ANNUAL REPORT Academic Year 2019-2020 International Space University The International Space University, founded in 1987 in Massachusetts, US, and now headquartered in Stras- bourg, France, is the world’s premier international space education institution. It is supported by major space agencies and aerospace organizations from around the world. The graduate level programs offered by ISU are dedicated to promoting international, interdisciplinary and intercultural cooperation in space activities. ISU offers the Master of Science in Space Studies program at its Central Campus in Strasbourg. Since the summer of 1988, ISU conducts the two-month Space Studies Program at different host institutions in locations spanning the globe; more recently the Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program; and the online Interactive Space Program. ISU programs are delivered by over 100 ISU faculty members in concert with invited industry and agency experts from institutions around the world. Since its founding, more than 5000 students from 110 countries graduated from ISU. PBS and Time Inc. Announce BEYOND A YEAR IN SPACE Part Two of the A YEAR IN SPACE Specials Premieres November 2017 PASADENA, CA; January 15, 2017 – PBS President and CEO Paula A. Kerger announced today at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour that BEYOND A YEAR IN SPACE, a follow-up documentary to 2016’s A YEAR IN SPACE special, is scheduled to premiere on PBS in November 2017 (watch a clip). The two specials, adapted from TIME’s original digital video series about astronaut Scott Kelly’s 12-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS), explore the human limitations for space travel and what a mission to Mars will require. BEYOND A YEAR IN SPACE tracks Scott Kelly’s homecoming after a historic year in space – the longest space mission in American history. In addition to seeing Scott’s long-awaited reunion with his family and friends at home in Texas, the film follows Scott and his identical twin brother, and fellow astronaut, Mark Kelly, as they undergo testing for NASA’s twin study. The twin study hopes to identify precisely what changes Scott underwent after 12 months aboard the ISS by comparing him to Mark, who spent the year on Earth. -

The Role and Training of NASA Astronauts in the Post-Shuttle Era Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board ∙ Air Force Studies Board ∙ Division on Engineering & Physical Sciences ∙ September 2011 As the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) retires the Space Shuttle and shifts involvement in International Space Station (ISS) operations, changes in the role and requirements of NASA’s Astronaut Corps will take place. At the request of NASA, the National Research Council (NRC) addressed three main questions about these changes: What should be the role and size of Johnson Space Center’s (JSC) Flight Crew Operations Directorate (FCOD); what will be the requirements of astronaut training facilities; and is the Astronaut Corps’ fleet of training aircraft a cost-effective means of preparing astronauts for NASA’s spaceflight program? This report presents an assessment of several issues driven by these questions. This report does not address explicitly the future of human spaceflight. All of this training takes place among the international partners behind the ISS program, which means that I am constantly travelling between NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Star City in Russia, and the European Astronaut Center. The training is intended to teach us new skills, but it doesn’t teach us much about life in space. -

Lipica, located in the southwest of Slovenia, is the oldest European stud breeding the same horse since its beginning. The hatches between the linked shuttle Endeavour and international space station will be sealed late Tuesday morning. Then early in the afternoon, Endeavour will pull away and its seven astronauts will begin preparing for a landing on Friday. Among those headed home is Japanese spaceman Koichi Wakata, who's been in orbit since March. NASA astronaut Timothy Kopra replaced him aboard the space station. The Endeavour crew is leaving after delivering and installing a new porch and experiments for Japan's lab, and giving the space station some fresh batteries. The hit film, Apollo 13, chronicles Kranz’s struggle to devise the plan that would safely bring the ship and its crew of three astronauts home after its oxygen system failed. Actor Ed Harris portrays Kranz in the film, which was directed by Ron Howard. Kranz retired from NASA in 1994 after 37 years of federal service, and is currently a consultant and speaker. “Failure is not an option,” the motto that carried him through the Apollo 13 crisis, is a major theme of his motivational message. After receiving his B.S. degree in aeronautical engineering from Parks College of St. Louis University in 1954, Kranz was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force, and flew high performance jet fighter aircraft, including the F-80, F-86, and F-100. In 1958, he worked as a flight-test engineer for McDonnell Aircraft, developing the Quail Decoy Missile for B-52 and B-47 aircraft. Kranz joined the NASA Space Task Group at Langley, Virginia, in 1960, and was assigned the position of assistant flight director for Project Mercury. He assumed flight director duties for all Project Gemini Missions, and was branch chief for Flight Control Operations.
