Vol. 5, No. 3, Spring 2008, 75-94 www.ncsu.edu/project/acontracorriente The Politics of Literary Prestige: Promoting the Latin American “Boom” in the Pages of Mundo Nuevo Russell Cobb University of Alberta The history of the Boom… is written in the pages of Mundo Nuevo. —José Donoso Nothing kills a man like having to represent a country. —Jacques Vache I. Decades have passed since the Boom ended and yet the period remains controversial among critics. Was it a literary movement or a marketing phenomenon? Why were certain authors (Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, etc.) given pride of place over others (Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Severo Sarduy, Augusto Roa Bastos)? Who was primarily responsible for making the Boom such an unprecedented success in international literary circles? This much is agreed upon: in roughly one decade, Latin American fiction emerged from obscurity in Europe and the United States to become a major critical and commercial phenomenon. International recognition had already been bestowed upon Latin American poets such as Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Cobb 76 Mistral, and César Vallejo earlier in the twentieth century while fiction writers remained curiously neglected in what Pascale Casanova has called the “World Republic of Letters.” With the Boom in the early 1960s, however, for the first time in history, Latin American writers were widely translated, published, and awarded the most prestigious literary prizes on the planet. At the risk of oversimplifying matters, there are essentially two strands of thought regarding the Boom’s overwhelming critical and commercial success. There are its supporters, who believe that Boom novels flourished because of the writers’ full embrace of cosmopolitan modernism, or what Goethe called Weltliteratur, a concept of literature as a space existing outside national or linguistic boundaries. -

We truly hope that you have enjoyed our conversations and that you have become more interested and curious about Luso-Hispanic literature and culture through listening to our episodes. Today, we will be discussing our 1977 recording with Colombian Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez, or Gabo, as some of us like to call him (which is how we Colombians like to call this monumental author). TGG: We all like to call him el Gabo, in Latin America. He’s ours. CG: So García Márquez was born in Aracataca, Colombia in 1928. He is the author of more than ten novels and novellas, including Cien años de soledad, One Hundred Years of Solitud from 1967, El otoño del patriarca, The Autumn of the Patriarch, from 1975, and El amor en los tiempos del cólera, Love in the Time of Cholera from 1985. -

Baseamo-nos em estudos da tradução cultural assim como nos estudos culturais. Abordamos a questão da intraduzibilidade e da impossibilidade da tradução por Mounin (1975) e Ronái (1989), além da tradução cultural por Aubert (1995, 1998). Apoiamo-nos também nos estudos culturais de Fanon (1979), Hall (2002) e Bhabha (2007). Classificamos os termos coletados com base nos procedimentos técnicos da tradução categorizados por Vinay e Darbelnet (1960 apud CAMPOS, 1987). Constatamos que muitos dos termos selecionados se classificam como empréstimo e adaptação, o que ressalta uma relativa lacuna entre idiomas diferentes, que nem sempre têm o mesmo termo ao traduzirmos uma cultura por outra. The Translation of Culturally Marked Terms in Jorge Amado’s books into English Language Abstract An analysis of culturally marked terms in the translation of three books by Jorge Amado into English language is presented. It is based on cultural translations studies and general cultural studies. Issues concerning untraduzibility and the impossibility of translation (according to Mounin (1975) and Ronái (1989), as well as those concerning cultural translation (according to Aubert (1995, 1998)) were approached. -

http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7968.2013v1n31p119 JORGE AMADO AND THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF BRAZILIAN LITERATURE Elizabeth Lowe University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign [email protected] Abstract: Jorge Amado (1912-2001) is the most translated Brazi- lian writer and the literary figure that has shaped the reception of Brazilian literature in the world. He is credited with opening the international literary market to the post-dictatorship generation of Brazilian writers. Yet Amado is also a controversial figure. The debate around him is sparked by what some believe is sexual and ethnic stereotyping in his post-1958 works and the reinforcement of “paternalistic “racial views. His reception therefore is mixed. For his English-language readers, he is a fascinating source of exotic and titillating narratives about the vast, unknown country of Brazil, and for Brazilians he is either a “great ambassador of Brazilian culture around the world” or a faux populist who dis- guises sexist and racist attitudes behind charming prose. This talk will address Amado’s literary career, his unique contributions to Brazilian letters, the challenges of translating his work, and his influence on the production of a new Brazilian literature for export Keywords: reception, controversy, translation. LT 375 BARCELONA AND THE LATIN AMERICAN LITERARY BOOM IES Abroad Barcelona DESCRIPTION: This course provides an introduction to one of the fundamental chapters of twentieth century literature: the generation known as the Latin American “boom”. Through the work of its most notable writers —Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa and José Donoso, among others— the course will study the literary works that made the reputation of Latin American literature, as well as the key role played by Barcelona in its emergence and diffusion. CREDITS: 3 credits CONTACT HOURS: 45 hours LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: Spanish PREREQUISITES: None METHOD OF PRESENTATION: Lectures Class discussions Student presentations Video screenings of interviews Walks and visits Critical reading and discussions of novels and short‐stories REQUIRED WORK AND FORM OF ASSESSMENT: Class participation (20%); Term paper outline (5%); Term paper final draft (25%); Oral presentation in Spanish (10%); Mid‐term exam (20%); Final exam (20%) Students will choose any text from the Latin American authors discussed in class, and present their work in progress at three different stages: a one or two page outline due on session 10, an oral presentation on sessions 18‐19, and an 1800‐word term paper due on session 23. The work will be written in Spanish. Class participation is expected to stimulate and enrich class discussion; this grade will take into account every aspect of the student’s performance, including preparation, contributions, effort and attentiveness. Midterm and final exams will be essay format, asking students to read closely, analyze, and interpret a particular passage of one of the texts studied. -

