subject as complex and important as storytelling. -

Irimbert of Admont and his Scriptural Commentaries: Exegeting Salvation History in the Twelfth Century Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Shannon Marie Turner Li, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Alison I. Beach, PhD, Advisor David Brakke, PhD Kristina Sessa, PhD Copyright by Shannon Marie Turner Li 2017 Abstract Through an examination of Irimbert of Admont’s (c. 1096-1176) scriptural commentaries, I argue that Irimbert makes use of traditional themes of scriptural interpretation while also engaging with contemporary developments in theology and spirituality. Irimbert of Admont and his writings have been understudied and generally mischaracterized in modern scholarship, yet a case study into his writings has much to offer in our understanding of theology and spirituality at the monastery of Admont and the wider context of the monastic Hirsau reform movement. The literary genre of exegesis itself offers a unique perspective into contemporary society and culture, and Irimbert’s writings, which were written within a short span, make for an ideal case study. Irimbert’s corpus of scriptural commentaries demonstrates strong themes of salvation history and the positive advancement of the Church, and he explores such themes in the unusual context of the historical books of the Old Testament, which were rarely studied by medieval exegetes. Irimbert thus utilizes biblical history to craft an interpretive scheme of salvation history that delicately combines traditional and contemporary exegetical, theological, and spiritual elements. The twelfth-century library at Admont housed an impressive collection of traditional patristic writings alongside the most recent scholastic texts coming out of Paris.
