Credit: iStockphoto Peter Policki, Technical Engineering Manager at Orlando Wines (the parent company for Pernod Ricard Pacific, makers of Jacob’s Creek and Wyndham Estate), says ‘Wine Delivery Automation’ has enabled his company to slash water consumption in its Jacob’s Creek winery at Rowland Flat in the Barossa by nearly 30 per cent. At each of the main transfer points in the winemaking process – from the vineyards, to trucks, to crushing, to fermentation, to centrifuge, to blending, to filtration, to oak, and then to bottling – there is the potential to lose significant volumes of wine when it is transferred through a pipe, and then pushed out with water. By introducing an automated mobile pump to deliver the wine from the source tank to 10 bottling tanks, Orlando Wines reduced unnecessary transfers, accidental wine overflows and water consumption. ‘Waterless transfers are having a significant benefit from the point of view of both wine quality and wastewater management,’ Mr Policki said. Michael Pecar is responsible for reducing energy and water use by 10 per cent across Foster’s Group’s 10 Australian production facilities, which includes its wineries (Wolf Blass and Lindemans) and breweries. This is no small task – based on 2007 figures, Foster’s total annual energy use was 1.74 Petajoules. One Petajoule is roughly 30 million kilowatt hours. -

SPICe Briefing The Scotch Whisky Industry 28 October 2009 09/76 Scherie Nicol Restructuring announcements by large companies within the Scotch Whisky industry over the summer of 2009 have brought the industry under the public and political spotlight. In response, the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee is considering holding an inquiry into the industry. This briefing is intended to provide the Committee with an insight into the current state of the Scotch Whisky industry. First, it takes a look at the main companies and summarises the economic impact of the industry in Scotland in terms of employment, income and exports. The legal framework within which the Scotch Whisky industry operates is also outlined, with a particular look at the upcoming Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 and the existing law with regard to the bottling of Scotch Whisky. The briefing goes on to take a broad overview of the current domestic and international spirits market, with a specific look at the position of Scotch Whisky amidst other spirit drinks such as vodka. Trends within the worldwide whisky market, such as the growth of regional brands and premiumisation, are then examined in more detail, before the key challenges currently facing the industry are outlined. Lastly, Annexes 1 and 2 provide a summary of the restructuring plans announced by Diageo and Whyte & Mackay in recent months. ECONOMIC REPORT FOR HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS ENTERPRISE No 5 9 August 2009 1. Introduction 1.1 This fifth Economic Report for Highlands and Islands Enterprise follows a similar format to the first four reports produced earlier this year. The main purpose is to track impacts of the international and national recessions on the economy of the Highlands and Islands from statistical information, forecasts, news reports and other intelligence, and to highlight areas of growth. The content of the report is intended as suitable for wider circulation, and confidential information that HIE staff will have on specific company performances and prospects, etc, is thus not included. 1.2 Following a summary review of key international and national trends and forecasts, the main implications for the Highlands and Islands are drawn out and new statistical information for the area (or for Scotland where relevant) is interpreted, with a summary of positive and negative features. Summaries are then provided for the five Local Authority areas that are wholly contained within the HIE area and for Argyll and the Islands. These include new statistical indicators (mainly unemployment, vacancies, and house prices and transactions) and key local events or announcements between 1 June and 9 August 2009. Some text is repeated from the 1 June report where still relevant. The main source material and sources of further information are referenced at the end of the report in Section 8. 1.3 The unemployment and vacancy figures for July were released after this report was completed, and will be detailed in the next report. The Claimant Count unemployment rate for the Highlands and Islands Travel to Work Areas remained at 2.7% from June, with a small reduction in numbers unemployed. -
