Vol. 5, No. 3, Spring 2008, 75-94 www.ncsu.edu/project/acontracorriente The Politics of Literary Prestige: Promoting the Latin American “Boom” in the Pages of Mundo Nuevo Russell Cobb University of Alberta The history of the Boom… is written in the pages of Mundo Nuevo. —José Donoso Nothing kills a man like having to represent a country. —Jacques Vache I. Decades have passed since the Boom ended and yet the period remains controversial among critics. Was it a literary movement or a marketing phenomenon? Why were certain authors (Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, etc.) given pride of place over others (Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Severo Sarduy, Augusto Roa Bastos)? Who was primarily responsible for making the Boom such an unprecedented success in international literary circles? This much is agreed upon: in roughly one decade, Latin American fiction emerged from obscurity in Europe and the United States to become a major critical and commercial phenomenon. International recognition had already been bestowed upon Latin American poets such as Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Cobb 76 Mistral, and César Vallejo earlier in the twentieth century while fiction writers remained curiously neglected in what Pascale Casanova has called the “World Republic of Letters.” With the Boom in the early 1960s, however, for the first time in history, Latin American writers were widely translated, published, and awarded the most prestigious literary prizes on the planet. At the risk of oversimplifying matters, there are essentially two strands of thought regarding the Boom’s overwhelming critical and commercial success. There are its supporters, who believe that Boom novels flourished because of the writers’ full embrace of cosmopolitan modernism, or what Goethe called Weltliteratur, a concept of literature as a space existing outside national or linguistic boundaries. -

Today, we will be discussing our 1977 recording with Colombian Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez, or Gabo, as some of us like to call him (which is how we Colombians like to call this monumental author). TGG: We all like to call him el Gabo, in Latin America. He’s ours. CG: So García Márquez was born in Aracataca, Colombia in 1928. He is the author of more than ten novels and novellas, including Cien años de soledad, One Hundred Years of Solitud from 1967, El otoño del patriarca, The Autumn of the Patriarch, from 1975, and El amor en los tiempos del cólera, Love in the Time of Cholera from 1985. -

Page | 1 Abstract Magical Realism is a genre of fiction in which elements blend with the real world. Magical Realism supposedly began in 1935 with its golden age occurring between 1940 and 1950. The term magical realism described contemporary fiction, usually associated with Latin America, whose narrative blends magical or fantastical elements with reality. Magical Realism is the writing of Spanish and Latin American authors. Two people have been credited for coining the term magical realism, Dudly Fitts and Franz Roh. ********* Author: Mr. K. Muthu Murugan Magical Realism is known for changing the way in which one thinks. Instead of seeing the ordinary and mundane, the magical realism brings a spark of life to the imagination, which turn excites the mind of the readers. Magical Realism is an amalgamation of realism and fantasy. It is also known for showing a different view point on life and the way in which people think or Page | 2 act. It does not use dream motifs, nor does it create false words. Magical Realism is unlike other writing style that try to change or dominate the existing seemed to be forced on people and in turn demand attention and gratification. The extraordinary in magical realism is rarely presented in the form of a dream or a psychological experience because doing so takes the magic out of recognizable material reality and placed it into the little understood world of the imagination. -

LT 375 BARCELONA AND THE LATIN AMERICAN LITERARY BOOM IES Abroad Barcelona DESCRIPTION: This course provides an introduction to one of the fundamental chapters of twentieth century literature: the generation known as the Latin American “boom”. Through the work of its most notable writers —Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa and José Donoso, among others— the course will study the literary works that made the reputation of Latin American literature, as well as the key role played by Barcelona in its emergence and diffusion. CREDITS: 3 credits CONTACT HOURS: 45 hours LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: Spanish PREREQUISITES: None METHOD OF PRESENTATION: Lectures Class discussions Student presentations Video screenings of interviews Walks and visits Critical reading and discussions of novels and short‐stories REQUIRED WORK AND FORM OF ASSESSMENT: Class participation (20%); Term paper outline (5%); Term paper final draft (25%); Oral presentation in Spanish (10%); Mid‐term exam (20%); Final exam (20%) Students will choose any text from the Latin American authors discussed in class, and present their work in progress at three different stages: a one or two page outline due on session 10, an oral presentation on sessions 18‐19, and an 1800‐word term paper due on session 23. The work will be written in Spanish. Class participation is expected to stimulate and enrich class discussion; this grade will take into account every aspect of the student’s performance, including preparation, contributions, effort and attentiveness. Midterm and final exams will be essay format, asking students to read closely, analyze, and interpret a particular passage of one of the texts studied. -

Sweet Washington, DC 2012 Silence Through Representation: La Malinche as Christian, Mistress and Conquistadora Colleen A. Sweet, Ph.D. Director: Mario A. Ortiz, Ph.D. La Malinche played a major role in the Mexican Conquest. She is known as both mistress and translator of Hernán Cortés. In Mexican history, her name is associated with betrayal. The year 1992 was pivotal in the discourse concerning the encounter between Europe and the Americas. Postcolonial studies stressed the need to recover the long-silenced voice of the subaltern characters of the Conquest. This search for an indigenous perspective inspired a new body of artistic works concerning Malinche. In this dissertation I examine the film La otra conquista (Salvador Carrasco, 1998), the novel Malinche (Laura Esquivel, 2006), and the play La Malinche (Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda, 2000). These works address three major roles associated with the representation of Malinche: as convert to Christianity, as mistress to Cortés, and as collaborator in the events of the Conquest. The works under study posit new explorations into the role of both female and indigenous figures in the discourse of the Conquest of Mexico. In La otra conquista, Carrasco removes Malinche from the historical record and replaces her with a revisionist figure. -

