    The 12th ARA Rowing Tour The North Yorkshire Navigations Ripon - York - Cawood on the Ripon Canal and Rivers Ure and Ouse Thursday 28th – Sunday 31st July 2005 York Minster The waterway was planned as long ago as 1766 when the engineer, John Smeaton (1724 - 1792), presented a proposal for five lock structures on the 8 miles of the River Ure, and the 2 ¼ miles of the Ripon Canal itself. Public subscription raised £15,000 and a petition was made to Parliament in 1767. The works were carried out by the engineer, John Smith, and Milby lock and cut were completed in 1769. One of the first cast iron bridges in the country was built over the canalised section of the waterway to carry the Great North Road at Boroughbridge.The canal was opened in 1773, and carried flax for the Knaresborough linen industry, as well as timber and coal. Although the British Transport Commission obtained Royal Assent for the abandonment of the Ripon Canal in 1956, it was successfully right into the centre of Ripon in September 1996. Our tour starts at Littlethorpe, just south of Ripon, the first point at which there is a suitable launching place for our boats. At Oxclose Lock the canal joins the River Ure, which is navigable from that point downwards. The Ure is an exceptionally pretty navigation and is rarely crowded. Newby Hall and its splendid gardens are just above Westwick Lock. At Swale Nab the Ure changes its name to the Ouse. The magnificent York Minster stands sentinel as the river flows for 60 miles through fertile land and centuries of history, on its way towards Goole and the mighty Humber.

    1 Cause Papers in the Diocesan Courts of the Archbishopric of York, 1300–1858 Editing and Standardisation in the Cause Papers Database The Cause Papers project provided an on-line searchable catalogue of more than 13,000 cause papers relating to cases heard between 1300 and 1858 in the Church Courts of the diocese of York, the original records for which are held at the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York. The project aimed to pioneer a new standard of excellence in data accuracy and standardization. Cataloguing such a large and varied number of records posed numerous challenges in these areas, including the problem of how to incorporate spelling and language variations of surname and place names. The following document provides information on the methods used by the project team in compiling, editing and standardizing the data.
