INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEW The Reminiscences of Seymour Boyers © 2006 New York Preservation Archive Project PREFACE The following oral history is the result of a recorded interview with Seymour Boyers conducted by Interviewers Anthony C. Wood and Dorothy Miner on Oct. 17, 2006. This interview is part of the New York Preservation Archive’s Project’s collection of individual oral history interviews. The reader is asked to bear in mind that s/he is reading a verbatim transcript of the spoken word, rather than written prose. The views expressed in this oral history interview do not necessarily reflect the views of the New York Preservation Archive Project. A prominent attorney, politician, and judge, former City Council member Seymour Boyers was one of three sponsors of the Landmarks Law passed by the council in 1965. In this 2006 interview conducted by NYPAP president Anthony Wood, former Landmarks Commission counsel Dorothy Miner, and preservationist Liz McEneny, Boyers draws on his personal records to recount the dynamics of the bill’s drafting, the perspectives of organizations and individuals who were consulted during the drafting process, and the political strategies that helped ensure the bill’s passage. The interview also touches on the legal landscape for landmarks in the first few years after the law was enacted. Seymour Boyers is a former City Council member, representing the Fifth District in Queens, and served as a Councilman at Large in the 1960s. He also served on the State Assembly, as Justice of the Civil Court and Supreme Court in Queens County, and in the Appellate Division, Second Department. -

CVS began administering 20,600 vaccine doses in New York today (Feb. 12) at 32 locations outside New York City under the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. The program will initially send 1 million doses of the Moderna vaccine directly to 6,500 pharmacies nationwide each week, bolster- ing what each state is already distributing to pharmacies. Walgreens also began administering doses today under the program, allocating 18,600 doses to 187 of its pharmacies in New York City and 10,700 doses to 107 stores in the rest of the state. Landmarks Preservation Commission November 16, 1993, Designation List 255 LP-1887 ANTHONY CAMPAGNA ESTATE 640 West 249th Street, The Bronx. Built 1929-1930; architect Dwight James Baum. Landmark Site: Borough of The Bronx Tax Map Block 5914, Lot 315. On June 2, 1992, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Anthony Campagna Estate and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 3). At the request of the owner, the hearing was continued to December 8, 1992 (Item No. 2). Both hearings were duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. At the two hearings, there were eight speakers in favor of the designation and none in opposition; the then owners took no position. The current owners have not taken a position on designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary The Anthony Campagna Estate was built in 1929-30 in the Riverdale section of the Bronx as the home of this prominent Italian-born New York City builder and philanthropist. The work of Dwight James Baum, a leading New York City architect praised for his carefully conceived and executed suburban and country residences, the house is modeled after Italian villas, an unusual prototype for New York City. The elements of the landscape design, by Ferruccio Vitale, an Italian-born landscape architect, and his partner Alfred Geiffert, Jr., were also based on Italian prototypes, in keeping with the design of the house, and won the 1934 gold medal in landscape architecture from the Architectural League of New York. The design of the house and grounds, on a site overlooking the Hudson River to the Palisades, is one of Baum's most impressive and is a major example of 1920s architectural eclecticism by a recognized master of the genre. -

Nineteenth Ce ntury The Magazine of the Victorian Society in America Volume 40 Number 1 Editorial The Artist’s Shadow The Winter Show at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City is always a feast for the eyes. Dazzling works of art, decorative arts, and sculpture appear that we might never see again. During a tour of this pop-up museum in January I paused at the booth of the Alexander Gallery where a painting caught my eye. It was an 1812 portrait of two endearing native-New Yorkers Schuyler Ogden and his sister, the grand-nephew and grand-niece of General Stephen Van Rensselaer. I am always sure that exhibitors at such shows can distinguish the buyers from the voyeurs in a few seconds but that did not prevent the gallery owner from engaging with me in a lively conversation about Fresh Raspberries . It was clear he had considerable affection for the piece. Were I a buyer, I would have very happily bought this little confection then and there. The boy, with his plate of fresh picked berries, reminds me of myself at that very age. These are not something purchased at a market. These are berries he and his sister have freshly picked just as they were when my sisters and I used to bring bowls of raspberries back to our grandmother from her berry patch, which she would then make into jam. I have no doubt Master Ogden and his beribboned sister are on their way to present their harvest to welcoming hands. As I walked away, I turned one last time to bid them adieu and that is when I saw its painter, George Harvey. -

