Sources and Acknowledgements The Shone and Bloor family histories in East Liverpool and Buckley were assembled initially from a family tree provided by Mrs. Sydney W. (Esther) Jones of East Liverpool (great granddaughter of Esther Bloor). The Shone history was supplemented by information provided by Mrs. Joan Kelsall of Buckley and Steven Shone, formerly of Buckley. The history of the Bloors in East Liverpool was supplemented by information from Mrs. Dolores Wheatley David of Denver, Colorado (great granddaughter of Herbert Bloor and Charlotte Jones); Mrs. Margaret Schneider of Vacaville, California (granddaughter of James Bloor and Annie Dennis); Allan Bloor of Collierville, Tennessee; Kenneth Poole and Cathy Platt.

Mr. W. Spencer Bloor late of Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania provided his considerable knowledge of the Bloors of Trenton and his great grandfather, Enoch Bloor. Mrs. Kath Barker and Ian Bloor of the Bloor Society provided parish register transcripts that proved that this Enoch was the son of Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool. Ian Bloor and Joyce Settle have done much to try to connect various Bloor trees.

Esther Bloor was my (Peter Kelsall’s) great-great-grandmother. She was born September 22, 1821 in Hanley, Staffordshire in the English district and baptized at St. John's, Hanley October 24, 1841. Her parents were Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool and I know of nine siblings. Esther married Samuel Shone from Buckley, Flintshire on December 15, 1839 in Hanley. Sometime between 1847 and 1850 Samuel and Esther returned to Buckley. They had eight children including my great-grandfather, William Shone, born in Fenton in 1845. Esther died January 2, 1899 in Buckley.

Esther Bloor married Samuel Shone on December 15, 1839 in Hanley. They subsequently lived in Buckley, Flintshire and had eight children. Their second son, William Shone, was my great grandfather. William married Fanny Peters in Buckley and they had 12 children. Their seventh child, Lily Shone, was my grandmother. She married John Iredale and they were bakers and confectioners, owning a shop in the Lane End area of Buckley until the mid 1950’s. Lily and John had two daughters, Olwen who lived in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, and my mother, Joan, who lived in Buckley before passing away in 2005. Olwen had one son, Ian Wilson, who now also lives in Alderley Edge. I grew up in Buckley, attended Imperial College, London, and have lived in the United States since 1977.

In the 1841 census, Samuel and Esther, with daughter Emma 8 months old were living in the Lane End district of Stoke-on-Trent now part of Longton. Samuel is listed as a coal miner and Esther as a pot painter. They were living in Wood St., which is in the centre of modern Longton, off King Street, opposite Longton Station. Thomas Shone is also listed in Wood St., with wife Martha and children, Edward, Thomas and Charlotte. Based on age and his mother’s name, Charlotte, Thomas is identified as Samuel’s brother born in 1813. (Thomas is probably the same Thomas found in Tranmere in 1881.) William Shone was listed in Church St., living with Charles and Sarah Jones. This is in the centre of Stoke near the Museum. Thomas and William are listed as coal miners like Samuel.

In 1845, Samuel and Esther were living in China St., Fenton, as listed on the birth certificate of their second son, William, my great grandfather. China St. is in the centre of Fenton about one mile from Wood St. in Longton.

They were married at St. Peter's1, Stoke, Staffordshire on January 12, 18082. Joseph Bloore, likely Enoch's brother, was a witness.

Enoch Bloor was born in about 1785. He was identified in the parish registers at the time of his marriage and most of his children’s baptisms as a potter, and on Elizabeth's death certificate as a pot presser. However, at the time of daughter Edney’s birth in 1814 he was listed as a soldier3.

Enoch died 20 January 1842 in Fenton aged 56. The certificate lists asthma as the cause. Daughter Esther was present at the death.

Elizabeth Pool is identified in the parish register records of her children’s christenings as the daughter of Hanley Pool (or Poole) of Hanley. From the records of St. John’s Church, Hanley, Elizabeth Poole daughter of Hanley and Hannah Poole of Hanley was born December 6, 1790. Hanley Poole of Stoke Parish married Hannah Tams also of Stoke parish at Norton-le-Moors Church on October 11, 1789.

1 The present St. Peter's was built in 1826. The original churchyard contains the tombs of Josiah , and 2 Copy of original parish register provided by Kath Barker. Name spelled Bloore. 3 This was the time of the Napoleonic Wars, ended at Waterloo 18 June 1815. https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 3 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020©

Elizabeth died 10 January 1859 at Gate St., Fenton aged 68. The certificate lists disease of the stomach as the cause. Her daughter, Martha Copestack was present at the death.

