ANATHEMAS AND FR. JOHN SHAW By Vladimir Moss The Orthodox world was shocked when, in 1965, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras “lifted the anathemas” on their churches. Metropolitan Philaret led the True Orthodox in protesting that this simply could not be done. The anathemas on the Filioque and other Papist heresies were eternally valid, for falsehood remains falsehood for ever; and as long as the Papists confessed these heresies, they fell under the anathemas. The essential point is this: if an anathema expresses truth, and the bishops who pronounce it are true, then it has power “to the ages of ages”, and nobody can lift it, because it is pronounced not only by the earthly Church, but also by the Heavenly Church, in accordance with the word of the Lord: “Whatever ye [the apostles and their successors] shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven” (Matthew 18.18). However, following in the footsteps of Athenagoras, we now have a man who thinks he can lift anathemas: Fr. John Shaw. Or rather, Fr. John does not pretend to lift them (that would be a truly Herculean task for a mere priest!). He either (in the case of Patriarch Tikhon and the anathema on the Bolsheviks of 1918) says that a patriarch has lifted it, or (in the case of the ROCOR's anathema against ecumenism of 1983) does something even less plausible: he says it never really happened! The Anathema of 1918 Let us take the first case. On January 19, 1918 Patriarch Tikhon anathematised the Bolsheviks in the following words: “By the power given to Us by God, we forbid you to approach the Mysteries of Christ, we anathematise you, if only you bear Christian names and although by birth you belong to the Orthodox Church. -

Part 1 – Church Becomes Powerful Institution Evidence of Rome’s power grab • In 2nd century we see bishops over regions; people looked to them for guidance. • Around 195AD there was dispute over which day to celebrate Passover (14th Nissan vs. Sunday) • Polycarp said 14th Nissan, but now Victor (Bishop of Rome) liked Sunday. • A council was convened to decide, and they decided on Sunday. • But bishops of Asia continued the Passover on 14th Nissan. • Eusebius wrote what happened next: “Thereupon Victor, who presided over the church at Rome, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the parishes of all Asia, with the churches that agreed with them, as heterodox [heretics]; and he wrote letters and declared all the brethren there wholly excommunicate.” (Eus., Hist. eccl. 5.24.9) Everyone started looking to Rome to settle disputes • Rome was always ending up on the winning side in their handling of controversial topics. 1 • So through a combination of the fact that Rome was the most important city in the ancient world and its bishop was always right doctrinally then everyone started looking to Rome. • So Rome took that power and developed it into the Roman Catholic Church by the 600s. Church granted power to rule • Constantine gave the pope power to rule over Italy, Jerusalem, Constantinople and Alexandria. -

They are normally self-contained. Abjuration - renunciation, under oath, of heresy to the Christian faith, made by a Christian wishing to be reconciled with the Church. Accidie - term used in ascetical literature for spiritual sloth, boredom, and discouragement. Acolyte - a clerk in minor orders whose particular duty was the service of the altar. Advocate - lay protector and legal representative of a monastery. Advowson - the right of nominating or presenting a clergyman to a vacant living. Agistment - a Church rate, or tithe, charged on pasture land. Aisle - lateral division of the nave or chancel of a church. Alb - a full-length white linen garment, with sleeves and girdle, worn by the celebrant at mass under a chasuble. Almoner - officer of a monastery entrusted with dispensing alms to the poor and sick. Almonry - place from which alms were dispensed to the poor. Almuce - large cape, often with attached hood, of cloth turned down over the shoulders and lined with fur. Doctors of Divinity and canons wore it lined with gray fur. Cape was edged with little Ambulatory - aisle leading round an apse, usually encircling the choir of a church. Amice - a square of white linen, folded diagonally, worn by the celebrant priest, on the head or about the neck and shoulders. Anathema - condemnation of heretics, similar to major excommunication. It inflicts the penalty of complete exclusion from Christian society. -

