SACRED MEMORY IN A BLACK CHURCH CONTEXT David K. Brawley St. Paul Community Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York Life is shaped by what we remember and what we forget. Identity is shaped by how we remember. This project examines a long-standing annual event at St. Paul Community Baptist Church of Brooklyn, NY, to ascertain its value and sustainability as sacred memory in the community. As defined in this project, sacred memory encompasses the community’s intentional, ritualized acts to recover, reinforce, and retain communal identity. St. Paul's expression of sacred memory called MAAFA addresses the trauma experienced by African- Americans from the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the residuals of slavery. With over two decades in our rear view, we explore the power of sacred memory within the context of a congregation deeply connected to its community’s needs and traumas. Beyond local import, MAAFA has been a template for congregations worldwide to address local needs through a decidedly incarnational ministry of sacred memory. We seek to discover, has a culture of sacred memory been thoroughly understood and established? Is the importance of sacred memory through MAAFA significant to the next generation? Do we see this ritual of remembering as an essential aspect of our identity? In short, "Where do we go from here?" To investigate this query, we administered a pre-survey to establish a baseline of involvement and understanding concerning MAAFA. This information was used to inform the curriculum for a three day mini-conference to orient new members and reorient veteran members. A post-survey was conducted to test the effectiveness of the conference and participant reactions. Responses were contrasted to the initial survey to measure the congregation's evolving disposition and understanding of MAAFA. Results showed that the congregation is committed to continuing the commemoration. We also discovered that the community is interested in a yearly pedagogical effort to deepen our institutional understanding of MAAFA as a sacred memory ritual. On this basis, our church is investigating new and innovative ways to continue our work in sacred memory in a decidedly digital world. Thank you for your trust and your willingness to imagine together. iii INTRODUCTION In 1967 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community. Ironically and eerily, much of the subject matter of his last book before his untimely death is as relevant today as it was then. The subtitle suggests there are only two options for America: chaos or community. Dr. King's vision of the beloved community is rooted in the notion that America would need more than ratified legislation. King called for a radical redistribution of wealth and racial parity. Community, as King described, was full enfranchisement and economic inclusion in the wealthiest nation in the world. Put plainly, Dr. King was calling for an America beyond the rhetoric of change. As King has said, "the moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice," suggesting that change is not an overnight occurrence but a journey. The power of sacred memory grounds us in our authentic communal identity and sustains us to continue the work for justice. Sacred memory can assist us in forming prophetic communities that fight for freedom. How can the community be formed or re-membered for African Americans after the trauma of slavery? What makes it possible for traumatized people to claim their voice and space? How can we express and fight for that freedom despite the effects of an imposed colonized mindset? One answer: sacred memory. Sacred memory goes beyond “good ol’ days” reflections. Instead, it is the community's act to remember a collective journey. America remains at the crossroads of change. For the oppressed and marginalized, sacred memory provides the space to shed the constraints of Black inferiority and White 1 2 supremacy, making change possible. However, without the recovery of a painful history, there cannot be healing. This project focuses on an expression of sacred memory embraced by the St. Paul Community Baptist Church of Brooklyn, NY, called MAAFA. With global implications for healing, St. Paul seeks through MAAFA to reorient itself as well as to recommit to and introduce a new generation to the work of sacred memory. In the pages that follow, we strive to assert the collective identity of St. Paul as a congregation called to share the power of memory with the world. In the spirit of sacred memory, I have framed each chapter of this writing with the lyrics of James Weldon Johnson's offering, Lift Every Voice and Sing. More than a soundtrack,

    NGOLO: (Re)membering the African American Child as a Normative for Self-Healing Power Patricia Nunley ORCID iD: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3437-8135 Abstract In response to the need to clarify the ongoing experience of historical and contemporary trauma by African American people in the USA, Dr. Wade Nobles, co-founder and past President of the ABPsi introduced the concept of ‘Psychic Terrorism’ which he defined as the systematic use of terror to immobilize and/or destabilize a person’s fundamental sense of security and safety by assaulting his or her consciousness and identity (2015: 4). The USA’s practice of psychic terrorism demands that special attention be given to African American children’s identity development. In this regard, the unconstrained, western research’s dominance continues to function as a hindrance to the understanding of Black children’s positive identity development and resultant well-being. In this context the African child’s double invisibility (Jonsson 2009; Nsamenang 2007), obscurity and under-publication, and the African American child’s double visibility, pathologies and over-publication (Jackson & Moore 2008; Kunjufu1992), inhibits an appreciation of Black children’s substantive self-identity knowledge. The consequence of this for the African Child is unrecognition of their normativity as the universal original child. For the African American child, this unrecognition also impairs their connection to their generative African essence or Ngolo. Ngolo, as defined by Fu-Kiau, means in Kikongo, the ‘energy of self-healing power’. By employing the child development discipline, this article will problematize the minimization of the African child as the norm while illuminating the critical need for African American children to function in wholeness and wellness.

    Black Preaching in Brown Places: Towards the Development of a Black Mestizo Homiletic Timothy Jones PhD Student in Practical Theology/Homiletics Boston University School of Theology Abstract: Many Black neighborhoods across the United States are becoming increasingly Latin@. Black churches in these neighborhoods will need to adjust their ministry practices in order to build community amongst this changing demographic. Borrowing Elizondo’s notion of mestizo as one who can operate as both insider and outsider in different cultural locations, this paper begins to reimagine Black preaching in the churches that serve these changing neighborhoods. Using the postcolonial themes of marginality, hybridity, and self-reflexivity, this paper proposes the beginnings of a Black Mestizo homiletic that looks to merge Black and Latin@ preaching traditions in order to form congregations representative of the community. The Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA, has served its community faithfully since it was founded in 1885. The oldest Black church in Los Angeles, Second Baptist played a very important role in the Civil Rights Movement and actually became the west coast pulpit of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the movement. While ministering at Second Baptist, Dr. King preached messages about serving the community and building the “beloved community” for all people. The challenge of preaching in this “beloved community” has changed in recent years for Second Baptist’s current Pastor, Rev. William Epps, as there have been major shifts in the demographics of Second Baptist’s neighborhood. A community that was once comprised of mixed income African Americans, has now become “a very low-income, largely Latino immigrant community.”1 While the church continues to be primarily African American, made up of members that commute in from other areas, there is a new challenge of preaching in ways that promote the idea of serving this newly Latino community.

  • NAARC Reparations Program
    Background and Purpose This document is the product of the initial deliberations of the seventeen member Na- tional African American Reparations Commission. [See list at the conclusion of this document]. Convened by the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW), the National African American Reparations Commission (NAARC) derives its inspiration from and is modeled after the CARICOM Reparations Commission which, is mobilizing/organizing to demand compensation from the former European colonialists for Native genocide and African enslavement. This demand is being made with the unanimous support/blessing of the nations of the Caribbean. The bold move by the CARICOM nations to form such a Com- mission has captured the imagination of people of African descent throughout the Pan African world and is providing a major spark to the global Reparations Movement. Inspired by the courageous example of the CARICOM Commission, the primary goal of NAARC is to serve as a vehicle, among others, to intensify, broaden and deepen the Reparations Movement in the U.S. From its inception the formulation of a Preliminary Reparations Program has been a major task of the Commission. While the formulation of such a Program is important, the Commission believes an educational process that engages people of African descent in a national dialogue about proposals for repara- tions is as important as a particular set of proposals or action agenda. Educating, en- gaging and activating people of African descent to support Reparations as a concept is the major task of NAARC. The centerpiece of the Commission’s education and advocacy eff orts will be the conven- ing of Regional Hearings and community events to present the Preliminary Reparations Program and receive input, suggestions and recommendations for consideration for the Final Reparations Program.

Some people believe these two words are considered more suitable and offer a better description of the Black Family Experience due to Crimes of Racism. MAAFA refers to the colonization of Africa and enslavement of African People, and the sustained attempt to successfully dehumanize the Black Family. Science has proven that environment shapes heredity. Racism or The MAAFA has disconnected Africans from their cultural origins, and in the case of the African in America, the perpetrators of their long time injuries have created a new African tribe in America who were called many names, but the latest term is African-American. They do not have their native languages or names, and they have been forcibly removed from their homeland. They do not have good social standing, and they do not have an economic foundation. They are in great need of repair and they have remained vulnerable to a social order that does not reflect their traditional identity. This is abstract and concrete proof of the Black Family being in great need of repair from suffering and damage. MAAGAMIZI refers to the intentionality of what happened to African people. Which means it did not happen by accident.

    Serial Forced Displacements and the Decline of Ubuntu in Afrikan American Communities Huberta Jackson-Lowman ORCID iD: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2933-6192 Abstract Serial forced displacement, the ‘repetitive, coercive upheaval of groups’, is examined as a key feature of the ongoing Maafa or Afrikan Holocaust and explored as a primary source of the disruption of Ubuntu in Black communities in the United States. According to Fullilove (2016), disconnecting people from their land, their culture, history, traditions, values, and relationships creates ‘root shock’ which undermines natural tendencies to exhibit respect, compassion, caring, cooperation, and support of one’s fellow human beings, or what South Afrikan people refer to as ‘Ubuntu.’ African philosophy suggests that Ubuntu is a common moral position passed down over generations by Afrikan people. Its presence has been noted in segregated Black communities, which is illustrative of the retention of Ubuntu amongst Afrikan Americans. American housing policies at the federal, state, and local levels, along with private development initiatives that have led to gentrification of many Black neighbourhoods, are identified as the main culprits in the diminishment of Ubuntu through the uprooting and destruction of numerous thriving Black communities. It is suggested that these housing policies are the most recent examples of serial forced displacement and are at the root of much of the community disorganization, health disparities, violence, and family instability observed in many low-income Black neighbourhoods. The development of cultural standards that prescribe cultural policies which are designed to restore Ubuntu in Black communities is recommended as a palliative for ameliorating the dehumanizing environment created by serial forced displacements.
