In the 1910s-20s, the city experienced substantial black immigration but became in the process the most residentially segregated of all major US cities. During the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, long-simmering frustration and anger led many lower-class blacks to the culturally attractive, militant Black Panther Party. Thus, long before Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition, made famous in the 1980s, or Barack Obama's historic presidential campaigns more recently, the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party (ILPBB) laid much of the groundwork for nontraditional grassroots political activism. The principal architect was a charismatic, marginally educated 20-year-old named Fred Hampton, tragically and brutally murdered by the Chicago police in December 1969 as part of an FBI- backed counter-intelligence program against what it considered subversive political groups. Among other things, Williams (Kentucky) "demonstrates how the ILPBB's community organizing methods and revolutionary self-defense ideology significantly influenced Chicago's machine politics, grassroots organizing, racial coalitions, and political behavior." Williams incorporates previously sealed secret Chicago police files and numerous oral histories. The Lonnie Mclucas Trial and Visitors from Across the Eastern Seaboard Gathered to Protest the Treatment of Black Panthers in America
: The Black Panthers in Court On May I, 19 70, a massive demonstration was held on The Black Panthers in Court: 5 the New Haven Green. University students, townspeople The Lonnie McLucas Trial and visitors from across the Eastern Seaboard gathered to protest the treatment of Black Panthers in America. Just on the northern edge of the Green sat the Superior Court building where Bobby Seale and seven other Pan thers were to be tried for the murder of Alex Rackley. In order to sift out the various issues raised by the prose cutions and the demonstration, and to explore how members of the Yale community ought to relate to these trials on its doorstep, several students organized teach ins during the week prior to the demonstration. Among those faculty members and students who agreed to parti cipate on such short notice were Professors Thomas 1. Emerson and Charles A. Reich of the Yale Law School and J. Otis Cochran, a third-year law student and presi dent of the Black American Law Students Association. They have been kind enough to allow Law and Social Action to share with our readers the thoughts on the meaning and impact of political trials which they shared with the Yale community at that time. Inspired by the teach-ins and, in particular, by Mr. Emerson's remarks, Law and Social Action decided to interview people who played leading roles in the drama that unfulded around the Lonnie McLucas trial. We spoke with Lonnie McLucas, several jurors, defense at torneys, some of the organizers of the demonstrations that took place on May Day and throughout the sum mer, and several reporters who covered the trial. -

| 1 Tuesday, January 29, 2019 Empowering a New Generation From Black Panther and convict to writer, poet, producer, college professor, Academy Award nominee, and youth advocate, Jamal Joseph’s life has taken a circuitous path to the present. His is a story of perennial social activism, advancing lessons from his Black Panther days to empower a new generation. Excuse Me, Young Brother, I Just Did In the late 1960s, Eddie Joseph was a high school honor student, slated to graduate early and begin college. That path took a detour. A long one. Impassioned to resolve the social, economic, and political wrongs he saw in his Bronx community and the nation, 15-year-old Eddie was drawn to the ideology of the Black Panther Party, which was just gaining a national presence. He remembers riding the subway to the Panther office in Harlem with two friends to offer his services, enraged by the recent assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was ready to fight, even kill if necessary, to serve the cause. At the Panther office, a leader called the earnest teen up front. As Joseph stood by his side, the leader pulled open a desk drawer and reached far into it. Joseph’s heart pounded. He was prepared to be handed a gun—the power for social change. Instead, he was handed a stack of books, such as The Autobiography of Malcolm X and The Wretched of the Earth, Frantz Fanon’s 1961 work on the cultural foundations of social movements. Taken aback, Joseph said, “Excuse me, brother, I thought you were going to arm me.” The Panther’s reply: “Excuse me, young brother, I just did.” By 16, Eddie—now called Jamal—learned that the militant group the FBI declared to be “the greatest threat to America” was a multifaceted entity. -

ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: SLAVE SHIPS, SHAMROCKS, AND SHACKLES: TRANSATLANTIC CONNECTIONS IN BLACK AMERICAN AND NORTHERN IRISH WOMEN’S REVOLUTIONARY AUTO/BIOGRAPHICAL WRITING, 1960S-1990S Amy L. Washburn, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Deborah S. Rosenfelt Department of Women’s Studies This dissertation explores revolutionary women’s contributions to the anti-colonial civil rights movements of the United States and Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. I connect the work of Black American and Northern Irish revolutionary women leaders/writers involved in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Black Panther Party (BPP), Black Liberation Army (BLA), the Republic for New Afrika (RNA), the Soledad Brothers’ Defense Committee, the Communist Party- USA (Che Lumumba Club), the Jericho Movement, People’s Democracy (PD), the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA), the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP), the National H-Block/ Armagh Committee, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), Women Against Imperialism (WAI), and/or Sinn Féin (SF), among others by examining their leadership roles, individual voices, and cultural productions. This project analyses political communiqués/ petitions, news coverage, prison files, personal letters, poetry and short prose, and memoirs of revolutionary Black American and Northern Irish women, all of whom were targeted, arrested, and imprisoned for their political activities. I highlight the personal correspondence, auto/biographical narratives, and poetry of the following key leaders/writers: Angela Y. Davis and Bernadette Devlin McAliskey; Assata Shakur and Margaretta D’Arcy; Ericka Huggins and Roseleen Walsh; Afeni Shakur-Davis, Joan Bird, Safiya Bukhari, and Martina Anderson, Ella O’Dwyer, and Mairéad Farrell. -
The 5 International Black Panther Film Festival Comes
THE 5th INTERNATIONAL BLACK PANTHER FILM FESTIVAL COMES TO PHILADELPHIA By Dr. Yvonne King In 1966, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, two young African American men started the Black Panther Party, an organization that inspired youth to articulate the wants and beliefs of the black community through the group’s Ten Point Platform and Program; create and sustain programs that served the people’s needs; and defy a government that failed to meet those needs. For this they were harassed, brutalized, wrongfully accused and imprisoned, and even killed. Many today, particularly our youth, do not know the stories told by and about the extraordinary Black Panthers of that tremendously defiant period in this country’s history. Fortunately, two former Black Panthers – Kathleen Cleaver and Jamal Joseph – founded the International Black Panther Film Festival (IBPFF) in 2000 to “capture the imagination of a new generation.” Since their first Festival in Harlem, in association with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the IBPFF has held annual Film Fests in different cities drawing youth, intellectuals, activists and artists of different age groups and races. The IBPFF, in association with Art Sanctuary, will come to the Church of the Advocate at 18th and Diamond Streets, Philadelphia, on Sunday, February 20, 2005, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. In addition to three films with interviews of Assata Shakur, in exile in Cuba and Philadelphia Panthers on the 1970 police raids here, there will be 5 “shorts” featuring members of the Central Committee, the New York 21, other political prisoners – including Mumia Abu Jamal and Russell Shoats that will play repeatedly. -

the blue afterwards Felix Shafer November 25, 2010 2 You've gone past us now. beloved comrade: north american revolutionary and political prisoner My sister and friend of these 40 years, it's over Marilyn Buck gone through the wire out into the last whirlwind. With time's increasing distance from her moment of death on the afternoon of August 3, 2010, at home in Brooklyn New York, the more that I have felt impelled to write a cohesive essay about Marilyn, the less possible such a project has become. She died at 62 years of age, surrounded by people who loved and still love her truly. She died just twenty days after being released from Carswell federal prison in Texas. Marilyn lived nearly 30 years behind bars. It was the determined effort of Soffiyah Elijah, her attorney and close friend of more than a quarter century that got her out of that prison system at all. Her loss leaves a wound that insists she must be more than a memory and still so much more than a name circulating in the bluest afterwards. If writing is one way of holding on to Marilyn, it also ramifies a crazed loneliness. Shadows lie down in unsayable places. I'm a minor player in the story who wants to be scribbling side by side with her in a cafe or perched together overlooking the Hudson from a side road along the Palisades. This work of mourning is fragmentary, impossible, subjective, politically unofficial, lovingly biased, flush with anxieties over (mis)representation, hopefully evocative of some of the 'multitude' of Marilyns contained within her soul, strange and curiously punctuated by shifts into reverie and poetic time.