In the 1841 census, the Bloor family was living in the Terrace Building in Fenton. Children living with Enoch and Elizabeth were James, Edwin, Enoch, Joseph, Jesse and Mary Ann.

The Terrace Buildings were still in existence in the 1881, the census listing 23 separate residences. The location is identified on the C19 Ordnance Survey map near the center of Fenton approximately in the location of the present-day north-south spur of the A50 adjacent to Glebedale Park. This was within a few hundred feet of China St. where Samuel and Esther Shone were living in 1845. The location was near Glebe and Oldfield Collieries and many china works including Minerva, Lane Delph and Park. Other families present in 1841 included that of Thomas Ball, an ancestor of correspondent Donald Massey. Thomas was born in Hawarden Parish but married his wife in Stoke, just like Samuel Shone

The complete family can be traced through the parish registers4, and census records.

1. Harriett. Baptised March 1, 1812. [Found in Select Births and Christenings, Ancestry (no image), original record not found by Kath Barker with others at St Johns Hanley] Not found in census and no likely marriage in IGI. Poole tree on

4 From registers provided by Kath Barker, except as noted. The registers identify Joseph as the seventh child, Jesse as the fifth son, and Elizabeth and Mary Ann as the fifth and sixth daughters. By my count Joseph was the 4th son. https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 4 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020© Ancestry indicates she was buried 10 November 1812 at St. Johns Hanley.

2. Edney. Baptised August 10, 1814 at St. John's Hanley. Married Isaac Tunnicliffe 1840. Children Elizabeth (c 1841), John, James, Isaac, Frederic, Sarah Ann [children found in census and matched to mother’s name on GRO Index.] Edney died 1899.

An 1840 marriage shows Edna Bolton married Isaac Tunnicliffe with Samuel and Esther Shone as witnesses and father identified as Enoch Bolton.

Is this a second marriage for Edney? Poole tree on Ancestry suggests an earlier child Francis Elijah Bloor born 1835 living with John & Hannah Bolton in 1841 (grandparents?). If this is Edna Bloore’s son, he did not go to live with his mother after she remarried. From Poole tree Francis married Mary Shaw, lived in Derbyshire. Died 1899.

3. Martha: Baptised 6 Oct 1816 at Hanley, daughter of Enoch Bloar (sic) and Elizabeth, married George Copstake 10 Aug 1835 Stoke5. Present at mother’s death in 1859. 8 children. Died 1898.

4. James. Born about 18196. James married Mary Brandred at Hanley December 7, 18457. In 1861 and 1871 James and Mary are living at 36 Gate St with children Harriet and Ann (later called Annie E. and Elizabeth in the census). James not seen after 1871, likely died Dec Q 1871 aged 52, Stoke (freeBMD). Mary and daughter Elizabeth, 37, were still living at 36 Gate St. in 1881. Elizabeth may be the Annie living at 24 Gate Street in 1891 (correct age but noted as a widow). Died 1871.

5. Esther. My great-great-grandmother, born September 22, 1821 baptised at St. John's, Hanley October 24, 1841.

5 From Kenneth Poole 20 Nov 2012, 6 from age in 1841, not found in registers or IGI. 7 Hanley PR (VRI2) lists Enoch Bloor as father https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 5 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020© 6. Edwin (aka Edward). Baptised February 15, 1824 at St. John's Hanley. Living at the Terrace Building in 1851 with wife Margaret and children John, Jesse and Emily. From Poole tree on Ancestry, Edwin married Margaret Hough - supported by daughter Emily born 1850 Stoke, mother Hough in GRO. I have not found this Edwin in any later census and he is probably the Edward Bloore died 1862 age 38. In the 1871 census Margaret has remarried to George Hughes and is living at Fenton Park with children Marronya (sic8) and Mary. In the 1881 census Margaret and George Hughes were living at 55 Victoria Rd. with children Emily (30) and William (9)9. William is living at the Terrace Buildings in 1901, unmarried living with housekeeper Annie Cox. George and Annie are living at China St. Fenton in 1911 with children William, Ethel, Thomas, Sarah, Richard10 and Annie.