“A Progressive Conservative”: The Roles of George Perkins and Frank Munsey in the Progressive Party Campaign of 1912 A thesis submitted by Marena Cole in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Tufts University May 2017 Adviser: Reed Ueda Abstract The election of 1912 was a contest between four parties. Among them was the Progressive Party, a movement begun by former president Theodore Roosevelt. George Perkins and Frank Munsey, two wealthy businessmen with interests in business policy and reform, provided the bulk of the Progressive Party’s funding and proved crucial to its operations. This stirred up considerable controversy, particularly amongst the party’s radical wing. One Progressive, Amos Pinchot, would later say that the two corrupted and destroyed the movement. While Pinchot’s charge is too severe, particularly given the support Perkins and Munsey had from Roosevelt, the two did push the Progressive Party to adopt a softer program on antitrust regulation and enforcement of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The Progressive Party’s official position on antitrust and the Sherman Act, as shaped by Munsey and Perkins, would cause internal ideological schisms within the party that would ultimately contribute to the party’s dissolution. ii Acknowledgements This thesis finalizes my time at the Tufts University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, which has been a tremendously challenging and fulfilling place to study. Amos Pinchot: Rebel Prince Nancy Pittman Pinchot Guilford, Connecticut A rebel is the kind of person who feels his rebellion not as a plea for this or that reform, but as an unbearable tension in his viscera. [He has] to break down the cause of his frustration or jump out of his skin. -Walter Lippmann' Introduction Amos Richards Eno Pinchot, if remembered at all, is usually thought of only as the younger, some might say lesser, brother of Gifford Pinchot, who founded the Forest Service and then became two-time governor of Pennsylva- nia. Yet Amos Pinchot, who never held an important position either in or out of government and was almost always on the losing side, was at the center of most of the great progressive fights of the first half of this century. His life and Amos and GirdPinchot Amos Pinchot: Rebel Prince career encompassed two distinct progressive eras, anchored by the two Roosevelt presidencies, during which these ideals achieved their greatest gains. During the twenty years in between, many more battles were lost than won, creating a discouraging climate. Nevertheless, as a progressive thinker, Amos Pinchot held onto his ideals tenaciously. Along with many others, he helped to form an ideological bridge which safeguarded many of the ideas that might have perished altogether in the hostile climate of the '20s. Pinchot seemed to thrive on adversity. Already out of step by 1914, he considered himself a liberal of the Jeffersonian stamp, dedicated to the fight against monopoly. In this, he was opposed to Teddy Roosevelt, who, was cap- tivated by Herbert Croly's "New Nationalism," extolled big business controlled by even bigger government. -

Images Available Upon Request Contact: Martha Gellens 718.549.3200 x232 or [email protected] TENDING TOWARD THE UNTAMED: ARTISTS RESPOND TO THE WILD GARDEN Wave Hill Glyndor Gallery, April 3–August 19, 2012 Bronx, NY, February 14, 2012– Wave Hill’s signature Wild Garden serves as an inspiration for eight artists who are creating new work in a variety of media, including painting, animation, photography, sculpture and new media installation in Glyndor Gallery. The artists are particularly interested in the garden’s display of species from around the world, as well as in the tension between the Wild Garden’s seemingly untamed appearance and the intensive activity required to create and maintain it. Works by Isabella Kirkland and Anat Shiftan portray the remarkable variety of plants represented in the Wild Garden, while Julie Evans and Rebecca Morales embrace its diverse plant palette and mix of spontaneity and control. Gary Carsley, Chris Doyle and Erik Sanner capture the stimulating experience of viewing the garden’s varied and immersive terrain; Janelle Lynch shares their interest in the cycles of change represented by the growth, continual maintenance and decomposition of the Wild Garden’s plants over the seasons. Based on concepts championed by Irish gardener William Robinson in the 1870’s, the Wild Garden achieves a relaxed, serendipitous quality that contrasts with more formal parts of Wave Hill’s landscape. Wave Hill horticultural staff have undertaken a transformation of the Wild Garden in the last year, rejuvenating flower beds, opening new vistas to the Hudson River and Palisades and improving pathways, all with an eye to restoring the balance between the amount of light experienced in this part of the garden and the feeling of enclosure that is characteristic of this garden ―room.‖ The Wild Garden provides a framework for the new art created for this spring’s exhibition. -

Calvert Vaux: Architect and Planner by William Alex alvert Vaux, architect and planner, is an unjustly neglected nineteenth-century figure. Long overshadowed by his more famous partners, Andrew Jackson Downing and Frederick C Law Olmsted, Vaux has failed to receive recognition a the first professional in America to combine the talents oflandscape designer, architect, and planner. Working with Downing during the early 1850s, Vaux established a set of distinctive domestic architec tural designs that served as a standard throughout the remainder of the century. Vaux initiated the process that led to the creation of Central Park in New York and Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and per suaded Olmsted to join him in both endeavors. Their designs for these two prototypical country parks in the city were of crucial importance in forming the urban face of nineteenth-century indus trial America. Vaux shared the strong reformist impulse that infused many of his contemporaries and saw his work as an opportunity to translate "the republican art idea" into physical form. While the ultimate effect of this effort is still much debated, Vaux and Olmsted created. parks that were clear manifestations ofa particular notion of the democra tizing value of amenable public spaces. Vaux also found an outlet for his concern in designs for shelters for the Children's Aid Society and for the first buildings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History, soon to become two of New York's pre-eminent cultural institutions. Although Calvert Vaux's greatest achievements were collaborative, they nonetheless bespeak a creative genius that for too long has gone uncelebrated. -