The Book-of-the-Month Club marketed books as commodities for consumption, promoting leisurely reading among the growing middle class. But the Book-of-the-Month Club also claimed to be ‘stimulating our literature and deepening our culture’, and in fact, dozens of selected authors went on to receive the Pulitzer Prize or the Nobel Prize for Literature. The body of research on the Book-of-the-Month Club includes Janice A. Radway’s well-known multi-method study A Feeling for Books (1997). But translations among Book-of-the-Month Club selections have not yet been considered. Focusing in particular on books translated into English from German, this paper will present new data on originally foreign-language books that were selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club judges, thereby guaranteeing European authors maximum visibility and exorbitant sales in the US market, which was (and is) usually considered difficult to tap into for non-Anglophone writers. [email protected] Abstract— Magic realism is a distinct subgenre of writing that works on the mechanism of paradoxes of placing two opposites together to make a rich and complex meaning – the fusion of real and fantastic as Angel Flores calls it ‘amalgamation of realism and fantasy’. Magic Realism can also be read as a Postcolonial weapon as it fight backs the traditional tendencies and the staunch realism of western literature. Female voices have also employed magic realism to say aloud the problems of women across the globe. Magic Realism has thrived well in the hands of women writers across cultures and continents. Toni Morrison, Isabel Allende, Laura Esquivel, Chitra Divakaruni Banerjee, Arundhathi Roy, Sarah Addison Allen, Yaa Gyasi, Raja Alem etc. This paper proposes to bring into limelight the Latin American Women Writers who are often left out to be mentioned along the list of men Latin American writers. Just as realism was a response to romanticism, magic realism, which the Latin American claim to be their magical realism was a reaction to realism. -

Jorge Amado’s Salvador da Bahia: Transcultural Place-Making and the Search for “Brazilianness” Martina Kopf ABSTRACTS Der Beitrag untersucht den Entwurf eines transkulturellen Orts und die damit verknüpfte Su- che nach brasilianischer Identität in Jorge Amados (1912–2001) Werk. Amados bevorzugter Schauplatz ist der brasilianische Bundesstaat Bahia, der für seine kulturellen Verbindungen zu Afrika und seine afrobrasilianische Bevölkerung bekannt ist. In Amados Roman Tenda dos mi- lagres (Werkstatt der Wunder) (1968) wird Bahias Hauptstadt Salvador zu einem Ort, an dem kulturelle Einfüsse afrikanischer, brasilianischer und europäischer Herkunft aufeinandertrefen. Mittelpunkt des Romans ist das historische Zentrum von Salvador da Bahia, auch bekannt als Pelourinho, den Amado mit einer Art afrobrasilianischer „Universität“ vergleicht. Der Pelourinho wird so zu einem Ort, an dem brasilianische Kultur als transkulturelle Kultur entsteht, praktiziert und erfahrbar wird. Indem Amado Salvador da Bahia als „Wiege brasilianischer Kultur“ be- und damit brasilianischer Kultur einen konkreten Ort zu-schreibt, leistet er einen Beitrag zur Defniti- on brasilianischer Identität sowohl in einem nationalen als auch einem kulturellen Rahmen. Die Suche nach einer brasilianischen Identität bedeutet nicht zuletzt, die ehemalige Kolonie neu zu bewerten und zu emanzipieren. Amado weist Brasilien in seinem Roman eine Pionieraufgabe zu: Salvador da Bahia wird als „Nabel der Welt“ stilisiert und der mestiço als Ergebnis der inter- kulturellen Begegnungen wird zu einem „Menschen der Zukunft“ deklariert. Im Mittelpunkt des Beitrags steht also die Frage, wie ein Ort durch transkulturelle Prozesse gestaltet wird. Der Bei- trag knüpft damit an Paul Gilroys Aussage an, dass transkulturelle Konzepte nicht nur Dynamik und Unruhe betonen, sondern vor allem auch die mit transkulturellen Prozessen verbundene Kreativität. -
