Issue 1(5)’2020 UDC 821.133.1 DOI: 10.26565/2521-6481-2020-5-01 THE IDENTITY CRISIS IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBALIZATION IN THE NOVEL BY OLGA TOKARCZUK “FLIGHTS” © Kateryna BUTSKA Master in Slavic Philology PhD student at the Department of Comparative Literature Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine 4 Mykhaila Hrushevskoho, Kyiv, 02000, UKRAINE e-mail: [email protected] ORCID: 0000-0002-0493-9643 Abstract This article considers the issue of the identity crisis in the context of globalization, represented in the novel Flights by Olga Tokarczuk, a Nobel Prize laureate and one of the best-selling Polish writers of our time. The artistic world of the novel reveals key features of globalization such as increasing global mobility, intensifying migrations, the dissipation of national borders, and the deactualization of national memory. O. Tokarczuk portrays an original type of a character acting in such conditions – a modern nomad that can be an emigrant, a refugee, a traveler, or a homeless person. This paper focuses on the correlation between memory collapse and identity crisis depicted in several stories from the novel. It mainly considers the philosophical aspect of the issue, namely, people’s fear of death and desire for immortality expressed through their propensity for perpetual motion and rejection of individual and national memory. The topic of plastination (a method of body preservation), deeply elaborated throughout the novel, is examined in the context of interdependency between human’s body and identity. ©Butska K., 2020 This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0 Butska K.     Acta Poloniae Historica 114, 2016 PL ISSN 0001–6829 Aleksander Łupienko Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences MILITARY ASPECTS IN THE SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT OF POLISH CITIES IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY* Abstract Military issues were deemed vital in the European politics of the nineteenth century. The aim of this article is to trace the most important implications of the ‘military bias’ of state authorities in the border region between the three empires (Germany, Russia and Austria – later the Austro-Hungarian Empire) which occupied the Central and Eastern part of the continent. Military authorities sometimes exercised a particularly strong infl uence upon urban policy. The two major issues addressed in this article are the fortifi cations (their creation, strengthening, and spatial development) which infl uenced urban sprawl – though perhaps not so much as is maintained in the scholarly literature – and the development of railways. The directions and tracks chosen for the railways were also infl uenced by the military plans, which in turn often differed much from the visions of the urban offi cials who made up the administration of the city. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT: This dissertation examines the interconnection between history, national identity and politics in Eastern and Southern Ukraine (with special reference to the Donbass, Odessa oblast and the Republic of Crimea). The study comprises three distinct parts: the first section (three chapters) explores the history of the region from the beginning of significant settlement in the 18th. century to the onset of the Perestroika reforms. The second part of the study (Chapter Four) considers how intermarriage as well as other demographic forces have informed the regional identity. Currently, much of the population of the region identifies as both Ukrainian and Russian; this identification is generally weak and unstable. This informs popular attitudes towards such key questions as Ukraine's statehood and its relations with Russia.
