The species is associated with Nymphaeaceae (both Nymphaea and Nuphar species). The species was not uncommon in Belgium until 1950, afterwards a notable decline was seen in the number of known records and from 1950 onwards only five records are known. A survey was carried out to assess the present status and distribution of the species in Belgium. 47 sites in the north of Belgium with stable populations of Nymphaeaceae were checked for the presence of D. crassipes . Of these sampled sites D. crassipes was present at 35 (74,5%) and thus the species seems currently not as rare as recent records indicated. This species was encountered for the first time in the province Limburg. Furthermore we present the first records of D. crassipes on non-indigenous water-lilies ( Nymphaea cultivars). Insect Herbivores Associated with Nymphaea Mexicana (Nymphaeaceae) in Southern United States: Potential Biological Control Agents for South Africa
Insect herbivores associated with Nymphaea mexicana (Nymphaeaceae) in southern United States: potential biological control agents for South Africa Megan K. Reid1,*, Julie A. Coetzee2, Martin P. Reid6 Abstract Nymphaea mexicana Zuccarini (Nymphaeaceae) (Mexican waterlily) is an emergent floating-leaved aquatic plant from the southeastern USA that is invasive in South Africa. In invaded waterbodies this plant restricts water movement, increases siltation, decreases recreational activities, and can deplete water oxygen levels, which in turn negatively impacts aquatic fauna. Currently there are no chemical, mechanical, or biological control programs in place for N. mexicana in South Africa, but the sustainability of biological control makes this the most desirable option. Field surveys for potential biological control agents were conducted in the native range ofN. mexicana in Florida, Louisiana, and Texas from Aug to Oct 2018. Leaves, stems, flowers, and roots of N. mexicana were searched for insect herbivores by hand and using Berlese funnels. Insects were prioritized for use as biological control agents by considering the extent and type of feeding damage, field host range, and incidence (percentage of sites in which each species was found). In total, 15 confirmed species were found feeding on N. mexicana, and some taxa were identified only to family level. Incidence coverage estimator mean, MMRuns, Chao 2 mean, and Chao 2 upper 95% CI species accumulation estimators predicted that between 2 and 5 species were missed during the surveys. Based on field observations,Bagous americanus LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and Megamelus toddi Beamer (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) were prioritized. -

AN ANNOTATED LIST OF NEARCTIC DONACIINAE (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE): THE GENERIC CLASSIFICATION AND TYPE SPECIMENS OF THE NEW WORLD SPECIES. BY INGOLF S. ASKEVOLD Department of Entomology, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R3T 2N21 INTRODUCTION During systematic revision of Nearctic donaciines, the majority of type specimens were examined. Some lectotype and neotype designations, made where necessary in the context of revisions of genera (Plateumaris Thomson and Neohaemonia Sz6kessy) or solution of specific taxonomic problems, were detailed elsewhere (Askevold 1987a,b, 1988, 1990, 1991). Some taxonomic problems remain despite relatively recent treatment by Marx (1957) of Donacia F. (sensu lato). I indicated earlier that Donacia is repre- sented in North America by 10 species in Donacia (s. str.), and 21 described species in Donacia (Donaciomima) Medvedev, but details were not given then (Askevold 1990). The purpose of the present paper is to detail remaining lectotype designations among Nearctic members of the genus Donacia F., to list the Nearctic members of Donaciinae, and to detail relevant tax- onomic references and information (i.e., synonymies, taxonomic changes since prior authors, and data about type specimens). Schaeffer (1919, 1925) indicated only if he based his species on a type and allotype, but not that there were also many paratypes; paratype information is included insofar as such specimens have been found.