7. Enoch. Born August 11, 1826, baptised June 29, 1827 at Zion Chapel Methodist New Connexion11, Longton. Enoch was the great grandfather of the late W. Spencer Bloor of Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. Enoch had three wives, Eliza, Mary (Bramald) and Jane (Greatorex)12. Enoch had children Elizabeth and Mary Ann with Eliza, Edward William with Jane and Edna with Mary. Edward William was living with Enoch and Mary in 1881 at Granville St., Stoke, and migrated to Trenton, New Jersey shortly thereafter. Enoch died in 1887 while visiting in America. W. Spencer Bloor traced the descendants of Edward William in the U.S. in detail.

As shown by the Poole Tree on Ancestry Enoch’s first wife was Eliza Birchall married 29 March 1846, St. Peters, Stoke. Their daughter Mary Ann is the direct ancestor of Kenneth Poole.

8. Joseph. Born June 8, 1827, baptised June 29, 1827 at Zion, Longton. Married Harriet Eliza Shuffelbotham in Fulford, Staffordshire on July 23, 1848. Joseph and Harriet have many descendants in the United States (see below). Joseph died in Longton on December 30, 1878.

9. Jesse. Born May 8, 1831, baptised June 5, 1831 at Zion, Longton. Living with mother in the Terrace Building in 1851. Not found in census after this date. Jesse is not listed anywhere in the 1881 census. Died c. 1853 per Poole tree on Ancestry (found in GRO Index Dec q 1853, Stoke).

8 from the census transcription in Annals of the Bloor Families 6.1. I have not found any other use or definition of this name. Based on age it would appear to be Emily Mary Ann? 9 Identified as William Bloor, son but he is only 9 and Margaret was married to George Hughes in 1871. Is he Emily's son? 10 Richard was father of Paul Bloor who married correspondent Karen Bloor. William and Annie married c. 1894 from 1911 census; marriage not found 11 Zion Methodist New Connexion was located at the corner of Cobden and Carlisle, location now occupied by Elim Pentecostal 12 From death certificate, Jane Bloor died January 4, 1865 aged 29 of bronchitis, at 13 Ashwood, Longton, Joseph Bloor in attendance. Other details of Enoch and descendants from W. Spencer Bloor. https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 6 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020©

10. Elizabeth. Born December 6, 1833, baptised January 5, 1834 at Zion, Longton. Not at home in 1841 census.

11. Mary Ann. Born November 9, 1836, baptised December 4 at Zion Methodist New Connexion, Longton. Living with mother in the Terrace Building in 1851. Per Poole Tree on Ancestry Mary Ann married Edward Warren 1858 and had 6 children; supported by son Arthur born 1866 Stoke, mother Bloor per GRO.

https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 7 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020© Joseph Bloor and Mary Gold Enoch Bloor's parents are not known other than by circumstantial evidence. In the 1841 census Enoch’s age is given as 55 and at the time of his death in January 1842 as 56. This indicates that he was born most likely in 1785. The most likely candidate from the IGI is Enoch Bloor, christened December 11, 1785 in Norton-in-the-Moors, Staffordshire, to father, Joseph and mother, Mary.

The IGI lists other children for Joseph and Mary: Dorothy (christened February 27, 1780), Joseph (December 21, 1781), Richard (May 10, 1784), John (February 13, 1789), Hannah (February 27, 1792), William (August 29, 1795) and Mary Ann (Dec 5, 1802)1314. The parents may have been Joseph Bloor and Mary Gold, married April 8, 1779 in Stoke.

If the line to Joseph and Mary is proven or assumed, the line traces back further to Joseph Bloor and Dorothy Leigh, and then James Bloor and Mary?15.

• Joseph Bloor, born abt. 1730, died abt. 1770. Married Dorothy Leigh 1752 at Stoke. • James Bloor, born abt. 1700, married Mary?

The connection of Enoch to Joseph and Mary may be strengthened by ongoing DNA studies.

13 Dates from IGI. Confirmed from Norton registers for Enoch, Joseph and Dorothy by Heather French. Heather gives date for Richard as 1785. 14 Another Joseph Bloor christened in Norton-in-the-Moors in 1789 went to Canada in the early 1800's, opened an inn, built a brewery, went into property and retired a wealthy man. Bloor St in Toronto is named after him. His parents were James Bloor and Sarah, and he married Sarah Lees. His brother James was a brewer in Toronto in 1856 and William was a butcher there; they both lived next to Joseph in Bloor St. Joseph died 31 Aug 1862 [photo of gravestone from Ron Bloor via Joyce Settle] 15 Based on the “Dorothy Leigh tree” assembled by Joyce Settle. https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 8 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020© Joseph Bloor and Harriet Shuffelbotham Joseph Bloor married Harriet Eliza Shuffelbotham in Fulford, Staffordshire on July 23, 1848. Joseph and Eliza’s births and marriage together with the births of their eight children are recorded in a family bible held by Margaret Schneider of Vacaville, California. In 1861, Joseph and Harriet were living on Ashwood St. in Longton with children Herbert, Mary, James and Elizabeth. Joseph was listed as a saucer maker and Herbert as a potter. In 1871 the family was living at 2 Lower Russell Street. Joseph Bloor died in Longton on December 30, 1878.