GOEMAN Abstract Although often eclipsed by the giants of the Reformation, Desiderius Erasmus had a notable influence on the Reformation and the world that followed. Responsible for five editions of the Greek New Testament, his contributions include a renewed emphasis on the Greek over against the Latin of the day, as well as influence on subsequent Greek New Testaments and many translations, including Luther’s German Bible and the English King James Version. In God’s providence, Erasmus provided kindling for the fire of the Reformation.1 “ he name of Erasmus shall never perish.” Time has proved these words, spoken by one of his friends in the early 1500s, to be true. Today, Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam is recognized as a key figure—especially in regard to his influence on Bible translation and textual criticism. Although his fame has been Tsuperseded by the heroes of the Reformation, many of them were benefi- ciaries of his hard work. The Reformers owed him much. A CONFESSION OF FAITH Against Ecumenism From a Convention of Orthodox Clergymen and Monks Greece, April 2009 Those of us who by the Grace of God have been raised with the dogmas of piety and who follow in everything the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, believe that: The sole path to salvation of mankind1 is the faith in the Holy Trinity, the work and the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, and their continuance within His Body, the Holy Church. Christ is the only true Light;2 there are no other lights to illuminate us, nor any other names that can save us: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”3 All other beliefs, all religions that ignore and do not confess Christ “having come in the flesh,”4 are human creations and works of the evil one,5 which do not lead to the true knowledge of God and rebirth through divine Baptism, but instead, mislead men and lead them to perdition. As Christians who believe in the Holy Trinity, we do not have the same God as any of the religions, nor with the so-called monotheistic religions, Judaism and Mohammedanism, which do not believe in the Holy Trinity. For two thousand years, the one Church which Christ founded and the Holy Spirit has guided has remained stable and unshakeable in the salvific Truth that was taught by Christ, delivered by the Holy Apostles and preserved by the Holy Fathers. She did not buckle under the cruel persecutions by the Judeans initially or by idolaters later, during the first three centuries. -

St Peter’s College 2020 – Bill Goodman ‘Lost in Translations’ Which Bible Shall We Read? How Do Bible Translators Work? Today we have numerous different Bible translations in English. The translators tend to use two different approaches: - Literal – try to translate the exact words and phrases of the original language. A ‘word-for-word’ approach; also known as ‘Formal Equivalence’. - Dynamic – try to translate the thoughts and ideas of the original text. Update words, idioms and grammar by finding equivalents in the receptor language. An ‘idea-for-idea’ approach; also known as ‘Functional Equivalence’. For examples of the difference, compare different translations of Mark 15:33 (in NT times, what we call ‘noon’ was ‘the sixth hour’) or Phil. 1:8 (literally ‘bowels’, understood to be where compassion arises). Most translations use both approaches, but prefer one more strongly than the other. The box below gives a rough guide to which way each of the most commonly available versions leans. The Apostolos Manuscripts of St. Petersburg
The Apostolos manuscripts of St. Petersburg by E. Strelnikova St. Petersburg State University There are two significant collections of Greek manuscripts in Saint Petersburg with a long and complicated history. They were formed out of collections that belonged to various private, scholarly and monastic libraries. The collection of Greek manuscripts in the National Library of Russia contains 965 items dating from the 3rd to the 20th century, written on parchment, papyrus and paper. In the collection there are several manuscripts of extreme importance on a worldwide scale. The majority of manuscripts are fragments brought to Russia as items of various private collections. Last year (2014) researchers of the manuscript department finished The Catalogue of Greek Manuscripts of the National Library of Russia. It includes all manuscripts written in Greek which belong not only to the Greek collection but to some other manuscript collections of the National Library of Russia. There is still no online catalogue but recently projects for digitizing and uploading catalogues of the library have been initiated. Another important collection of Greek manuscripts belongs to the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which has from 287 to 293 items according to different catalogues. The variation is due to discoveries of new manuscripts within collections already kept in the library, and the identification of two or more items in a single manuscript. 84 manuscripts belong to the period of the Byzantine Empire. The most numerous part of the collection is RAIK (the collection of the Russian Archaeological Institute in Constantinople). The only catalogue of the collection is The Description of the Manuscript Department of the Library of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, published in 1973 and written by a Russian paleographer, Irina Lebedeva. -

BIBLE STUDY RESOURCES The best way to find out more about Jesus and strengthen your relationship with him is to read the Bible for yourself. Here are some resources and pointers that may be helpful for you. WHERE SHOULD I START? Try reading Mark, which is the most concise book that tells the story of Jesus, or Ephesians, which is a good summary of the Christian life. What next? A good way to read through your bible is to rotate between different parts of the Bible and just take it at your own pace. The important thing is that you are sampling all the different parts of the Bible, rather than just the parts that are comfortable to you. Here is a list of the books of the bible, divided into five categories. Try rotating through the five categories. GOT QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BIBLE? As you’re reading through the bible, you will probably be confused and have questions. The best thing you can do about this is to read the bible with a friend or a small group and discuss it. Also, here are some good resources that will help you: “The Bible Project” Videos on Youtube These short 5-10 minute videos summarize books of the bible and themes in the bible. Watch the video on the book you are reading and it will help you understand the big picture of it. The ESV Study Bible or The Zondervan NIV Study Bible: These are excellent study bibles that will give you detailed study notes on every book of the Bible.
