  • Towards the Development of a Black Mestizo Homiletic Timothy Jones
Black Preaching in Brown Places: Towards the Development of a Black Mestizo Homiletic Timothy Jones PhD Student in Practical Theology/Homiletics Boston University School of Theology Abstract: Many Black neighborhoods across the United States are becoming increasingly Latin@. Black churches in these neighborhoods will need to adjust their ministry practices in order to build community amongst this changing demographic. Borrowing Elizondo’s notion of mestizo as one who can operate as both insider and outsider in different cultural locations, this paper begins to reimagine Black preaching in the churches that serve these changing neighborhoods. Using the postcolonial themes of marginality, hybridity, and self-reflexivity, this paper proposes the beginnings of a Black Mestizo homiletic that looks to merge Black and Latin@ preaching traditions in order to form congregations representative of the community. The Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA, has served its community faithfully since it was founded in 1885. The oldest Black church in Los Angeles, Second Baptist played a very important role in the Civil Rights Movement and actually became the west coast pulpit of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the movement. While ministering at Second Baptist, Dr. King preached messages about serving the community and building the “beloved community” for all people. The challenge of preaching in this “beloved community” has changed in recent years for Second Baptist’s current Pastor, Rev. William Epps, as there have been major shifts in the demographics of Second Baptist’s neighborhood. A community that was once comprised of mixed income African Americans, has now become “a very low-income, largely Latino immigrant community.”1 While the church continues to be primarily African American, made up of members that commute in from other areas, there is a new challenge of preaching in ways that promote the idea of serving this newly Latino community.

  • Who Was Rev. Moon? 37 Unity Through Love
True Parents’ Message and News English Version No. 68 天一國 8年 天曆 APRIL 20203 ARTICLE ONE Responding to True Mother’s Prophetic Guidance By Michael Balcomb t 5 am on March 12, an incoming KakaoTalk message from Dr. Young-ho Yun in our international headquarters awakened me. We’d just concluded a special European seven-day workshop for 120 Japanese members in Istanbul. Fumiko and I were so full of excite- Ament and appreciation for a really great workshop and for the hard work of the two lecturers sent by Rev. Eiji Tokuno from Japan, Rev. Moichiro Nakamura and Mr. Morio Obata. So before going to bed, I’d sent a quick report with some great photos to Korea, hoping they would inspire True Mother at her breakfast table. I suppose I was hoping for a word of encouragement. But the message I read from True Mother in the early morning hours was very different. Rather than warm appreciation, it was a cool and serious warning: “You should be taking the coronavirus threat much more seriously than you are, and you absolutely must refrain from these kinds of large gatherings!” To be honest, I was a little stung. For the past month, we had kept one step ahead of the coronavirus. Over a thousand people from Europe came to World Summit 2020 and the blessing ceremony in Seoul in February and no one got sick, surely a minor miracle. Then, the very next week, our subregional leaders held big Sun- day services all over Europe to share about their Korea experience—and again, nobody got sick.

  • SUMMER 2002 SUMMER 2002 DIRECTORS’ PREVIEW Greetings!!
VOLUME THREE “FROM OUR CAMPUS ON THE HILLSIDE..” SUMMER 2002 SUMMER 2002 DIRECTORS’ PREVIEW Greetings!! As of this writing we are well into the 2002 season. This year has been a great success and was certainly highlighted by the return of Steve "Toots" Toltz. In addition a partial return of another former Sophomore Group Leader, Dave "Lips" Lipof rounds out the complete takeover of Camp Bauercrest by "The Sophomores"! On a more serious note, it is great to have both of them back in one capacity or another. Their skill, dedication and (most importantly) love of the Camp are another reason why this year promises to be something special. We are also graced by the return of Tim Vanier as Head Counselor, Brian Miller as Water front Director, and several Group Leaders. This years Group Leaders are: Seniors, Jeff Newman, Junior A, Andy Nechtem, Junior B, Josh Michaelson, Sophomore A, Jeff Gordon, Sophomore B, Dan Gold and Freshmen, Sam Mathias. This years Group Leaders bring a lot of experi- ence and loyalty to the Camp. We have a lot of returning campers who are coming back for at least their second summer. We also have a lot of counselors returning for in some cases their thirteenth year at the Crest. Our Board of Directors led by Mark Smoller have really been working hard on a voluntary basis to ensure 2002 is a success. We have a lot of neat activities lined up as well as some new things we haven't ever done. I recommend that all Alumni plan to take a trip to the Crest to observe us in action.

  • 'Word-Faith' Before We B
Toxic Churches Word of Faith ...sometimes they just use a derivative, i.e., 'word' or 'faith' or 'word-faith' Before we begin... God alone knows the heart James 3:1 See the difference: aberrant, heretical, heterodox, orthodox, reprobate See the difference: warning, discernment, judging II Timothy 2:15,3:16 We stand: inspired (origin) inerrant in original autographs/mss infallible remember: phone books can be inerrant we mean this in a very special way no 'pick and choose' theology the WHOLE Bible is to be taken at face value and believed See the difference: cultural norms, tradition, opinion Our dear African brothers and sisters will worship very differently than the Christians in Western Europe or the brothers and sisters in the Pacific Rim countries See the difference: some Christians oriented towards logic, knowledge, etc....some Christians oriented towards contemplation, meditation, emotion neither is wrong and each has its strengths and weaknesses Tonight...see the difference between Charismatic, Pentecostal and Word of Faith Tonight: the cessationist position is believed in this church, but that is NOT the focus here this evening. The focus IS on aberrant and heretical doctrine. The fact that some of the Charismatic and/or Pentecostal praxis is involved in the Word of Faith churches is incidental to our class. We are NOT critiquing or questioning the basic doctrine, salvation or motivation of the typical Charismatic or Pentecostal group. To be remembered: Jude 11 reminds us that a love of money and/or immorality mark the false prophet; Deuteronomy 18 reminds us of many hallmarks of the false prophet Question: with Christians already in the minority, should we be calling out other people of who have a belief? Remember: Zedekiah, Pashur, Baalam, Diotrephes, Simon, Elymas, Jannes, Jambres, etc....all 'called out' in scripture.

The Center for Theological Research Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Fort Worth, Texas Malcolm B. Yarnell, III, Director Southern Baptists, Tongues, and Historical Policy A White Paper from the CTR Southern Baptists, Tongues, and Historical Policy Historical Precedent The situation seems all too familiar now. Trustees of a mission board, empowered to enact policies they believe best represent Southern Baptist doctrine and practice, pass a new policy which stipulates that any missionary candidate who speaks in a private prayer language has disqualified himself from consideration. This stricter set of regulations is first birthed via general guidelines which the trustees believed needed to be codified with stronger language. Subsequently, one trustee speaks out against the new directive questioning the definition of glossolalia (Gr., “speaking in tongues”).1 Moreover, the president of the agency, elected because he was considered a conservative, incredibly speaks out against the new policy, although he subsequently promises to follow its guidelines.2 Finally, accusations are then leveled at some of the trustees, alleging a dispensational view of Scripture is behind these actions.

  • Mobilizing the Moral Majority
DOCUMENT RESUME ED 225 886 SO 014 441 AUTHOR Liebman, Robert C. TITLE Mobilizing the Moral Majority. PUB DATE Apr 82 NOTE 23p.; Paper presented at the Annual Meeting ofthe American Sociological Association (San Francisco, CA, September 1982). Financial support providedby the Princeton University, Dept. of Sociology. PUB TYPE Information Analyses (070) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC01 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS Comparative Analysis; Organizational Effectiveness; Political Influences; *Political Power;*Religious Organizations; Social Networks; *Success IDENTIFIERS Mobilization; *Moral Majority; Social,Movements ABSTRACT The Moral Majority has been more successful in mobilizing conservative Christians than three otherevangelical groups--Third Century Publishers, Christian Voice, and theReligious Roundtable. According to the literature on socialmovements, four Oossible explanations for the success of such groups arethat they have access to financial resources, canmaintain an exfensive network of communications between organizers andconstituents, can draw upon the expertise and skills of social movemententrepreneurs, and can mobilize during a period in time in'which thersis a favorable conjunction of issues. None of these factors proveswholly satisfactory in accounting for differences among thefour organizations in their mobilization of supporters. The Moral Majority was more successfulbecause its leadership provided it with access to pre-existing networks which were unavailable toother Christian groups. For example, JerryFalwell's "Old Time Gospel Hour" provided a communications linkvia television to a large national audience. The Moral Majority's genius lay in linkingwith a national network of nservative clergymen and in championing issues ofmajor concern to this group. While taking advantage of thesepre-existing associations, the Moral Majority did have to accommodatetheir previously organized constituenciesk (RM) *********************************************************************** Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that canbe made from the original document.
