    Ayşe Şirin Okyayuz, Bilkent University Power, society and AVT in Turkey: an overview Abstract: The article relates the findings of an ongoing research project that encompasses several decades of AVT in Turkey. Drawing a matrix of relations and interactions between types of AVT (i.e. subtitling, dubbing, remakes, adaptations) and practices (i.e. censoring, choice of AV products) and the political as well as social realities and aspirations of certain periods, the aim is to provide a historical trajectory of AVT to exemplify the specific use of certain types of AVT in line with societal and political aspirations and developments. Lim- ited by the length of an article and the inability to provide AV material in printed format, the article provides an overview of the major eras of AVT and the political and societal shifts that necessitated or brought about changes to the AVT scene in the decades studied. 1. Introduction The discussion of issues such as the use of different types of AVT for specific purposes (i.e. localized adaptations of foreign AV products for building a national identity, dubbing with the standard dialect to support language standardization and learning, providing information flow and familiarity with foreign cultures through subtitling), social and political policies that influence AVT (i.e. tax re- ductions in films imports, foreign/domestic productions, audience viewing rates, censorship organs), power play (i.e. state led AV sector, elitist, ideological, and populist AV productions and translations), actors (i.e. governments, foreign firms and agreements) and technologies (i.e. dubbing, subtitling) are all of interest to the AVT researcher.

This thesis explores the depths of this perplexity by looking at the cultural differences in post-1990s horror films from three countries: the United States, Japan, and Italy. Scholarship on women in horror films continues to focus on the feminist sensitivities, without the slightest regard for possible cultural specificities, within the horror genre. This, in turn, often collapses the study of women in horror films into a transnational genre, thereby contributing to the perception of a dominant global cinema. Therefore, it is the aim of the author to look at three culturally-specific subgenres of the horror film to explore their differences and similarities.

As the variety of media exhibition platforms expands and as discourse about films permeates a greater number of communication media, the use of generic terms has never been more multiform or observable. Fundamental problems in the very conception of film genre have yet to be addressed adequately, and film genre study has carried on despite its untenable theoretical footing. Synthesizing pragmatic genre theory, constructivist film theory, Bourdieusian fan studies, and rhetorical genre studies, the dissertation aims to work through the radical implications of pragmatic genre theory and account for genres role in interpretation, evaluation, and rhetorical framing as part of broader, recurring social activities. This model rejects textualist and realist foundations for film genre; only pragmatic genre use can serve as a foundation for understanding film genres. From this perspective, the concept of genre is reconstructed according to its interpretive and rhetorical functions rather than a priori assumptions about the text or transtextual structures.

D. Cornell University 2014 ABSTRACT: This dissertation lays the initial groundwork for theorizing closet film as a literary genre. Though closet drama––poetry written in playscript form––has received attention from a wide variety of critics in literary, performance and cultural studies, no such body of work exists for thinking about closet film––fiction written in the form of the screenplay. Aside from the self-published work of independent scholar Quimby Melton––with whom I have collaborated on his ongoing project to form an online bibliography of what he terms the closet screenplay–– there exists quite literally no field of study, nor any initial attempt to theorize the limits and potentialities of the genre. This project offers a theorization of closet film informed by the philosophy of Giorgio Agamben, especially his focus on potentiality, which I argue helps describe closet film’s tenuous stance toward production––closet film is a genre organized around the potential-not-to produce. Studying closet film also helps us rewrite the boundaries of what is considered possible in terms of literary and visual realism, and the “closet” itself constitutes an excellent new paradigm for understanding the space between film and the novel, opening up discussions of texts that have been largely overlooked or marginalized and enabling us to encounter old ones afresh.

Canfield C Dean of the School of Graduate Studies THE HOLLYWOOD NOVEL: AN AMERICAN LITERARY GENRE An abstract of a disseration by Nancy Brooker-Bowers September 1983 Drake University Advisor: Richard Abel The Hollywood Novel is an American regional fiction genre that treats characters working in the film industry either in Hollywood or with a Hollywood production company on location. Although pre-Hollywood film novels set in the eastern filmmaking capitals flourished as early as 1912, the Hollywood Novel per se first appeared in 1916, after the film companies had nearly completed their move to Hollywood. The genre grew up and developed with the Hollywood film industry, mirroring the rise of powerful moguls, the decline of the studio system, and the advent of location shooting, in the United States and abroad, as well as influential events, pUblic concerns, and fads of the times. From 1916-1963, the genre intersected with other popular literature, creating eight sub-genres of novels: historical, cornie-epistolary, detective, and semi-pornographic--as deter­ mined by Carolyn See in 1963--as well as romances, adolescent fiction, religious tracts, and romans a clef. Many novels within the sub-genres were penned by persons involved with filmmaking.

The Production Code was written in 1929 by Martin J. Quigley, an influential editor and publisher of motion picture trade periodicals, and Reverend Daniel A. Lord, a Jesuit advisor to Hollywood filmmakers. Officially accepted in 1930 by the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), the precursor organization to the MPAA, the Production Code presented guidelines governing American movie production. The five hundred titles selected were chosen by the staff of the library’s Special Collections Department, with advice from film historian Leonard J. Leff. Detailed Description: Hollywood and the Production Code On July 15, 1934, with considerable fanfare and high hopes for an extended engagement, the Production Code Administration (PCA) officially opened for business. During the interim, a passage spanning the vaunted Golden Age of Hollywood and the less-glimmering sunset of the studio system, the PCA vetted, censored, and sealed virtually every Hollywood movie released in the American marketplace.
