Announcements A MESSAGE FROM THE 2017 WOMEN’S CONFERENCE SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE: “EQUAL PAY AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING: WHAT IS A WOMAN’S WORTH?” From the beginning, God has held women in high regard… God values women! Genesis 1:27-28, the Message Translation, reminds us that: “God created human beings; He created them godlike, reflecting God’s nature. He created them male AND female.”

E QUAL PAY $$$ • In the United States, a woman working a 40-hour week for an entire year is only compensated .80 cents for every dollar that her white, male, non-Hispanic equivalent is paid. This means that if he is paid $50,000 a year for doing X, a woman in that same position is likely to earn as little as $40,000, comparatively • According to the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), the yearly wage/earnings gap, in median earnings equals $10,470!

• Equal pay affects all women, regardless of occupation, title, educational level, marital status, parental ? h

status, whether retired or working, unionized or not and whether receiving disability or not (Resource t r

The Wage Gap: The Who, How, Why and What To Do, 2016) o w • As women, it is imperative that we continue to address this huge inequality not just for us, but for our s '

families and future generations n a m

HUMAN TRAFFICKING – MODERN DAY SLAVERY o w

• The International Justice Mission (IJM) has found that there are an estimated 35.9 million people held a in slavery today. Children represent an estimated 26% of all forced labor victims. Globally, the average s

cost of a slave is $90 a

• Major forms of trafficking in persons include: sex trafficking, child sex trafficking, forced labor, forced h

child labor, bonded labor or debt bondage, domestic servitude, and unlawful recruitment and use of w t i child soldiers • The United Nations estimates the total number market value of illicit human trafficking at 32 billion U.S. dollars, which ranks it as the world’s third most profitable crime after illicit drugs and arms trafficking

WHAT CAN WE DO TO END HUMAN TRAFFICKING? • Human trafficking exist because a capitalist driven market has placed a market value on vulnerable, at risk populations affected by war, poverty, civil and economic instability and bias against female and minority ethnicities. What we need is a heart change in values to address the demand and end the supply – this takes prayer for victims, perpetrators, and an economic system that supports the marketing of humans for profit. Consider supporting organizations right here in Chicago that are already at work rescuing victims from human trafficking, such as the Dreamcatcher Foundation, the Chicago Dream Center, and The Salvation Army. Endeleo Discovery Channel The temporary closing of the Carter G. Woodson Regional Library for exterior renovation affords the opportunity to visit other branches, namely the George Cleve- land Hall Branch in Bronzeville. The library, named after a prominent African American surgeon and great civic leader, is a landmark building opened under the direction of Viv- ian G. Harsh, the first African American to head a branch of the Chicago Public Library. Built in 1931, the Chicago Landmark plaque that adorns this architecturally significant edifice states that Ms. Harsh compiled an immense African American research collec- tion and initiated pioneering programs that promoted the work of Chicago Black Literary Renaissance writers like Gwendolyn Brooks and Richard Wright. The collection grew and was subsequently relocated to Woodson Library in 1975, where it is still housed today. e l e d eno Carter G. Woodson (seated bottom left) next to Vivian G. The history is far too rich to capture in one writing but leading up to Woodson’s fall re- opening. Endeleo is committed to seeing our library recognized as one of the premier cultural institutions in Chicago and we urge our community to embrace it as part of the catalytic development along the 95th Street Corridor. Rediscover Woodson and become part of the picture.