Selling a Feeling: New Approaches Toward Recent Gay Chicano Authors and Their Audience Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Douglas Paul William Bush, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Ignacio Corona, Advisor Frederick Luis Aldama Fernando Unzueta Copyright by Douglas Paul William Bush 2013 Abstract Gay Chicano authors have been criticized for not forming the same type of strong literary identity and community as their Chicana feminist counterparts, a counterpublic that has given voice not only to themselves as authors, but also to countless readers who see themselves reflected in their texts. One of the strengths of the Chicana feminist movement is that they have not only produced their own works, but have made sense of them as well, creating a female-to-female tradition that was previously lacking. Instead of merely reiterating that gay Chicano authors have not formed this community and common identity, this dissertation instead turns the conversation toward the reader. Specifically, I move from how authors make sense of their texts and form community, to how readers may make sense of texts, and finally, to how readers form community. I limit this conversation to three authors in particular—Alex Espinoza, Rigoberto González, and Manuel Muñoz— whom I label the second generation of gay Chicano writers. In González, I combine the cognitive study of empathy and sympathy to examine how he constructs affective planes that pull the reader into feeling for and with the characters that he draws. -

UNIVERSITY OF MAURITIUS RESEARCH JOURNAL – Volume 21 – 2015 University of Mauritius, Réduit, Mauritius Isabel Allende: Carnalismo and Female Identity S Kotiah Department of English Studies Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities University of Mauritius Reduit E-mail: [email protected] Paper accepted on 27 April 2015 Abstract This article proposes a comparative study of two novels, The House of the Spirits (1982) and Portrait in Sepia (2000) by Chilean author, Isabel Allende. In an attempt to represent various facets of Latin American female identity, this article uses carnalismo as recurring trope while reinstating the particular marginalized positions of these women as a subversive discourse altogether. These women do not rewrite, refashion or expropriate stories merely to satisfy some game-playing or some totalizing impulse. Instead, they juxtapose what we think we know of the past with alternative representations. The running argument in the article is therefore based on a celebration of subversive forms of matriarchy that rule untraditional domestic spaces. Furthermore, different storytelling formulations by the same author reflect certain trends in contemporary narrative, namely the ways in which narratives can turn one`s attention away from an aesthetic past towards a more broadly conceived sense of history as textually mediated and constructed. To this end, theoretical frameworks of carnalismo suggest a desire to attract attention to unequal power relations and a consequent desire to celebrate these women. Eduardo Galeano – ¡Presente!
Eduardo Galeano – ¡Presente! Eduardo Galeano, the world-renowned leftist Uruguayan journalist and writer made famous with the publication in 1971 of his book The Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent, died today at the age of 74 in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he lived. Long admired as a journalist, with his three-volume Memory of Fire in 1982, Galeano also became known as a writer of non-fiction prose who might be compared to writers of fiction such as Gabriel García Márquez, author of the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude or Isabel Allende who wrote House of the Spirits. Like their novels, his trilogy captures the real spirit of Latin America’s magical history. Born Eduardo Germán María Hughes Galeano in Montevideo on September 3, 1940, Galeano began his career as a journalist in the early 1960s working as a correspondent for Sol and then as an editor for Marcha, which published such writers as Mario Vargas Llosa and Mario Benedetti. When a rightwing military coup took power in Uruguay in 1973, Galeano was jailed and subsequently went into exile, first in Argentina, where he edited Crisis, and then in Spain where he wrote his trilogy Memory of Fire (Genesis, Faces and Masks, and Century of the Wind). Memory of Fire mixed history and journalism in vignettes and biographical sketches written in a creative prose style that reminded American readers of John Dos Passos’ 1930s classic U.SA. triology (The 42nd Parallel, 1919, and The Big Money). Open Veins of Latin America was a detailed, systematic, and sustained attack on European and U.S. -

ISSN 1056-3970 Reviewed by Neelam Jabeen1 The title of the book, Sheherazade’s Daughters, serves as a metaphor for Barbara Bennett as she looks at the power the stories of the female authors have, to bring a change, just Like Sheherazade of Thousand and One Nights. Bennett has a PhD in American literature and is a teacher of contemporary literature in North Carolina University and has authored four books before this. Bennett has also devoted her time to wildlife conservation. In Scheherazade’s Daughters Bennett looks at the works of selected female authors to see how their works are instrumental in creating an ecofeminist consciousness among the readers at large. -

Calderón, Chair This dissertation studies the socio-cultural connections of the United States and Mexico’s Pan-African selected twentieth- and twenty-first century sites of struggle through literature, film, and music. Novels and movies such as La negra Angustias (1948/1950), Imitation of Life (1933/1959), Angelitos negros (1948/1970), Como agua para chocolate saga (1989, 2016, 2017), and film (1992), as well as music of racial activism by Mexican and Afro-Latino artists such as Negro José and Afro-Chicano band Third Root, are all key elements of my project to study the formation and understanding what of Mexico’s Tercera Raíz entails historically, politically, and culturally. I focus my study on the development of black racial consciousness in twentieth-century Mexican cultural life, and I consequently explore the manner in which Mexican writers, filmmakers and artists have managed the relationship between Afro-Mexicans and majority ii populations of white and mestizo Mexicans, as well as the racial bridge existent between the United States’ black history, and Mexico’s Third Root. -