Three of the children - Arthur, Henrietta and Harriet - died young. The second son, James was born February 13, 1857 and emigrated to East Liverpool, Ohio in 187916 when he was 21 (less than two months after his father died). One year later he sent for his mother and his four surviving brothers and sisters, Herbert, Colin, Mary Eliza and Elizabeth. Herbert brought with him his wife, Charlotte Jones and five children, and Elizabeth brought her son, Joseph Harvey. They were living in East Liverpool by the time of the 1880 census Colin later returned to England, but the others stayed in America and now have many descendants in East Liverpool and elsewhere. Herbert and Charlotte are the great great grandparents of Cathy Platt (nee Catherine Bloor) and Allan Edgar Bloor. Families of all the surviving children of Joseph Bloor and Harriet Shuffelbotham are:

• Herbert married Charlotte Jones in England before emigrating with five children. He died in East Liverpool in 1938. • Mary Eliza married Herbert Robotham 25 October 1881 in East Liverpool. She died in East Liverpool in 1930 • James married Annie Dennis in East Liverpool in 1886. Their children were James, Helena Inez, Alice, Elizabeth and Colin. James died in East Liverpool in 1915. • Elizabeth married William Harvey in Stoke in 1879 and they had a son Joseph Bloor Harvey born 1880. Elizabeth brought her son to America without William before the 1880 census. She died in 1890. • Colin lived in after he returned to England (sailing from New York to Liverpool in 1892). He is found in the 1901 census married to Zion. From Parish Register (FMP), Colin Arthur Bloor (occupation potter, father Joseph) married Zion Wilkes at Cobridge, Christ Church, 1 September 1895. A 1913 letter from Mary Robotham (Colin’s sister Mary Eliza visiting from America) gives 21 Chapel Lane, Burslem as address. Colin and Zion are at Chapel Lane in 1911, no children. Colin Bloor sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1908. Zion Bloor died in 1915 and Colin married Lizzie Woodhouse in 1917. Colin Arthur Bloor of 21 Chapel Lane Burslem died 2 July 1925 probate to Lizzie Bloor, widow. {Another Colin Bloor was the son of James Bloor and Annie Dennis, therefore the nephew of Colin who returned to England; he died in East Liverpool in 1958]

16 Have not found record of immigration in 1879. James Bloor age 25 arrived in New York 10 Sept 1883 on the Berlin from Liverpool [Ancestry} https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 9 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020©

Harriett Shuffelbotham's birth date in June 1828 and parents, Joseph Shuffelbotham and Ellen Wareham, are known from the family bible obtained from Margaret Schneider. The IGI shows 2 christenings: June 13, 1830 - Wesleyan, Fenton; and December 30, 1832 - Lane End, Stafford (Staffs). The latter date is the same christening as George Warshaw Shuffelbotham, whom I assume to be her brother. From the IGI, Joseph Shuffelbottom married Ellin Waram in Norton-in-the-Moors, Staffordshire in 1814. As many as 11 total children may be inferred from the IGI in Hanley, Stoke, and Bucknall-cum-Bagnall back to 1806. I have not been able to find this Shuffelbotham family in the census in Fenton/Longton.

https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 10 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020© Bloors in East Liverpool, Ohio As described above, James Bloor emigrated to East Liverpool, Ohio in 1879 and one year later he was joined by his mother (Harriett) and his brothers and sisters, Herbert, Colin, Mary Eliza and Elizabeth. Herbert’s story was told in 1932 in an article in the East Liverpool Review sent to me by Mrs. Dolores Wheatley David. Herbert began work at the Copestick Brothers at the age of 8. He worked for 5 years as a figure maker, and then began his apprenticeship as a . At age 19 he was elected secretary of the Longton Turners, Throwers and Handlers Trade Union and at 20 he married Charlotte Jones. He arrived in New York on January 16, 1881.

