(Please use the above contact details, for further information regarding any queries) Date: 16-Jul-20 Tina’s Lace History Tina began making lace in 1992 with the help of members of Mole Valley who lent her a pillow & bobbins, and a member who gave her individual lessons at home - teaching her the basics of lacemaking. This interest was all sparked following a visit to the ‘Stitch Show’ at Islington Business centre and the ‘having a go pillow’ on the Lace Guild Stand. Understanding the principles of Torchon Lace, Tina began attending twice yearly, two day workshops at Mole Valley Lacemakers, then in Leatherhead, with Lace Teachers Kate Riley, Kath King, and others. It was at this time that Tina began her love for Bedfordshire lace and whilst on these workshops Tina heard about Bradwell Abbey (Milton Keynes) and began attending those workshops to extend her Bedfordshire lace, with Kath, and completed a raised and rolled Lace Collar. She was then tempted to have a go at Honiton Lace and during a weekend with Christine Hawkens, Tina heard about Summer School at York. This was heaven, five days of lace making! Over the years of attending the Summer School, Tina challenged herself to make a Raised & Rolled Honiton Lace fan, which took 10yrs of summer light to complete, whilst doing many other lace and embroidery projects. Tina has a natural enthusiasm for Lace and fed her appetite for different laces by attending;- . weekend workshops at Battle with Sandra Langworthy (Milanese), one day workshops with Pat Perryman (Honiton) & Patricia Read (Milanese) - Mayford lace makers, and two day workshop with Ingrid de Court at Knuston Hall (Russian). Along the way Tina attended St Ives, Knuston Hall, and Dillington workshops with Patricia Bury, where over the following 15yrs Tina was able to extend her knowledge of the above laces. During that time she also learnt; Idrija, Chrysanthemum, & Russian, and finally went on to Flanders & Binche laces. In recent years Tina has participated in workshops with Clare Allen for Hinojosa and been lucky to attend workshops with Anne-Marie Verbeke-Billiet from Brugge in Leatherhead and Swindon, further developing her knowledge of the Continental laces, in Rosaline Perle & Duchesse/Withof. Tina has currently completed three Masks in Idija/Duchesse/Withof, with Anne Marie, whilst working Fuchsia & Sweet-Pea patterns in Flanders, and a Withof Lace Belt with Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof. Tina started her teaching experience in a small way by helping others at meetings and giving the odd weekend workshop at Mole Valley Lacemakers. Helping beginners to get started in the same manner in which she began making lace, which was to always learn the techniques of each lace type from basics. She teaches private groups/workshops at home, a fortnightly class at Addlestone, a monthly class near Gatwick, and is currently developing weekly classes for Surrey Adult Learning in Guildford as well as summer schools & taster days. Tina has also been working with Pinewood Film Studios, over a four month period, to provide;- technical support, background knowledge, as well as teaching a number of actors the rudiments of making lace, for a new TV-series. In Nov’19 she has been invited to hold a Russian & Chrysanthemum lace workshop for the Upper Beeding group in West Sussex and has been lined-up to give talks at other lace groups this Year. Tina wants to spread her wings to help keep the craft alive and give something back to the lace making family, by holding more workshops and classes for the experienced that would like to learn more and anyone thinking about taking up lace as a calming/therapeutic hobby whilst continuing her own development, as there is always some new technique to learn and pass on to others. Love the challenges of adding colour & adapting designs for modern lacemakers. Date: 16-Jul-20 .

  • Lace Classification System
LACE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM © Rosemary Shepherd 2003 Powerhouse Museum, Sydney © Rosemary Shepherd 2003 Powerhouse Museum, Sydney LACE - DEFINITION AND CLASSIFICATION Introduction When I came to the Museum in 1983 most of the lace collection had no documentation beyond its original brief entry in the stock books. Because there had been so little work done on the lace it seemed an ideal opportunity to give serious thought to its exact nature and provide not only a definition but also a theoretical framework for its documentation in the form of a classification system. This seemed both possible and desirable given the discrete nature of the lace collection and the complex and varied techniques it encompassed. Furthermore, a theoretical framework would both simplify and clarify the documentation process. In the museum context a classification system is essentially a tool for understanding a particular subject or collecting area. A definition of that subject is needed before decisions can be made about how to classify the objects within it. Everyone thinks they know what lace is, but describing it unambiguously is not so easy. Those who make lace assume that any fabric produced using a lacemaking technique is automatically lace, but such techniques are used in many interesting contemporary textiles that are too dense to be called lace. On the other hand, those who are not makers invariably have a very fixed idea of lace based on its traditional forms, regardless of the way it is made. The definition of lace as a decorative openwork fabric in which the pattern of spaces is as important as the solid areas1 is not only appropriate for historic and traditional lace, but also takes into account current and future developments in technique and expression.
