Homecoming Sunday • July 14, 2019 8 ©2019 Trinity United Church of Christ. All Rights Reserved. Any unauthorized use or reproduction is strictly prohibited. Pastor's Word Next Level Forgiveness

37”Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults - unless, of course, you want the same treatment. Don’t condemn those who are down; that hardness can boomerang. Be easy on people; you’ll find life a lot easier. 38Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back - given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.” – Luke 6:37-38 MSG

When was the last time you borrowed money and when it came time to pay back, the person that loaned you the money said, “Thanks, but no thanks. Consider it a gift.” I bet not too often, if ever. Most of us, even if we lend to a friend or relative, give a fair share of advice along with the loan, and even add on a hefty judgmental “interest.”

Of course, with all the traps and schemes perpetrated on African American communities – from payday loans, to balloon mortgages, and title loans – and the lower paying jobs with little to no benefits, even if you are a frugal spender and master budgeter, you can find yourself running out of money before you run out of month.

And then, out of nowhere, a medical emergency arises and the family is “between” medical coverage! Perhaps an automobile accident, or slip and fall, or a child’s sports injury results in a trip to the hospital emergency room, and appropriate treatment. To treat a broken arm or leg is typically around $2,500. If it is a concussion, the average medical treatment runs around $18,000! While the hospital will treat you, you will get billed. In the U.S., these medical bills are the leading cause of bankruptcy in our households.

After a time, hospitals sell this debt to bill collectors at pennies to the dollar. Of course, it would be wonderful if they offered families the option to settle their debt at this lower cost, but they don’t. Enter RIP Medical Debt, an incredible company that buys medical debt for the express purpose of forgiving the loan!

Our UCC Justice and Witness Minister, Rev. Traci Blackmon, partnered with RIP Medical Debt to create a program for churches to begin offering this wonderful act of grace in our communities. For the last couple of months I have been working with pastors throughout Chicago to match the UCC donation of $15,000 (for a total of $30,000), which will be used to purchase $2,500,000 of medical debt for households in our communities. While we will not be able to choose the households, we do choose the neighborhoods. Once the debt is acquired, a note will be sent to the family letting them to know they are now free of medical debt, with a short note from our coalition.

What a powerful way to serve!

On Sunday, July 21st, we will be taking a special offering to cover our portion of the $15,000. Please be prayerful as you consider you gift to eliminate medical debt for some of our neighbors.

Asking you to imagine . . .

Our scholars and community members will take action to “Protect Children, Not Guns” to encourage gun violence prevention

On July 17, 2019, our Freedom School will join over 180 Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools sites in 87 cities and 28 states across the country for a National Day of Social Action to “Protect Children, Not Guns.” This action will include a national moment of silence, a letter writing campaign, digital advocacy efforts, and a teach-in. we are rallying community members to support youth safety, and protect children, not guns.

• A child or teen is killed with a gun every 2 hours and 34 minutes in the United States. • 3,410 children and teens were killed by guns in 2017—enough to fill 71 school buses. • Guns kill more children under five each year than law enforcement officers in the line of duty.

This gun violence awareness and prevention effort is part of CDF Freedom Schools. The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading and empowers them to believe in their ability to make a difference. The National Day of Social Action is the cornerstone of the civic engagement component of the CDF Freedom Schools program that encourages community service and social justice advocacy.

5By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
