4 | alumni.amc.edu PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

SAVE THE DATE 20

- Fellow Alumni:

I AM PLEASED AND EXCITED TO SERVE AS THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE Alumni Association. I would like to thank Kevin Roberts, MD ’77 for his leadership the past two years. He has been an enthusiastic supporter of students, faculty, alumni, and Albany Med, and is the only Alumni Association president to serve as chief of the Albany Med medical staff.

Nearly 300 gathered in Albany for Reunion in April for a weekend of festivities, lectures, and academic programs. I think you will enjoy event photos featured in this issue.

As a third-generation Albany Med graduate, I respect and have benefited from the opportunity presented to me by family and the College. I have worked to share this legacy for the benefit of others. However, what I observed at Commencement in May was humbling and inspirational. Attention was given to first-generation 2019 college graduates, and a simple black and gold honor cord accented their gowns. No medical student has it easy, but these graduates represent an evolving Albany Med legacy of which we can be proud.

During my tenure as president, I will focus on supporting the Dean, the College, the Alumni Association, and the Medical Center Foundation to enhance the College endowment. An increase in scholarships and reduction of student debt is a clear road to broadening the diversity that will benefit research, education and care. Your participation in these efforts makes a difference.

We hope to hear from you and do not hesitate to reach out if I can be of assistance. Email: [email protected]

I look forward to serving you.

Sincerely, Evan Vosburgh, MD ’82

President

6 | alumni.amc.edu DEAN’S MESSAGE

REUNION 2019 WAS ESPECIALLY SIGNIFICANT AS THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION honored my classmate Anthony Ritaccio, MD ’84 with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and our class enjoyed reconnecting and celebrating his achievements.

When I graduated from Albany Med 35 years ago, there was no internet as we know it today and patients did not arrive for care after reading volumes online about their potential condition. Prescription drug ads targeted to patients were new, controversial and beginning to air on television. Medical records were on paper. Federal researchers had discovered the virus causing AIDS. Managed care was an evolving concept.

Albany Med’s newest graduates who recently earned MD, PhD, CRNA, MS and PA degrees are entering an entirely different environment for practicing medicine and conducting research. Our mission at Albany Medical College continues: to provide excellent medical education and improve health through patient care, education and research. We are proud of our students and how they are learning to adapt and succeed through change. Change cannot be avoided. It is necessary. It gives us hope for new discoveries and treatments which cure conditions and extend or save lives.

We are successful in many areas because of you—our alumni who remain engaged and share generous support which has made a difference for many of our recent graduates. Your giving through scholarship, the Annual Fund and other programs is crucial to our mission.

We congratulate our newest graduates and we look forward to hearing about their success.

Best Wishes, Vincent P. Verdile, MD ’84

SUMMER 2019 | 17 50TH REUNIONReflections

MAYBE IT IS A SIGN OF OLD AGE— I TURNED 83 IN JULY—BUT THERE IS A NEW FRAMED PICTURE ON OUR MANTEL THAT ALMOST BRINGS ME TO TEARS EVERY TIME I LOOK AT IT.

It is a group picture of 13 men (plus 10 spouses) taken at our 50th medical school class reunion this year. Our class of 1969 was one of the last of the small classes—only 71 of us, including just five women. (Class sizes would double because of government subsidies to increase the number of doctors in this country). That meant we had a chance to get to know each other quite well during the course of those four sometimes turbulent years that led to an MD degree in the spring of 1969.

And then, of course, we went our separate ways—internship and residency all over the country. Specialties ranging from brain surgery to being a doctor on TV. Marriages and children and triumphs and disappointments. But all of our lives being dramatically changed because we had made it through those four years and become doctors.

Out of that group I have remained close to only one over the years, but I have never forgotten all the others. When we have gathered every five years for reunions, the bond wrought by those four years has been instantly rekindled. Despite the fact that we are mostly so very different in terms of backgrounds and life experiences, we are also so very alike in one of the most important parts of our lives: somehow we made it together through that grueling experience called medical school. Somehow we all survived the terrifying tests in biochemistry, the stink of the cadaver room, the first exposures to dying patients, the all-night ward duties. Somehow we all walked the stage at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in June of 1969 to grab the diploma that literally gave us license to lead a very different life than would otherwise have been possible.

So when I look at this photo of my “band of brothers” I want to weep with gratitude that we are still here, that we can still remember those days together even as we realize the days we have left are far less than we once had. And I want to say thank you to the fates or guiding hand that made it possible.

—G. Timothy Johnson, MD ’69

of office were given to those serving under the Continental Army, beginning in 1775, and while the ceremony and words have changed, its purpose remains the same: a solemn and sacred pledge to serve our nation. I have had the privilege, over the last quarter-century, of participating in and witnessing dozens of promotion ceremonies. Some have taken place on the drill field. Some have taken place on the battlefield. Every time, I am reminded of the words of a Marine Corps general who told us that in the military, we promote people not because of what they have done, but rather what we know they are capable of doing. And what we are asking these two young doctors to do is among the most important things a country can ask of anyone. It is, to care for its most precious resource: its people, the men and women of the armed services, along with the remarkable and brave families that support them. It may be in a clinic, a hospital, or, lest we forget as we enter this Memorial Day weekend, wherever they are deployed: on land, on sea or in the air, in times of peace or in a combat zone. He presented nationally and internationally on critical topics in pediatrics and authored many scholarly publications in his areas of interest. Mitchell K. Karten, MD ’79 A lifelong passionate skier, Jeff eventually got his “dream job” as director of the Pediatric Hospitalist Steven P. Nachtigall, MD ’79 Program at Vail Valley Medical Center located “on campus” at Vail Ski Resort. On my many Judith E. Sandick, MD ’82 visits to Vail, Jeff served as our personal ski concierge – guiding my wife and me through the vast Jeffrey M. Brown, MD ’83 resort including many “insider” routes only known to locals. Jeff had a relentless zest for life. Along with being an avid Denver Broncos fan, his active lifestyle included a passion for skiing, golf, squash, sailing and later biking despite major health challenges, including throat cancer and multiple sclerosis. While these illnesses may have slowed him down from time to time, they never tamed his love for the great outdoors and his love for spending time

1955 – 2019 with his family and friends. He and his wife, Meg Alice J. Lemieux, 1930 – 2019 McCormick, completed Ride the Rockies, a cross Colorado bicycle tour, seven times, the Register’s Honorary ’93 Great Annual Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBAI) several times, and the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) 150 twice. Among our many trips together was a trek to the top of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming to view the 2017 total eclipse of the sun. After years of cajoling (begging), I eventually convinced Jeff and Meg to come skiing with my wife Robin and me in Vermont in the winter of 2018 – believe it or not, these Rocky Mountain skiers had a great time skiing the East! Jeff cared passionately about his pediatric patients, their parents and families, and about public health. He taught me to “think big” as a physician with a focus on the patient in the context of the surrounding world. He cultivated relationships with physician peers and hospital board members, and was known to stop and converse with custodians and cafeteria workers, often in fluent Spanish. He spoke fondly with other alumni of his time at Albany Med – even attending reunions Alice Lemieux came to work at the Albany Medical College of his original entering class of 1982.
