CHURCH-COMMUNION ENQUIRED INTO he first part of this article (SRSHJ 2) focused on the position that Alexander Shields (1660?-1700) adopted in relation to the RevolutionT Church of Scotland in 1690 which brought him into disagreement with some of his former colleagues among the United Societies. There we followed the events relating to these differences up to around 1703.1 This sequel resumes from that point in time in considering the treatise Church-Communion enquired into that Shields had left in manuscript. This was published in 1706 by Thomas Linning during a significant moment in the history of Church and nation in Scotland and a time of intense speculation and debate.2 James Walker describes this book as “once well known and often referred to” but both its contents and context now require extensive description. Throughout Scotland and beyond it, John Howie has been a power for good for more than a century. Strictly speaking, he ought to be described as John Howie in Loch- goin, not of Lochgoin, as he was merely the tenant, not the that moor-land owner ; but the Howie family have occupied farm for so many generations that they are constantly and naturally spoken of as the Howies of Lochgoin; and of the many Johns in that family the author of The Scots Worthies is preeminently known as John Howie of Loch- goin. There is no certainty as to the precise year, not even as to the precise century, in which the Howie's first went to Lochgoin; nor is there any certainty as to the district or country from which they came. The origin of the Howies, indeed, like that of many of the oldest landed Scottish fam- ilies, is lost in the haze of antiquity. In one passage, the author of The Scots Worthies thus refers to the origin of his family "Our house had been very ancient in suffering for relig- ion; (some have said that our first progenitors in this land 1 fled from the French persecution in the 9th century)." But he saw through their weakness: he had only carried the principles that they all upheld − the right of God’s people to resist unholy rule, the duty of God’s Scotland to defend the Covenant against prelatic blasphemy − to their logical conclusion. What they shied away from was their own fear: they were afraid to strike the righteous blow, to be the sword of the Lord and of Gideon.”2 These words refer to the fictional character James Mitchel in the historical novel The Fanatic by the contemporary Scottish author James Robertson. The novel narrates the incarceration of the “justified sinner” Mitchel after he attempted to assassinate one of the great enemies of the Covenanters, archbishop James Sharp, in 1668. -

Samuel Rutherford, the author of the seraphic Letters, was born in the south of Scotland in the year of our Lord . Thomas Goodwin was born in England in the same year, Robert Leighton in , Richard Baxter in , John Owen in , John Bunyan in , and John Howe in . A little vellum-covered volume now lies open before me, the title-page of which runs thus:„Joshua Redivivus, or Mr. Rutherford‟s Letters, now published for the use of the people of God: but more particularly for those who now are, or may afterwards be, put to suffering for Christ and His cause. By a well-wisher to the work and to the people of God. Printed in the year .‟ That is all. It would not have been safe in to say more. There is no editor‟s name on the title-page, no publisher‟s name, and no place of printing or of publication. Only two texts of forewarning and reassuring Scripture, and then the year of grace . Joshua Redivivus: That is to say, Moses‟ spy and pioneer, Moses‟ successor and the captain of the Lord‟s covenanted host come back again. A second Joshua sent to Scotland to go before God‟s people in that land and in that day; a spy who would both by his experience and by his testimony cheer and encourage the suffering people of God. For all this Samuel Rutherford truly was. -

To date, however, an in-depth analysis of the evolution of Scottish apocalyptic belief during the seventeenth century has never been undertaken. This thesis utilizes a wide variety of source material to demonstrate the existence of a cohesive, persistent, and largely conservative tradition of apocalyptic thought in Scotland that spanned the years 1588 to 1688. Chapter One examines several influential commentaries on the Book of Revelation published by notable Scots during the decades either side of the Union of Crowns. These works reveal many of the principal characteristics that formed the basis of the Scottish apocalyptic tradition. -

The Reputation of George Buchanan (1506-82) in the British Atlantic World before 1832 Caroline Frances Erskine Department of History University of Glasgow A thesis submitted to the University of Glasgow in October 2004 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. @ Caroline Frances Erskine 2004 2 Abstract This thesis examines the reputation of the Scottish political theorist and historian George Buchanan (1506-82), not only within Scotland but also as it was transmitted throughout the British Atlantic World during the seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In order to assess how his name and ideas have been abused by later generations, the thesis begins by examining Buchanan's own beliefs in their sixteenth-century context. The Calvinist faith that defined Buchanan for later generations was, it transpires, tempered during his lifetime by a devotion to humanism. Yet Buchanan's status as a pillar of the Scottish Reformation establishment was an important factor in making his name and ideas usable (or, on the other hand, unusable) for political theorists in later centuries. The central focus of the thesis is on Buchanan's political theory, particularly on the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century afterlife of his radical and popular theory of the right of resistance against tyrannical rulers, outlined in his De lure Regni apud Scotos (1579) and the Rerum Scoticarum Historia (1582). Within the political cultures of Scotland, England, Ireland, and the American colonies, Buchanan's reputation was most vigorously contested during periods of political crisis and revolution: the Covenanting uprisings of seventeenth-century Scotland; the revolutions against the Stuarts in seventeenth-century England; the American Revolution; the era of the French Revolution; and, finally, the radical era in Scotland in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. -

Dykstra presents the third installment ofhis four part series on "A Comparison of Exegesis: John Calvin and Thomas Aquinas:~ According to the professor, two main differ ences emerge, which clearly indicate serious differences in the interpretation that the two men give ofEphesians ~: 1-14 and 6: 10 17. Dykstra finds plenty of Medieval scholasticism in Aquinas' exegesis. Also, Aquinas used the Latin Vulgate. Calvin, on the other hand, was able to work with the Greek, and this resulted in a correct translation and~ therefore, correct exposition. Mark L. Shand presents the second part of his series titled~ "In the Space of Six Days." He concludes convincingly, "The approach to the days ofGenesis 1 that prevailed at the end ofthe eighteenth century is almost unrecognizable when compared with the one that parades itselfin the halls oftheological learning at the end ofthe twentieth century. What has led to the change? Quite clearly, it is not greater exegetical insight, but so-called scientific discoveries..., Chris Coleborn relates a fascinating account of "The Rela tionship ofthe Reformed Churches ofScotland, England, Western and Eastern Europe from the 1500s to the 1700s."