Esther (Bloor) Shone’s son, Alfred, also emigrated to East Liverpool in 1880. He sailed from Liverpool one day after he married Esther Jones and joined his cousin, James Bloor. Esther (Jones) Shone joined Alfred in East Liverpool one year later, traveling alone via New York and Pittsburgh. They had eight children and have descendants in East Liverpool and elsewhere in the US. The Shone and Bloor family histories in East Liverpool have been collected by Esther (Thompson) Jones, Esther Bloor’s great granddaughter and my (Peter Kelsall’s) second cousin once removed.

Cathy Platt has contributed a complete tree that connects to the present day as follows:

Enoch-Elizabeth/Joseph-Harriett Herbert-Charlotte Arthur Richard-Edna Mae Robert J-Mary Carl Edward-Carol Jean Cathleen Marie Bloor.

Cathy Platt (nee Bloor) is Peter Kelsall’s 4th cousin once removed.

https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 11 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020© DNA Study The Bloor Society is coordinating a Y-DNA study to attempt to connect various Bloor “trees”. Only male Bloors can contribute samples for comparison. Cathy Platt’s father, Carl Edward submitted a sample one week before his death. This may enable us to connect the Enoch-Elizabeth Pool tree to others.

I am also tracking autosomal DNA matches on Ancestry, My Heritage, 23 and Me and FTDNA. As of March 2020, I have matches (both on Ancestry) where Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool are the common ancestors: Kenneth Poole (4th cousin) – descends from Enoch Bloor and Eliza Birchall Arthur Bloor (4th cousin once removed) – descends from Joseph Bloor and Harriet Shuffelbotham Jonathon Watkins – descends from Mary Ann Bloor b 1855 Fenton – could be daughter of Edwin In addition, James Bloor and Cathy Platt match with Arthur Bloor but not with me.

I have more matches where Samuel Shone and Esther Bloor are the common ancestors.

https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Families_Peter/Bloor/Bloor 12 history/Bloor_History.docx Created by Peter Kelsall, 2020© Unresolved Connections Alfred and James followed many Staffordshire potters to East Liverpool. William H. Bloor was “a native of Joiner’s Square 17 where he was born on March 16, 1821. He came to the United States in 1842 after learning the pottery trade in England. He came to East Liverpool a little later and became associated with William Brunt”18,19,20. Bloor was involved in the California Gold Rush and later with pottery enterprises in both East Liverpool and Trenton. William Bloor died May 26, 1877 and is buried at Riverview Cemetery, East Liverpool21. From information provided by Terri Stern, William Bloor married Elizabeth Brunt22, had children Willim H, Saforia, Edwin, Emilene and Herbert L. and lived in East Liverpool and Trenton NJ.

As explained below, it is possible to speculate on the relationship between William H. Bloor and our known Bloor ancestors. From above, William H. Bloor was born in March 1821 and it is reasonable to link him to the William christened in Hanley, May 27, 1821 to parents William Bloore and Mary23. This family is found in Stoke in the 1841 census with son, William age 18 and father William age 4024. The father, William could be the William Bloor christened August 29, 1795 to Joseph Bloor and Mary and therefore could be the brother of the Enoch Bloor who married Elizabeth Pool (see page 3). If this connection is correct, William H. Bloor was the great uncle of James and Edward William Bloor who both emigrated to America in 1880/188125.

Another Bloor line reported by Mrs. Elizabeth Bloor Hist of East Liverpool may also trace to Enoch and Elizabeth. William O. Bloor was brought to East Liverpool as an infant. His father was Carl and his grandfather Enoch. However, I have found no link between Carl and Enoch and Elizabeth. I have not found a Carl Bloor anywhere in the 1841 to 1871 censuses (in Fenton or Longton), nor in the 1881 census (anywhere in Staffordshire), nor in the IGI.

17 Joiner’s Square is located about 2km north of the center of Fenton on the southeast side of Hanley 18 The Bulletin of the American Ceramic Society, January 1937, provided by W. Spencer Bloor 19 Mar 16 birthdate also given on a passport application dated 4 April, 1872 (Ancestry). 20 Another Bloor/Brunt connection is James Edward Bloor married Anne Brunt 1 Jun 1819 in Trentham, Staffs. This may be the James Bloor christened 11 Oct 1789 to James Bloor and Sarah. James Edward and Anne are ancestors of Heather French. 21 Findagrave.com. Headstone gives birthdate as Mar 15, 1821 22 From Staffordshire BMD. William Bloor married Elizabeth Brunt Bucknall St. Mary, Stoke, 1842.
