Levine Arthur S . Levine, MD, is senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine . In partnership with UPMC, one of the largest academic medical centers in the nation, Levine works to ensure that health care delivery, biomedical research, and health sciences education remain strong and suited for future growth at Pitt . During his tenure, the University became one of the top 10 U .S . institutions receiving National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding . Today, Pitt ranks fifth in NIH research funding . Levine directs efforts to invigorate and expand the research portfolios of Pitt’s six health sciences schools . The University has launched a number of multidisciplinary research centers and institutes in recent years, including the Brain Institute, Drug Discovery Institute, Center for Vaccine ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS Research, and Institute for Precision Medicine . In 2006, the University was among the first 12 institutions selected by NIH to receive a Clinical and Translational Science Award . This $83 5. Gregory A . Scott, BS, MBA, Senior Vice Chancellor for Business and Operations Prior to his 1998 appointment at Pitt, Levine had a long, productive career at NIH, first at the Geovette E . Washington, AB, JD, Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Legal Officer National Cancer Institute and then as scientific director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Paul Lawrence, BS, MBA, Treasurer Institute of Child Health and Human Development . Cynthia C . Moore, BA, JD, Deputy Secretary of the Board of Trustees and Throughout his career, Levine has conducted molecular biologic research . He and colleagues Senior Associate General Counsel performed the first physical and genetic mapping of the mammalian tumor virus SV40 and Gregory G . Schuler, BComm, MBA, CFA, Chief Investment Officer significantly advanced scientific understanding of naturally occurring viral recombinant DNAs . Levine continues to direct his own laboratory, which focuses on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and other dementias . Levine has written more than 270 scientific articles and is a member of several leading research societies, including the Association of American Physicians . His honors include the Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service medals of the U .S . Public Health Service, the Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medal, the Distinguished Alumnus Award and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the Chicago Medical School, and an NIH Director’s Award . A graduate of Columbia University, Levine majored in comparative literature and edited The Columbia Review . He received his MD from the Chicago Medical School, now part of the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science . He completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in hematology and biochemical genetics at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis .
