Precisely because of its success, the movement now is being called to shore up the status quo. Revisiting some radical roots suggests ways that the food movement can end hunger in America, rather than becoming just another band-aid alleviating poverty. It’s no accident that the food movement grew widely after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. With the criminalization of dissent, it became increasingly difficult to confront corporate capitalism through other politics. As Michael Pollan has noted, Food is the place in daily life where corporatization can be most vividly felt… By the same token, food offers us one of the shortest, most appealing paths out of the corporate labyrinth. Under the Bush regime, environmentalists, social justice campaigners, anti-capitalists, and organic foodies found a government, media, and general public far less responsive than a decade before. Membership of umbrella groups like the Community Food Security Coalition swelled, with a proliferation of food organizations, consultants, academics, and activist groups throughout the US. Part of the success of the movement has been its largely nonsectarian, big-tent approach, committed to the idea that food should be available to all, and that, above all, food is a domain in which something can and ought swiftly to be done. In the 1910s-20s, the city experienced substantial black immigration but became in the process the most residentially segregated of all major US cities. During the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, long-simmering frustration and anger led many lower-class blacks to the culturally attractive, militant Black Panther Party. Thus, long before Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition, made famous in the 1980s, or Barack Obama's historic presidential campaigns more recently, the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party (ILPBB) laid much of the groundwork for nontraditional grassroots political activism. The principal architect was a charismatic, marginally educated 20-year-old named Fred Hampton, tragically and brutally murdered by the Chicago police in December 1969 as part of an FBI- backed counter-intelligence program against what it considered subversive political groups. Among other things, Williams (Kentucky) "demonstrates how the ILPBB's community organizing methods and revolutionary self-defense ideology significantly influenced Chicago's machine politics, grassroots organizing, racial coalitions, and political behavior."     187 The Feminist Leadership of Ericka Huggins in the Black Panther Party Mary Phillips ABSTRACT Born on January 5, 1948, in Washington, D.C., Ericka Huggins was an important figure in the Black Panther Party (BPP) as well as a key Black Power era activist. A high-ranking member of the BPP, she served on the organization’s Central Committee. As a writer, poet, educator, former editor of the Black Panther and Director of the Oakland Community School, Huggins was vital to the BPP as an organizer and intellectual. This essay provides an in-depth analysis of Huggins’s feminist theory, her work as a revolutionary educator, and the impact of her incarceration on the BPP as a member of the New Haven 14. I argue that Huggins’s experiences serve as an example of progressive gender politics in the BPP. Until recently Black women’s activism has been largely neglected in BPP scholarship and this work contributes to the emerging scholarship on Black women in the most widely known organization of the Black Power Movement. This essay differs from previous interpretations on Ericka Huggins and the BPP by showcasing her voice on the intersections of Black Power and Black feminist politics in the BPP. To reclaim the social welfare contribution of the Black Panther Party, this paper examines the Free Breakfast for Schoolchildren Program and discusses its relevance to contemporary social work. Key aspects of the Free Breakfast Program are reviewed, including the historical context of the formation of the Black Panther Party and the breakfast program’s mission and funding, as well as reactions to the program.

Utilizing a range of primary and secondary sources such as autobiographies of former Black Panther Party members, newspaper articles, and general studies of the organization, it is contended that domestically-insulated interactions were as central to the Black Panther Party’s political practices as members’ more overt organizational

Black Panther Party: 1966-1982 Abstract The Black Panther party was founded in Oakland, California, in 1966. From its beginnings as a local, community organization with a handful of members, it expanded into a national and international party. By 1980, however, the Black Panther party was once again mainly an Oakland-based organization, with no more than fifty active members. In 1982, the party came to an official end. Despite itselativ r ely short history, its modest membership, and its general eschewing of electoral politics, the Black Panther party was arguably the best known and most controversial of the black militant political organizations of the 1960s, with a legacy that continues to this day.
