The area in front of the cave was excavated in the early 20th century, but the interior appears to have been left untouched and unexplored. A. von Gerkan published drawings and photographs of the exte- rior in his book on the city walls of Miletus, because the walls pass outside the cave1. G. Kleiner in his general overview of Miletus identifies the cave as an ancient sanctuary and notes two building phases, an earlier one and a Roman renovation2. In 2013 the city walls were again under investigation, now with a focus on their latest, Byzantine phase that had previously received little attention3. The Byzantine city walls have a gate in front of the cave, and in order to exclude the cave as a possible reason for this gate as well as to remedy the omission of previous research, it was decided to investigate the interior4. The cave turned out to contain a spring and can thus be identified as a healing shrine. It underwent two main building phases, both of which appear to be linked to building phases of the theatre, one Hellenistic and the other Roman; the earlier, pre-Hellenistic situation has been largely obscured by the later interventions. The cave contained terracotta figures and limbs that might have been votive offerings. 44 late antique oil lamps may also have been votives; they were buried inside the spring, when the spring was filled in at the turn of the fifth century A.D. or soon thereafter. The infill also contained marble sculptures from the stage building of the Roman theatre that had previ- ously been mutilated, probably by Christians and possibly in order to mar their beauty. The infill hid the spring as well as burying the lamps and marbles. This appears to have had the twofold function of closing the sanctuary – probably in response to the anti-pagan laws of the Theodosian emperors – and of protect- ing the sacred spring, the votive offerings, as well as the marble sculptures from further abuse and destruction. In addition, findings from around the cave also shed light on the history of the seaward defences that may date back to Archaic times and, in the Byzantine period, were renovated to include a sophisticated gate with zwinger. The extant Latin defixiones are attested from the 2nd cent. BCE to the end of the 4th and begin- ning of the 5th century. However, the number of extant tablets is certainly not final, which is clear from the new findings in Mainz recently published by Blänsdorf (2012, 34 tablets),1 the evidence found in the fountain dedicated to Anna Perenna in Rome 2012, (26 tablets and other inscribed magical items),2 or the new findings in Pannonia (Barta 2009).3 The curse tablets were addressed exclusively to the supernatural powers, so their authors usually hid them very well to be banished from the eyes of mortals; not to speak of the randomness of the archaeological findings. Thus, it can be assumed that the preserved defixiones are only a fragment of the overall ancient production. Remarkable diversities in cursing practice can be found when comparing the preserved defixiones from particular provinces of the Roman Empire and their specific features, as this contribution wants to show. After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

    How to Restart an Oracle: Politics, Propaganda, and the Oracle of Apollo at Didyma c.305-300 BCE The Sacred Spring at Didyma dried up when the Persians deported the Branchidae to central Asia at the conclusion of the Ionian revolt c.494. It remained barren throughout the fifth and most of the fourth centuries and thus prophecy did not flow. However, when Alexander the Great liberated Miletus in 334, the spring was reborn and with it returned the gift of prophecy. After nearly two centuries, the new oracle at Didyma was not the same as the old one. This begs the question, how does one restart an oracle? The usual account is that Alexander appointed a new priestess, who immediately predicted his victory over Persia and referred to him as a god. In the historical tradition, largely stemming from Callisthenes, the renewed oracle is thus linked to Alexander, but words are wind and tradition can be manipulated. There are issues with the canonical chronology: Miletus reverted briefly to Persian control in Alexander’s wake; the Branchidae, the hereditary priests, still lived in central Asia (Hammond 1998; Parke 1985); and, most tellingly, construction on a new temple did not start for another thirty years. In fact, the renewal of the oracle only appears after Seleucus, who supposedly received three favorable oracles in 334, found the original cult statue and returned it to Miletus (Paus. 1.16.3). In the satiric account of the prophet Alexander, Lucian of Samosata declares the oracles of old, including Delphi, Delos, Claros, and Branchidae (Didyma), became wealthy by exploiting the credulity and fears of wealthy tyrants (8).
